PROS: - The best WWI FPS that I've played to date. - Incredible SFX. - Great visual and historical attention to detail (for the most part). - Immersive, especially when there's other players (I'll get to this in a second). Cons - Where is everyone? I played today (Saturday) with 26 players in a server. During the week, there's only bots. - The bots are a low-effort afterthought. They don't give orders, form sections, build emplacements, etc. - Poorly optimized and the game will render weirdly sometimes. - There's a bit of a learning curve with classes and unlocking kit. Unfortunately, you can't really work on leveling up your classes with bots because you're forced to be a section leader. You miss out on a large portion of the game because of this. I refuse to call this "dead" because there is a small group that still plays this and it could truly be better than HLL or Isonzo. The devs need to hand this one off or get involved in it again. At the very least, make better bots and the ability to (easily) create private servers. I feel compelled to recommend it though because, in spite of the cons, I keep coming back to it. It has its moments for sure.

Yeah, the game's dead, I know. But it's a really good game. Even playing with bots, it's fun. I don't play it more because, again, it's filled with bots, but how is it gonna change? How are we gonna change this? Well, by playing the game. So maybe, if you have it, just download it and play it. When the game is on sale, buy it, get it for your friends. And I think we should play more so we can get this game up and running again! It's really cool, I really hope people start playing "Squad 18" again. And when everyone says that developers don't show love to it, it's because no one's playing. So MAYBE, if we start to show that we like this shit, developers might give a fuck, and might come back to it. But yeah, I still like it, it's really fun, really enjoyable, I really hope more people play. And that's it. By the way, it's not even expensive, so might as well just buy it, you know? So instead of saying, "Dead as fuck," "Game is dead," "Dead game," Game went out faster than a cabbage," "I played 45 minutes by myself in a lobby filled with bots. It's dead. Three servers and all were empty. (...) I cannot recommend it." Boys, instead of complaining, play the FUGGING game, and maybe the developers will see that actually people care and want to play it. Leaving a bad review is not gonna change anything, so we might as well just... play.

First off: I'm going to recommend this game in spite of the very true position being taken by those who have not recommended it. The game has a low player count and even with the addition of bots to pad the servers, its fairly lonely in there (most of the time). However, this is how it shall remain forever if people simply turn away from it. Someone has to pioneer the way for others to follow. Beyond the wire is a truly incredible game. Its not "the hell let loose of WW1"....it's the Squad of WW1 but given the 100 years time difference between where Squad is set and when this is set, it gives a totally different feel and different mechanics come into play more. Melee weapons in particular see far more use in the trenches and shell craters of the Western front in 1917 than they do in the 2010s/2020s of faster paced conflicts that are reflected in Squad. Weapons in this game feel weighty, connecting rounds from trusty bolt action rifle feels like an achievement and closing with the enemy with a club wrapped in a strand of barbed wire, down in the trenches, is a thrill. As with all things Squad and Post Scriptum (now Squad '44), everything is beautifully animated and the sound design is absolutely spot on. It's a niche timeline, there's very little out there to compete with this. Verdun, Tannenburg and Ionzo are all great but are nowhere near as mechanically complex or brilliant as this. Post Scriptum was totally dead once, now rebranded as Squad '44 its having a revival, its slowly but steadily coming back to life. There is absolutely no reason that the same can't be done with Beyond the Wire. Read the negative reviews on here, most admit its a brilliant game, its main issue is that there aren't enough people who have it and therefore the playerbase is sparse. Let's change that.

It looks like it could have been a really cool game but I seem to have gotten here too late. I have run around in an empty server and it looks great. Wish there were bots.

The Game Truly deserves better, it is very fun to play, but sadly, unless you find a dedicated unit somewhere like on Discord, there are pretty much no players on any of the last few servers, though, it is definitely worth picking up.
