A gorgeous game, but definitely wait for a deep sale. Hubris is a bit of a mixed bag. It completely nails the visuals and movement, but the combat and VR mechanics are pretty clunky. I had a good time with it overall, but honestly, don't pay full price for this. Grab it on a discount like I did. Starting with the good stuff: the game looks absolutely stunning. The lighting and environments are top-notch, and I was stoked that I could run it smoothly on max settings. The story is completely forgettable, but let's be real, that's clearly not the main focus here anyway. Where the game really shines is how you move around. I absolutely loved the climbing. The light blue highlights on the ledges are a great touch and make it feel super intuitive, even if it gets a little janky sometimes and your hand snaps to the wrong spot. Swimming feels great too, though I wasn't a huge fan of the Torpedo gun compared to the regular lasers. Also, contrary to what some other reviews say, I actually really liked the hoverbike section! It was easy to steer, and I honestly finished that part wishing there was more of it. Sadly, the combat is a big letdown. The gunplay just feels weak, there's zero "oomph" when you shoot. The enemy AI is super basic and easy to wipe out, even on the hardest difficulty. The "heavy soldiers" are especially broken; you can just half-hide behind a pillar and they won't even shoot back, they just slowly walk at you and tank hits. The reloading is way too dumbed down. You get infinite ammo, and reloading is literally just pushing a cartridge in. It's so fast that it completely kills the difficulty. I found myself just standing out in the open, not even bothering with cover. The two-handed aiming is incredibly annoying as well. Why can't I just use the dedicated grip button? Instead, the game makes you physically move your controllers close together to trigger it. It was super buggy for me on SteamVR (though it worked better on OpenXR via Virtual Desktop): sometimes my left hand would grab the gun, and sometimes it just wouldn't. The weapon upgrades are kinda lame. Your starting pistol eventually turns into a shotgun and a machine gun, but levelling them up just boosts damage and ammo. There's no real excitement to upgrading since the guns look very similar. Plus, once you unlock the machine gun, you'll never touch the pistol or shotgun again because it just shreds everything in seconds. Outside of combat, the inventory UI is pretty frustrating. My hand kept accidentally brushing against other menus when I just wanted to pull out an item. It gets incredibly annoying when you're trying to unload a bunch of crafting materials into the extractor. I really don't get why there isn't a way to just grab a handful of items at once. Quick heads-up for Quest/Virtual Desktop players: Make sure not to use VDXR when playing this! If you do, Steam won't track your hours and your achievements will won't be tracked. I missed out on the first half of my achievements because of this and lost about 2 hours of playtime.

Hubris is kind of like comfort food. It's something you can do when your standards aren't too high but you're not really in the mood to deal with anything serious. It's a really relaxed game with no real difficulty and you pretty much just go through a linear path of beautiful areas with a minimal enemies and puzzle solving elements. I actually think it could be a really good game if they had really cranked up the combat and reduced some of the still-present. You might like it if you're trying to do pretty much the opposite of a rogue-like and are in the mood for a beer or something.

OK, so this obviously isn't on par with Alyx (but not much is!) but I have to recommend the game as it's a fun experience and gorgeous looking once you dial in the settings and use OpenXR. I found VDXR with no AA the best looking. I'll start with the negatives. The 'story' is non existent and you don't really know what you are doing or why but once you are into the game, it doesn't matter as you take it for what it is. The NPC's are strange. Drones are simple enough to deal with but the first time you find the human enemies, they never miss a shot! So just run around and keep shooting and they go down easy. Also the guns are a bit meh and the "shotgun" is pointless. Once you get the auto weapon, just stick with it. Keep collecting all the scraps you can and upgrading is easy. There are some great moments though (hoverbike!) and the mechanics are fantastic in my opinion, especially the swimming. This to me what makes a VR title worth playing. Good mechanics. The game took me around 7 hours and that was me literally searching everywhere for scraps and way over doing the food and potions for the final battle. I think I had about 40 drinks and food left over! I will also say, the ending is just random. No explanation and it turns out Lucia is a b*tch if you watch the end credits. She was pretty annoying throughout anyway. Overall despite it's flaws, it is a solid fun experience and I'll probably play it again one day on a harder setting. I don't suppose I'll understand it any further if i do play it again but I know I'll have a good time!

Okay so I’m going to thumbs up this one but I want to be clear that I only recommend this game if most or all the following is true: You’re somewhat new to VR and you’re still getting a solid feel for what kind of fun stuff is out there OR looking for top of the line visuals (see note about computer below). You didn’t just finish HL Alyx and are looking for something close to it. You have a pretty beefy computer (I have a 4090 for context). It’s on sale (I picked it up for about 10 bucks). You don’t care about story at all. You’re okay playing on the easiest setting because it gets unnecessarily difficult towards the end. Here’s what I liked the most: The graphics. Wow. One of the best looking games I’ve seen graphically since HL Alyx IF your rig can handle it. The environments looked very very good in my bigscreen beyond 2. I also liked the EARLY combat. See more about what I didn’t like combat wise below. I also liked the refining and crafting potions despite its simplicity. The attention to detail was pretty cool. One last thing I liked is that it’s short. That’s a good thing because the combat at the end got annoyingly intense. I was more relieved that the game ended after it and didn’t overstay its welcome. More of a neutral comment here but there is a small variety of guns to use and upgrade. I say neutral because I don’t think more guns was necessary and I also felt that just upgrading the pistol was enough for me to complete the game. The other 2 weapons didn’t seem better, just different. I enjoyed the little amount of exploration that was involved. Climbing around felt okay and finding pick ups to use at the refiner was satisfying. The visuals though again. Top tier especially when you swim underwater. It really feels like a majority of the effort put into this game revolves around that and you can really feel it. Idk if that’s a good or bad thing though. Now the dislikes: The story. Idk who I am or why I’m doing what I’m doing other than because some general on a screen said “do this thing!”. Also the person talking to me kept telling me to do things. I feel pretty confident that I won’t spoil the story by telling you everything I know about it lol. You emergency land on this planet that has a big terraformer on it for some reason and you spend most of the game working to get that terraforming thing working so it can lift a big rock to blow up some big enemy ship. When you accomplish this the game’s credits roll. I also didn’t care for the characters or their dialogue. There’s 2.5 characters other than yourself and they all have the personality of a graham cracker (the plain kind not the kind with cinnamon). Sometimes their dialogue (unskippable) went on too long. It wasn’t always clear what do to next or where to go. I eventually figured it out but a reminder or some kind of HUD telling the player the objective or where to go next would be helpful. Okay now why I didn’t like the combat. The combat starts off light and a welcome addition. There’s some under water and above ground mixed in. For some reason the second half of the game the devs decide to throw everything but the kitchen sink at you. Like endless waves (seems like anyway) of enemies spawning like magic in areas you know you’ve cleared out already. The very last level was just an absurd amount of bad guys spawning from all over and coming from different angles. There was one point where I was just chugging health potions while shooting enemies over and over lol. I was playing on the normal mode and stuff doesn’t kill you too fast. It just seemed like a little much. Instead of challenging in a fun way it came off as annoying. Maybe on the easier setting it would have felt more satisfying to mow down waves of enemies? Who knows? Finally the last thing I didn’t like was I decided the check out the Arena Mode after I finished the story. So, remember that annoying combat I just explained? How would you like to enter a maze-like area just like that BUT you start without a gun! And you need to run around like a trapped mouse looking for items that spawn to help you stay alive while you run from check point to check point. A checkpoint is just an area where you can’t leave for 15 seconds while enemies shoot at you and you just have to hide behind boxes to not get hit. Yeah, sorry this wasn’t what I would call a fun experience lol. I feel like if the combat was a little more engaging and there were a handful of weapons to try (that you could spawn with) then it might be more enticing. But nah hard pass. TLDR: If you just want to see some amazing visuals and your computer can handle it, pick this one up on sale. The visuals/environments get an A+ from me. Everything else is a

Graphics are top notch, I was like wow, through out the whole game. Almost as good as Alyx. Combat was nice and I died a lot so it was challenging. Climbing was fun too as well as the swimming. I finished it so it kept my interest all the way to the end.
