I'm actually impressed by this game, I was honestly expecting it to be a very bland survivors clone with a Windows XP skin. It really feels like one of those games that gets overwhelmingly positive reviews purely because it reminds people of their childhoods and has a lot of memes or references in it. The theming is very well done (more well done than I was expecting honestly) but the gameplay is also decently unique. I bought this because it looked well made despite it maybe just being "unc slop" as it describes itself in one of the bundles, and it definitely succeeds in that department. AVS2003 is a lot more focused on solving the "movement problem" of survivors games by making mini points of interest you need to go around and collect on each map. Standing still is still a viable strategy, but only with specific builds and at very specific times- it's a lot better to sprint around the map discovering things and rushing headlong into danger. You have to "double click" each POI which sounds easy but can be hard to do in the thick of things, but you can also "drag click" them to drag them to a new position, much like moving desktop icons. This makes files that take long to open like ZIP files or buff files like Frenzy fun to use because you can "walk with them" while moving around and post up somewhere while they unpack. The game also has five levels, and you absolutely need to get to the ending of each level before the time runs out, so you really can't just sit and afk for 15 minutes once you get your build going. I think these are decently good solutions to a problem where these types of games become uninteractive past a certain point. The music and general aesthetic is great, and I definitely think it pulled off what it was trying to accomplish well! It's not perfect, but the issues I have are mostly minor issues that could be rectified in balance patches or updates if the devs choose to do so. I don't find any of the weapons i've unlocked that unique, but some of that could be locked away in the upgrade trees they have. As much as I love Old School Runescape, the dscim is functionally nearly identical to the cut scissors, which is similar to the VLC cone, which is sort of like the Output Device and Quarantine. These all have upgrades that make them slightly more unique, but generally there's "melee weapons in a small AOE" and "ranged weapons that bounce or get sent out to an enemy" and thats basically as complex as it gets. You could say that all of these games are like that and there isn't much room for variety in the design space, but I would argue even Vampire Survivors itself had more weapon variety in how the weapons worked (if you ignore the recolours that are usually meant to be fusion weapons). I like the fact that the Garlic weapon in this game is destructible though and needs to be replenished, that's a nice twist. Also some things might need rebalancing, but I've only beaten this game on difficulty 1 and 3 so maybe at the highest difficulties it evens out. There's a perk that allows you to get XP when you take damage, this is very easy to spoof and get insane levels very quickly by either sitting still in one of the games "walls", or getting hit by enemies that inflict poison/burn or deal low damage. I like this strategy a lot as its unique, but it feels way too strong... although if you do that in level 5 maybe you just get slapped across the face. Also a lot of the "challenge modes" really don't feel like that much extra challenge for how much extra reward you get, but all it does is give you more metacurrency so its really not that big of an issue. Yeah, this is a pretty good survivors game. It mixes things up enough to feel worth the purchase, even if the weapons aren't super creative. These games are generally pretty cheap and AVS2003 really feels like it has a lot of effort put into it, so I say its worth the purchase for sure. If you're like me and just need to stare at something dealing damage and getting numbers on the screen every few months, then this won't disappoint and might surprise you.

"... filled with nods to the days when computers were actually fun." This game makes me want to cry. This excerpt from the store description isn't just a playful jab, it's the truth, though I imagine it weighs heavier on me than most. The days when I looked forward to meeting new people online, adding people I played TF2 and Gmod with almost willy-nilly, still forming relationships by sheer quantity. Hopping onto whatever game, whenever, without having to plan a month in advance for a fleeting afternoon. Not treating the death of my computer like the death of a family member because it doesn't cost me a year's salary to replace just one or two parts. Living in the moment while still being able to imagine the future. ♥♥♥♥ man, I just don't have it in me anymore. I've already reached the twilight. It's a shame that a game this fun has to hit so close to home, but thank you for its authenticity. It's better to be clean than to be comfortable. edit for dev: <3

This reminded me of the time I was 10 and downloaded a hitmarker mouse cursor, unknowingly infecting my computer. Safe to say it was worth it. However, I will not make the same mistake in allowing my children to have unsupervised computer access. The death screen genuinely made me think something was wrong. The Matrix style music makes me nervous. I currently have dreams about blue and green cubes floating around. Might need to download vapor.exe to clear my brain. 10/10 for some reason this game scratches my old lady brain the right way. Candy crush has been retired.

This is actually a very solid "survivors" game. One of the best, maybe The best since the original. Don't get fooled by the aesthetic, it's not just uncbait nostalgiaslop even though a lot of the other reviews lean on talking about that. If you are under age 30 and don't recognize any of the little icons and jokes, it doesn't matter. It's a good game and you should go for it, well worth it.

God-tier impulse buy. Incredible nostalgia bait, especially if you were an OG chronically online nerd. And the dev clearly knows how to make a game immersive and fun (and a little too addicting, oops) It's a roguelike bullet heaven / hell, with references to older software and the early web literally everywhere. The environment, sound, visuals do so much for immersion. Any time you have 30-60 minutes you can just drop in for a session. The upgrade modules are baked into the environment. You learn by doing in the game, you aren't punished for not knowing how something works, but get rewarded when you figure it out. Oh, and it worked for me on Linux (Ubuntu) with zero extra steps, and no lag or weird behavior. If you're unsure, download the demo, that's what sold it for me. No notes at all. I rarely leave game reviews, so you know this was serious. I really can't wait to see how this game evolves!! Kudos to the developers and artists
