One of the top VR games of the year. Not that its that hard to accomplish considering the state of VR gaming. Its polish, good enough graphics, good enough mechanics, great tutorial and good enough combat. Lets be honest, if you regularly buy VR games, you can't be that picky. So despite some of its quirks this is a must addition for any decent VR library.

I’ll be honest, this game bounced off me the first time giving it a go. The tutorial is a bit of a chore, and it starts slow even after that. I didn’t click with the combat right away and just didn’t flow. I dropped it but always wanting to give it another go. I have to say I am glad I did, it’s probably made my top 10 list all time VR games. It’s just fun. A game like Alyx is a technical marvel, but I can’t say I had half the fun playing thru that game as this one right here. And I don’t mean “fun” in the “they have a great personality,” you can overlook some other stuff. Legitimately, it’s one of the most polished almost AAA games in VR you’ll play. You’ll want to bring it home to meet the mom. Graphics are really phenomenal, and level design gives it a bit of a metrovania feel. I would imagine I am about 3/4 of the way thru at 10 hours, so I think you’re getting your monies worth. I think it’s a must have honestly. If I had to give a rating, I’d probably be at about a 9/10.

This game was fun but I have a feeling not a lot of people actually finished it. First I’ll talk about the good stuff. I liked the environment. It’s very pretty and colorful. The devs put a lot of detail into how you add upgrades to your weapons, buy stuff, get health stims, etc. It gave me HLAlyx vibes in this department. I also liked the climbing mechanic (mostly). The combat was fun but I will admit it got a little repetitive. It wasn’t what I was expecting but that’s probably on me. Each area had stuff to collect. Items to sell, healing items, hidden weapon upgrades, and lore. I liked hunting for all the lore items in each zone. Every area has a “lore master” to find and when you do, you can use the map like a compass to find all the remaining lore collectables you haven’t found yet. My first impressions of this game were very good. When I was introduced to the world, how to play, and how to upgrade stuff I was pumped to get back into it. My second time playing I started to notice some stuff and was mildly let down. My third and additional times playing I kind of came to terms with my previously heightened expectations and accepted the game for how it was. Remember earlier when I said I got HLAlyx vibes? Well that’s true but it heightened my expectations for what the rest of the game would be like. I was mildly let down because as beautiful as the environments are, every new area I went to felt very similar. Even at the end of the game where due to some story elements you would expect things to look a lot different. For the combat I went in expecting some fun melee style parrying/blocking hack and slash fun. Again at the beginning the very first weapon you get is a sword so I was super pumped. Then the game gives you a gun, and then another bigger gun. I tried using the sword mostly but it felt a little clunky. I did just come from playing Blade and Sorcery and the combat definitely wasn’t as good as that. I ended up using the 2 guns and a shield 90% of my play time. The game gives you some grenades and mines to use as well but The game doesn’t introduce those to you the same way it does the main weapons and shield so I didn’t realize I had some of these until later. I barely used them. The story was kind of interesting but even after reading all the lore entries it wasn’t super clear who I was and what my place in this world was. I had a general idea of why I was doing the things I was doing but I couldn’t give any deep details about it. Sometimes it was a little unclear where to go to accomplish certain side tasks. Some things would sometimes be on your map and you could track them but not everything. Overall I do recommend this game. I think the full price is a little steep for this title but if it looks like something you enjoy, then go for it. It’s clear the folks that worked on this game put in a lot of thought on the details, mechanics, and polish. Would definitely grab it if it’s ever on sale though!

I wasn't expecting much when I bought this game. It had been sitting in my Steam library for a while when I picked it up... and holy c... 5 hours straight in just my first play session (my back is killing me! I'm old... hehehe). The game's climbing and exploration mechanics got me from the beginning. Movement feels natural and intuitive (underwater movement feels real enough... I mean, I know you can use the stick to move but you can also move your arms as if you where actually swimming, which is better for the exercise and immersion). Combat is really unforgiving (I started playing in normal difficulty). Did I mention the game is really immersive? The game looks really good (and I'm still using an RTX 2070 GPU with a Quest 3 over Steam Link). Sound is nice and adds to the immersion. I don't usually post game reviews (this could very well be my first one, I don't remember)... but man, I was so impressed and happy with my time playing this game, that I had to say something about it!

Great VR game, but naturally has some issues. I have 100%'d this game, and it was a very enjoyable time. But there are some changes that can be made to improve it. For further context, i completed the game on hard difficulty (heroic). Let's start with grenades. In this game, you'll often try to fight enemies one on one. Grabbing a grenade is pressing a button to open the inventory, grabbing the grenade, pressing the trigger to prime it and then throwing it. Usually, grenades are meant to deal with groups, which doesn't happen often in Arken Age. These two reasons made me not use grenades, at all. They don't even do much on the higher difficulty, other than knocking an enemy down for a moment. Then the shields. It's also cumbersome to grab a shield, after having to open the menu. There is also no way of seeing how much durability a shield has left, having it slowly discolor to red as it breaks would be a nice indicator. Shields are also... pretty small. I might aswell use my gun to block the bullets, as that works just as fine. About difficulties in general: save yourself the pain, do not play on Heroic. The devs didn't put much thought into difficulty, and just raised enemy health and damage. There are other minor changes such as the costs of making a health syringe, but raised enemy health and damage makes it less fun. Theres more! The game has a terminal in the Gildewood Kingdom, where you can spawn waves of enemies called Squadrons. Beating a squadron puts your time on the highscore board. As of writing, 52 people have beaten squadron 13. I'm number one by a large time margin, and the fact that i am is a problem. Because this is what i did: i'm used to the game being punishing, so just for that wave i went to easy difficulty, then did the wave again. The highscore board is NOT seperated by difficulty. Anyone playing on the easiest difficulty has a massive advantage in terms of time. Minor suggestion: Have guns make a noise when the battery is empty. Using the bioreaper i had to keep pressing the trigger everytime until i notice it wasn't firing. Don't bother with New Game+ either, there are no significant changes that make playing the game again worth it. This is where enemy health&damage should be increased, but that doesn't happen. Sometimes grabbing items using the flick wrist motion doesn't seem to work, i have to move my hand so it nearly precisely aligns with the item. Mostly talking about the healing fruit from trees. One last thing, sprinting is weird. Sometimes i'm full speed when walking diagonally, sometimes i full speed in all directions. Walking is also pretty slow, may i suggest an always sprinting option? Devs, if you're reading this, enemies should have the same amount of health and deal the same amount of damage across all difficulties, but make them dumber and slower on easier difficulties and smarter and faster on higher difficulties. Guns just don't feel very impactfull on higher difficulties. Despite all this, the game is still pretty fun, and a great adventure. EDIT: Ignore sprinting issue, my controller has a stick problem.
