Dec. 2024
I played Beat Hazard during my childhood, so I am genuinely surprised to see the game is still alive in 2024. My overall experience is good, I haven't played this game for a long time so I need to familiarize myself again. It's still the same game, with few changes and things that made my experience pretty sour. First of all, the move to 3D graphics is cool and shows how the game have progressed since the first title. Despite a change in the game engine, it still plays the same like the 2D games before this. The added features such as ship customization, and the ability to create your own galaxy/campaign is a welcome addition. Haven't explored the galaxy creation much, and will try it at a later time. That is, in one factor, because the user interface is super confusing. All text use the same font and it is painful to see. Buttons and menus are cluttered. It is not acceptable to have this approach in UI/UX at today's age. The game also uses AI art to illustrate icons. These AI icons have contrasting style with the overall Beat Hazard aesthetic, and made the game cheaper that it actually is. Overall I still recommend this game. The core gameplay is still the same, with added features. But I would warn you about those issues, if you're okay with that then by all means play this game. If not, then stick to the first Beat Hazard and you won't miss anything.

This game is absolutely insane. After playing the first two games extensively, I just can't get over the vastness of this game. It has like five times more content and stuff that I haven't even explored yet. This game will actually get you listening to new and old music again and keep you entranced for hours. Big ups to this developer. Just when you thought you couldn't possibly get better than Beat Hazard 2 we get this gem. Amazing job with this game! I guess third time is the charm. If you're sleeping on this game don't. Worth full price.

So based on the minimal percentage of people with low hanging achievements of this game, it's pretty obvious it's either not very popular, or people don't play it seriously. I played Beat Hazard 2 quite a bit for this type of game, and now having played this one for almost ten hours, I can definitely see why I prefer part 2 over this. I can appreciate the way this game uses random generation in creating new ships as a reward. I also appreciate the attempt to create some sort of community through the use of randomly generating galaxies for fellow players to explore. Howerve, don't go into that option with tons of excitement. Depending on how much music you use, it would take a lot more effort than it's worth creating one. I have accumulated quite the collection of music in my life, and sitting around configuring everything in my galaxy would take more time than it's worth. It is also hard for me to justify spending time creating something when how many other people are out there generating galaxies and configuring them for the same music? I'm not a fan of redundant work. Also, given how few people appear to be playing it, it doubly isn't worth the time. The biggest loss to me is the inability to truly make and configure your own ship. While you can modify the stats of ships you find, the inability to custom make a ship really hurts the game. Especially since in the ten hours of playing a variety of different kinds of music, I have yet to find a ship that has some backward firing bullets or beams. I definitely like some of the new weapons and enemies added to the game. The new ability to briefly fire a beam to defeat enemy shields and other weaponry is an interesting tactical addition. I'll play long enough to fully build out all the weapons and maybe modify the stats of some ship that I particularly like. Incidentally, that is one achievement I have that such a low percentage of people have that blew my mind, is having all of the addtional weapons. That takes little effort to achieve. Odds are I'll go back to playing BH2 whenever I'm carving to just listen to music and play a shooter. I love the ship I made for that game, and it just makes playing it much more enjoyable. It's worth checking out this game. I don't give it an outrageously high recommendation, but it's good simple fun with enough difference between the graphics, weapons, and enemies to make it worth trying if you've played the previous installments of the game.

Game is real good, elevated even more if you use a virtual output for your Open Mic source so you can still be in a voice chat or listening to something else at the same time without that interfering. Solo play has been great so far! Both the galaxy campaign mode and arcade modes have been a lot of fun. Having some weird bugs with screen sharing cooperative play, though: Attempting to start any Standard mode in Party play will cause the game to end instantly when using Open Mic but Survival works just fine. Neither of those modes properly do the listening countdown for Open Mic and just go straight into the match, that might be related.

Now, I will preface this with saying that Beat Hazard 3 does not EXACTLY supercede Beat Hazard 2, you'll need a relatively strong device (or at least a working graphics card) to play on it's highest intensities. And also a whole epileptic warning, though it's strobing can be reduced in it's totality WITHOUT compromising gameplay effectiveness. Also for a good chunk of it's gameplay it DOES require SOME access to a streaming platform (Like youtube), thankfully selectable these days. You can still play the game even it's galaxy mode with music you downloaded but won't be able to participate online against others with it. Also don't expect it have workshop as 2 has. That said, Beat Hazard 3 is a CONSIDERABLE leg up from it's previous iteration and not just because it jumps from 2D (technically 2.5D) to 3D. To start with, the Galaxy mode, which a few mechanics revolve around. You get access to your own capital ship, which is responsible for how many ships you may have. (Yes it's no longer unlimited unlike in 2.) But also traversal, scanning and the boost system which has been integrated into the ship building part, rather than unlocking and activating. Scanning will prove to be a considerable resource sink but a very useful one as, within the galaxy mode map, you can scan a range of the area and it may highlight songs (planets) within the area that can resources such as blueprints, which can be used to unlock new sub weapons (some that actually see the light of day in high intensities.) Further allow customization of your ship with the new tuning system by allowing you to unlock overclock points. And turn a standard ship of your choice into an elite. Oh yeah, you can turn basically any ship into an elite now, It is an undertaking to do, but you can in fact have *effectively* purely unique ships from your own downloaded song list. Along with that, the module system from beat hazard 2 is replaced with the aforementioned ship tuning a more granular method to tune up just about any ship in your hangar to even be comparable with some elites. Shadow Missions can grant a few extra to eke out even more from what I consider a pretty generous system to maximize the potential of a ship without it needing to be the MAGNUM OPUS of proceedually generated ships. Within Galaxies there is also Wraith "Manufacturer" Ships. A ship type that can be only found in galaxy scans, but instead of being generated, you take a pick from the pre-made list of them to see which one you want. No you don't get to preview them. And yes they are going to need a tune up, but a nice option if you don't intend to go elite hunting. There is plenty to go about from Galaxy Elite ships (yes it's different from an elite.) to the constant challenges it tosses with every song a person plays, give people who participate a change to get an elite of that song's ship. But this will likely drown out the review going in THAT much depth. It isn't without it's flaws though. The change in how scoring works between 2 and 3 can confuse some as there is no way to know outside of guides, the lack of workshop accessibility can be seen as a con between 2 and 3 for some. And the way the game handles picking up music that is not downloaded can be seen as inconvenient when wanting to discuss with people on something like discord without a technical workaround, but it's still a treat of a game. A product of it's olden times given a unique spin and made more and more elaborate until what you see today. TL;DR: Beat Hazard 3, while it is not a FULL upgrade from Beat Hazard 2, is a nice game if you intend to make full use of the galaxy system and explore the world you make out of your own music. A couple of it's options that could have been seen as gated by "high level play" have become more accessible to obtain by alternate means. If you want to explore your music library in a cosmonaut flavoring? This is a game you can try! if you prefer to be more arcadey with it, this is still a good choice but I can direct your attention to beat hazard 2!
