Well, I just finished this game, and I'm still actively crying... Maybe I should wait to write this til I've stopped, but I can't. I got this game because dementia care is close to my heart. My last job was in a Memory Care and Assisted Living facility and oh my goodness those residents had my whole heart. Still do, the ones that are still with us. This game is.. so so like how I observed their day to day to be. Falling into memories, getting lost, coming out again, losing time, sundowning... As far as the game itself, it just about shows the accuracy of typical dementia better than the Dementia Live demonstration I did for work. That covered the impaired hearing and vision, but this covered the disorientation so, heartbreakingly well. Something Dementia Live couldn't achieve. Wandering around the apartment, looking left, looking right, looking left again and seeing something different. Looking down, then back up to suddenly be in a different room... it really unnerved me -- as it should. The strain it puts on the family caregiver is so accurate too. And even more so the divide between the sibling that experiences every day vs the one who is distant and only sees the good days. I knew those families. I saw dozens of different faces on these characters. What a raw, and beautiful, and sad depiction of what is a very cruel disease. If you have ever known someone who lived with a form of dementia and wondered what they went through, this might be the best way to understand short of experiencing it yourself. Obviously it doesn't show all possible symptoms, the ones in this game are the less spicy variety, but still gives one a pretty good idea. I finished it in about an hour and a half and it was well worth the tears.
As a nurse working closely with patients who have Alzheimer's and other dementias, the experience from this game felt emotionally honest, respectful and painfully real. A beautifully crafted game with the affirmation of why I care for the people I do, and why their stories matter. A thumbs up from me.
