It's Balatro if it were Mah Jong. And for those not in know, Balatro is Slay the Spire but Poker. And for those not in the know, Slay the Spire ... has a new game releasing soon, I'd also recommend that one.

At first I wasn't sure how to feel, especially with the needing a pair every time I play a section of the classic hand type, but you learn to live with it. The game has a surprising amount going for it, especially since Mahjong isn't exactly the most well-known game in the West. One of the few times in my life I'm glad I know how to play Mahjong, despite the fact that Mahjong causes great damage to the human spirit without a single benefit.

In 4-player mahjong, you can expect to lose 75% of the time. Aotenjo fixes this by letting you lose 100% of the time

Last year Balatro took the rogue-like deckbuilder genre by storm. The poker theme made the game super approachable, and the joker twist and made for an addicting gameplay loop. Aotenjo: Infinite Hands looks to replicate and add to this formula, but this time replacing the Poker base with Mahjongg. Each turn in Aotenjo is simple. Make a set of either three ascending tiles of the same suit or a triplet of three identical tiles, plus a pair to score. To make one hand, you'll need to take four turns. Every turn you'll score the entire value of the set and pair you played, plus all previous sets you have played. Each turn scores flat points (Fu) based on the tiles played, multiplied by another number (Fan). Sometimes these sets are hard to make, and to assist in achieving a set you can modify your tiles with gadgets that can directly change the tiles you have. The harder the set is to achieve, the higher the base score and multipliers are. These base points and multipliers can be upgraded over the course of the run through books, or directly modified via artifacts. At the end of four turns you'll have a hand of tiles consisting of four sets and the pair from your final turn, making one full Mahjongg hand. In short: Aotenjo Balatro Fu Base Points (Blue) Fan Multiplier (Red) Artifacts Jokers Books Planets Gadgets ~Tarot Yaku / Patterns Poker Hands If you've played Balatro but never played Mahjongg, this game might have a tougher barrier of entry. Poker has 10 hands by default, with 3 additional hands in Balatro. In Aotenjo there are 103 total Yaku/Patterns. Don't let this dissuade you from trying though. You can get by without knowing most of them and stumble into them as you play. Heck, even if you've played Mahjongg before most of these hands are unique to this game due to the crazy combos you can make. I think that Aotenjo will end up as a niche, but beloved game in the rogue-lite deckbuilding genre. The increased complexity over its poker-themed counterpart might make some players bounce off quickly, but for those that stick around there's a hell of a game underneath. For only $10, it's a steal for the value you could potentially get out of this game.

Absolutely love it! As a mahjong enthusiast who primarily plays in FFXIV and MajSoul, and also a huge fan of Balatro, this game is not only what I expected and wanted it to be, but is so much more. That said, it's not "just" Balatro but Mahjong. It does change up the feel quite a bit, of course. But between there being so many yaku and hand types, as well as consumable items to pull some clutch plays, there's a ton of strategy in building your wall and planning for specific hands. You can feel the influence, yes, but I think Aotenjo does a fantastic job finding it's own identity, instead of just being Balatro but Riichi There's a lot to love for both mahjong beginners and experts alike!
