July 2025
Astral Ascent is a beautifully crafted roguelite that mixes fast-paced action with deep customization and striking pixel art to deliver a satisfying and stylish experience. Set in a magical prison called the Garden, the game follows one of four protagonists—each with their own combat style and story—as they attempt to escape by battling powerful celestial guardians known as the Zodiacs. With every run, the narrative unfolds a little more, revealing layers of mystery and emotion behind the characters and the world they inhabit. The core of the game is its fluid and skill-based combat. Players juggle basic attacks with mana-fueled spells that rotate through a customizable queue, creating a flow that is both rhythmic and tactical. The spell system is where Astral Ascent truly shines. Each spell can be modified using Gambits that alter its properties and effects, and combining these strategically can lead to devastating synergies. The combat feels responsive and flashy, rewarding players who experiment with builds and adapt to the unique enemies and challenges of each run. Progression unfolds across a series of procedurally generated rooms, offering a mix of combat arenas, exploration zones, shops, and special events. The path you take influences the resources you gather, the types of enemies you face, and how well-prepared you’ll be for the Zodiac boss fight at the end of each area. These bosses are a highlight of the game—beautifully animated, challenging, and distinct in their mechanics. Mastering their patterns becomes a rewarding dance of timing and reflex. Between runs, players return to the Garden, which acts as a central hub for unlocking new abilities, spells, and narrative content. Resources earned during gameplay feed into permanent upgrades, ensuring that even failed attempts contribute to overall progression. The Garden is also where character interactions unfold, gradually deepening your connection to the protagonists and hinting at the wider lore of the universe. The storytelling is delivered in a thoughtful and measured way, not overwhelming the action, but giving it context and heart. Visually, Astral Ascent is nothing short of stunning. The pixel art is crisp and expressive, bringing both the environments and characters to life with vibrant detail and fluid animation. The game’s color palette and visual effects help maintain clarity during chaotic battles, and the Zodiac designs in particular stand out as artistic showpieces. Accompanying the visuals is a sweeping soundtrack that ranges from quiet and contemplative to tense and dramatic, enhancing the mood of each encounter. Despite all its strengths, the game has a few rough edges. The learning curve can be steep, especially for new players unfamiliar with its spellcrafting systems. Early runs might feel punishing, and the flood of customization options can overwhelm. Some of the room designs and biomes start to feel repetitive over time, and the basic attack mechanics occasionally lack the weight and impact seen in other roguelikes. The interface, especially when managing spell queues, can also be a little clunky under pressure. Even with these minor flaws, Astral Ascent stands out as a thoughtful and polished entry into the roguelite genre. It successfully combines the thrill of action combat with meaningful player choice and progression, all wrapped in an eye-catching artistic package. For those who enjoy the structure of games like Hades or Dead Cells but want a fresh setting and a more strategic take on ability customization, this game is absolutely worth your time. Its blend of aesthetic charm and mechanical depth ensures that each run offers both challenge and discovery. Rating: 9/10

This is a fantastic game - a gift that keeps on giving throughout my 30 hours with it so far. To be honest I was fairly underwhelmed when I first started it. Cartoonish character, trivial platforming, one-button combat mechanics, fairly standard progression for a rogue-lite... But what sets this game apart is that it quickly starts introducing new stuff and never stops - spells, auras, enchantments, rewarding challenges, global run modifiers, meta-progression, upgrades, new characters, new aspects for weapons, then another whole new layer of meta-progression, then turns out characters can equip multiple weapons and switch between them in combat, you get summons, actually difficult (and optional) platforming challenges, skill-based mini-games, well-written story, interesting bosses (who fight you despite secretly sympathising you), new dialogues every time you complete a run, and apparently there is still more stuff to unlock, as I often pass an ominous portal that seem to do nothing for now :) Also I want to call out two things this game does great. First - is how much thought and agency you have when making your build - it is never just a random set of buffs you happened to pick up. There are even special rooms that allow you to synthesise THE EXACT thing you need for your build. The second one is how the game ramps up difficulty so far. Instead of common beefing up enemies and increasing damage, it gives enemies new moves, introduces unique challengers mid-run, opens secret mini-boss chambers for an extra risk/reward - I can't believe how fresh it still feels after all my time with it.

This was my first roguelite, and I had a blast with it. The combat is fast-paced, fluid, and flashy— super satisfying. I also love the variety of builds you can create with all the different elements in the game. Even after 20+ hours, every run still felt fresh. The pixel art is fantastic, and I love the character cutscenes. Definitely some Dragon Ball vibes there. Great voice acting too— really enjoyed their performances. I also love how you can gradually uncover more lore and character relationships across multiple runs. That said, the story itself didn’t feel compelling enough for me to keep going just to see every piece of it. Solid 8.0+ game for me.

This game is the best at simulating the feeling of "Intense Anime Fight," especially boss fights. It's fast-paced rather than "methodical" which is my cup of tea. The kind of game that stimulate your reaction time and strategic thinking at the same time. You would be learning enemies pattern to evade their attacks by good positoning or timing your evasion and looking for a chance to strike your combo. What make them feel like "Intense Anime Fight"? - Enemies patterns are over the top... in a good way. Some of them might seem impossible at first but with the spirit of Shounen's "Retry again until we succeed," I have learnt to tackle them and it feel rewarding, eventhough a very few of them still feel like cheap shots (I am looking at you Gemini... both of you... and the Final Form of the Final Boss ) Also difficulty+ challenge new game+ in this game allow not only tougher enemies but also them having entirely new attack pattern that would make you relearn and adapt to their new pattern. This does make each new game+ run feel fresh and not tedious. - Your characters could be built to do almost over-the-top attack/spell as well especially when you unlock newer spell and newer skill triggers. One of your playable characters even has "teleport behind the back" as their main skill while another has "Parry Everything" main skill. Such power fantasy. What!? downside!? but I thought I am invincible! - This is YMMV but spell slot system might feel clunky for some even after getting used to it. On one hand, it adds even more strategic thinking for players to built their own combo but it also depreciate the utilities of each individual spell and later on when the fight are too intense it would just turn into button mashing fest for your spell to do the maximum damage without any utilities value at all. - I hate hate hate hate hate Zodiac Minigames. It's only one try and you will waste one room without any reward if you failed. If this Zodiac minigame only reward you resources it would be okay but they will give you summon... the whole new game system locked behind the (non action) minigames that I am very bad at in an action game!?... It's funny that I beat the game without using summon at all, not because I am very good I want to challenge myself, but because I was very bad at one aspect of the game (non-action aspect in action game) so I can't get any summons. - The stat boost in this game is too random. I mean randomness is roguelike/roguelite aspect but it's only fun when it's about the character built (spells, weapons, weapon's aspect, skills etc.) but most of roguelite game has flat number stat boost as their meta progression where players can choose. (well, this game have it as well but you can on lt unlock it later in game.) And stat boost really differ because some stats are better than other. Go for STR and ARMOR stat everytime, Mana stat could be less of a problem later in game and you don't need that much, critical chance is useless if you only get 2-3 of them entire run compared to flat damage. IMO stat boost should not be random because I could create artificial difficulty where some run are better than other because STR and ARMOR state boost keep coming up I could make a lot of mistake and hit back enemies harder without even have to spell spamming that much, while others were somewhat more difficult just because my stats were all over the place. Still worth a try Still all these downsides, while worth considering for better balance game, this game is still a blast. Give it a try If you love fun fast pace action games and don't mind simple but fluid and dazzling animation.
