Balrum will be a delight for fans of isometric, old-school RPGs. The game is mostly about exploration—the maps are big, with lots of crooks and crannies to discover and loot! It also features crafting, base building, and trading systems you can exploit to make your adventures a bit easier. As far as companions go you only get one pet, but honestly, I felt that was enough. Oh yeah, don’t kill the chickens—it pisses off the villagers, and everyone in your town is stronger than you. Even the old lady who sells vegetables packs a punch. Carrots to the face hurt! The combat system is turn-based in a smart way: enemies only move when you do, so you can take your time planning your next moves—or just go in blades blazing and try to take them out before they do the same to you. Time stops when you stop. It’s pretty simple, but it works. Some locations offer interesting and challenging puzzles that reward your cleverness with nice loot. I was never disappointed with what I got for solving them. The soundtrack has a rustic, medieval vibe, and the art style really leans into that early-2000s isometric RPG look—it’ll definitely hit your nostalgia button. The game does have a few drawbacks. There’s no running speed, so you’ll be walking everywhere. Fast travel unlocks later on, so the early game can feel a bit slow. Also, there’s no way to reset your skill points—so you need to plan your build carefully or risk messing it up. Achievement-wise, most are tied to reaching certain stats or defeating story and hidden bosses. Some are tricky or missable, but there are guides on Steam to help you out. Expect to spend about 180 hours to get them all. Balrum gets 57 spiders hidden inside barrels out of 70 times I had to walk all the way back to town to sell most of my loot—because I’m a damn hoarding goblin and can’t stand leaving anything behind.

If you're a fan of the Avernum trilogy, you'll probably enjoy this title. Less dialogue and only control a single character (plus a pet if you choose) Haven't encountered any of the game breaking bugs people have mentioned, yet. [Purchased on sale for ~$3.50]

A strong entry the turn based RPG genre. It has the nostalgic feel of Genesis and SNES games but has a lot more depth. There are times where it becomes a slog and could do with pacing adjustments on the some of the quests, but overall its fun and well worth playing.

Hello traveler. TLDR: Game is good, very old school like feeling. Nice story, very basic but engaging, you are the hero, you save your people. The story is definitely basic. But not in a bad way. Without spoiler too much. You are a hero, and you start your journey with uncovering the secrets behind disappearance of some people in your village. While you do all the quests, you uncover more about your parents, about the world around you. And with progression, it becomes more heroic. You gonna fight undead, see dragons, fight evil. Story is told through scrolls you find thanks to exploration, and from npcs. Also with environment story telling. You are basically the white man on a quest to save your loved one from certain death. There are puzzles, they are not too hard, but also not as easy like the modern AAA puzzles. You gonna have to use your thinking box a bit. But it feels rewarding, you get a warm feeling around your heart. And also good loot that you can use in most cases. Exploration feels good. There are bunch of dungeons you can explore, with own bosses inside and loot. So it is almost always worth to enter one. Also the world is handcrafted, and the dungeons do feel different from each other. Gameplay. The enemies are generally a small challenge, so the potions, food and other misc items do feel like they have purpose. Crafting, like alchemy and cooking can make the fights much easier for you, So when you get your potions, food, magic scrolls etc. it is better to use them for fights then to stockpile for big bosses. You will be able to have enough, thanks to crafting, shops or just finding "stealing" it. Moving your character is bit odd. I would recommend to turn on the grid and use right click often instead of WASD. Questing. It is like old school games. You get a marker on your map sometime, but no arrows or anything in the modern game way. You have to read the quests to know what to do. Don't worry, no need to read a book, it is 1 to 2 small pages only. Combat itself isn't anything special. Turnbased, you choose ability, you use it. I played as mage. You get bunch of cool spells. Little cool detail, when you kill animal with fireball, the meat is cooked already. Personal note? Well, I would recommend this game for its story, the handcrafted world, a crafting system that does add to the gameplay a lot. Oh, and you can build your own home in your little safespace, where you can craft all the stuff.

Game has its issues but it's a lot of fun as long as you don't play it in the hardest mode. You follow the story (which starts out great, but then loses quality) and do some side quests to get more experience. Monsters do not respawn and are generally not worth killing because they barely give experience. You have your own house you can build and craft stuff in. I finished the game as a warrior (using some spells) in the hardest mode and it was frustrating and had to save-scum all the time because I always had like 50% chance to hit due to the game mechanics. Then I finished it again in mage in normal difficulty (followed the main story and it took me less than 10 hours) so I could get the remaining achievements, and it was a lot more fun. I could have played a third time as an archer (I hear it's the best class) but there wasn't more achievements to get. I enjoyed over 100 hours of fun almost for free. Recommended.
