Generic medieval Underrail with base building and cool loot and pretty good character building.

A Hidden Gem in the World of Isometric RPGs I’ve spent a bit of time diving into this game, and I have to say, it’s a fantastic experience for anyone who enjoys a deep, slow-burn RPG with a focus on world exploration and craftsmanship. While the game does have some challenging combat and slow progression (which some might find off-putting), there’s something incredibly satisfying about how the non-combat mechanics are woven into the experience. First off, the world itself is rich and rewarding to explore, but what really sets it apart is the variety of activities you can engage in, like farming, cooking, smelting, and crafting. A lot of players tend to overlook these elements, especially cooking, but honestly, they make a huge difference—particularly in the earlier stages of the game when gear is more limited. The stat boosts from cooking dishes may only last for a few turns, but they can give you just the edge you need to take on tougher enemies. Crafting, in particular, is a game-changer. The game is very much tilted towards warriors in terms of loot, but for non-warrior builds, crafting is essential. I found myself using almost all crafted gear for my mage character, and it’s a huge boost to be able to make your own armor and weapons. The addition of a critical crafting chance, which occasionally results in slightly stronger gear, is such a cool touch. It feels like a real sense of progression, and the craftsmanship makes a difference when you’re trying to survive in this brutal world. Farming is another aspect of the game that can’t be ignored. Sure, it’s a bit of a grind at times, especially since your skill points are limited early on. But even though it takes time (and a lot of running around to water plants), the rewards are worth it. Mages, in particular, benefit a lot from farming, as they can grow some really useful plants that help offset slow mana regen. It’s a slow process, but the sense of accomplishment when you finally harvest a crop is incredibly satisfying. The cooking system is probably my favorite of all the crafting options, though. Even with just 2 points in cooking, the stat boosts are significant enough to make a noticeable difference. It’s not something you can rely on for the entire game, but it’s such an invaluable tool for survival in tough fights. One feature that I really appreciate is the hidden skill books scattered throughout the world. It adds an element of discovery and reward, though not every skill has a book, which keeps things balanced. Once you’ve played through the game once and familiarized yourself with the world, a second playthrough becomes easier, but the challenge is still there. It’s a great feeling to know that the world holds secrets and you get to slowly uncover them, one by one. In terms of difficulty, this game doesn’t pull punches. The enemies are tough, and it’s definitely not a hack-and-slash fest. The slow level progression means that by the end of the game, you’re still only around level 12, even though the max level is supposedly 25. But this slow growth is part of what makes the game feel immersive and rewarding—the journey really is more important than the destination. All in all, this game offers a refreshing take on the isometric RPG genre. The crafting and non-combat systems are integral to the experience, and if you take the time to embrace them, you’ll find a lot of depth and satisfaction beyond just combat. If you’re someone who loves exploring every nook and cranny of a game world, and doesn’t mind slow, thoughtful progress, then this is definitely one to check out.

This game is a hidden gem. It's really addictive, mostly thanks to its charming graphic design and intuitive combat mechanics. I loved not just the pixelart, also the lighting projected by the torches, trinkets, and mushrooms, which made the forest colorful even at night, the scenarios felt alive. Also, animations are really smooth. I was surprised by the complexity of the map and the depth of the NPCs. Not all the side quests may be interesting, but most of the characters have their own little story, which I like in this kind of games. The main maps are huge, but luckily you get to teleport and even build your own house in the safe zone, making backtracking easier. I found myself brewing different potions, cooking recipes, and baking bread most of the time, yet it didn't feel repetitive. Some things reminded me of RPGs I love: talking dragons (Skyrim), a ton of side quests and isometric view (Sacred Gold), and the trial and error lockpicking mechanic (straight out of Gothic). I feel like Balrum is overlooked. Progression may feel slow at times, but definitely this game is my cup of tea.

Balrum will be a delight for fans of isometric, old-school RPGs. The game is mostly about exploration—the maps are big, with lots of crooks and crannies to discover and loot! It also features crafting, base building, and trading systems you can exploit to make your adventures a bit easier. As far as companions go you only get one pet, but honestly, I felt that was enough. Oh yeah, don’t kill the chickens—it pisses off the villagers, and everyone in your town is stronger than you. Even the old lady who sells vegetables packs a punch. Carrots to the face hurt! The combat system is turn-based in a smart way: enemies only move when you do, so you can take your time planning your next moves—or just go in blades blazing and try to take them out before they do the same to you. Time stops when you stop. It’s pretty simple, but it works. Some locations offer interesting and challenging puzzles that reward your cleverness with nice loot. I was never disappointed with what I got for solving them. The soundtrack has a rustic, medieval vibe, and the art style really leans into that early-2000s isometric RPG look—it’ll definitely hit your nostalgia button. The game does have a few drawbacks. There’s no running speed, so you’ll be walking everywhere. Fast travel unlocks later on, so the early game can feel a bit slow. Also, there’s no way to reset your skill points—so you need to plan your build carefully or risk messing it up. Achievement-wise, most are tied to reaching certain stats or defeating story and hidden bosses. Some are tricky or missable, but there are guides on Steam to help you out. Expect to spend about 180 hours to get them all. Balrum gets 57 spiders hidden inside barrels out of 70 times I had to walk all the way back to town to sell most of my loot—because I’m a damn hoarding goblin and can’t stand leaving anything behind.

If you're a fan of the Avernum trilogy, you'll probably enjoy this title. Less dialogue and only control a single character (plus a pet if you choose) Haven't encountered any of the game breaking bugs people have mentioned, yet. [Purchased on sale for ~$3.50]
