Had this sitting in my library for ages and finally played it. Pretty fun overall, but kinda hard if you're new to RTS games. It's also mentally draining, so I needed a break after some chapters. Mostly played campaign and Skirmish, didn't touch multiplayer. Some achievements are easy, others feel almost impossible, but finally getting the hard ones is really satisfying.
An Underrated RTS Gem for History Lovers As a history enthusiast, Ancestors Legacy was a real highlight for me from the first mission to the last. What stood out immediately was how the game lets you experience different campaigns from multiple perspectives. Whether Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Germans of the Holy Roman Empire, Slavs, or even Saladin each faction brings its own story, atmosphere, and interesting characters. It doesn’t just feel like a standard RTS; instead, it genuinely gives you the impression of stepping into historical conflicts and events. Of course, the game takes some creative liberties, but that blend of history and entertainment is exactly what makes it so engaging. At first glance, the core gameplay seems fairly simple: gather resources, build a base, capture villages, and ultimately destroy the enemy stronghold. However, despite this straightforward structure, every single campaign mission feels unique. Different objectives, varied maps, and changing tactical situations ensure that nothing ever feels repetitive – for me, the game was essentially 0% repetitive. What I also really enjoyed is the strong focus on tactical combat. It’s not enough to simply outnumber your opponent. Positioning, terrain, ambushes, and proper use of unit types all matter significantly. This keeps every battle engaging and rewarding from start to finish. On top of that, the presentation is very strong. The medieval atmosphere is well captured, the environments are detailed and immersive, and the sound design fits perfectly. Combined with the campaign structure and storytelling, it creates a very cohesive and enjoyable experience that kept me hooked for hours. If you’re into medieval history, immersive atmosphere, and tactical real-time strategy, Ancestors Legacy is absolutely worth playing. It left a strong impression on me and is, in my opinion, an underrated gem in the RTS genre.
At the end of the day, it's a basic RTS. For 22 zł (around 6 USD), I squeezed out 33 hours of playtime, which is a solid price-to-time spent ratio. It's just extremely unpolished, but nonetheless if you're a fan of the genre, I can recommend buying it on a sale. To elaborate, the fundamentals of the gameplay are solid. The campaigns are enjoyable as well, there's a lot of content and the each mission feels different. I also appreciate focusing on less known events and characters, like the Great Prussian Uprising. Unfortunately, there's also a lot to complain about. I've met with a pathfinding bug in 2/3 of the maps, where my units just run towards a river and stand there on its shore rather than get to where I wanted them to. There's no real way to disengage from a fight, other than making your units flee. But doing so makes them run in a straight line to your base, regardless of the dangers, which makes using cavalry charges extremely clunky. Finally, you often spawn with some unique high tier units when starting a new map. Which you can't replenish in your main base, since "you don't have the appropriate building". But you can run to just any village centre and replenish the unit over there. Like, what? I dunno, I just feel like the game didn't get enough post-launch polish to truly shine, despite the good base, it's not given enough love to be flawless, so here it is, a basic RTS with a lot of content, dragged down because of the lack of many quality of life features. I still recommend the game, I enjoyed these 33 hours, but it's a shame to see that this game could have been even better if given more attention.
