Rating: 7/10 🎩 Holdfast: Nations At War — where military discipline goes to die with dignity. Imagine putting 150 armed gentlemen onto one battlefield, giving them muskets, bayonets and proximity voice chat, then expecting anything resembling organised warfare. Naturally, within thirty seconds, someone is blasting music, another chap is delivering a passionate speech about the Empire, and your commanding officer has been shot before finishing the word “CHARGE!” ⚔️ The average Holdfast experience: 🔸 Spend half a minute carefully loading your musket. 🔸 Take aim at an enemy standing perfectly still. 🔸 Miss him by approximately three neighbouring countries. 🔸 Get stabbed by a screaming Frenchman. 🔸 Respawn and do it all again with immense patriotic enthusiasm. The gunplay is slow, inaccurate and deeply frustrating—which is precisely why it works. Every successful shot feels like divine intervention, while every bayonet duel resembles two intoxicated pensioners fighting over the final reduced sandwich at Tesco. 🎙️ The proximity chat is the real weapon. The community transforms every battle into a glorious mixture of historical roleplay, tactical communication, terrible accents and complete psychological collapse. Your musket may fail you, but the gentleman screaming “FOR KING AND COUNTRY!” directly into your ear never will. There are large land battles, cavalry, artillery, naval warfare and enough different classes to ensure everyone can find their preferred method of dying pointlessly. 🏅 Final verdict Holdfast is barely a serious military simulator. It is, however, an outstanding Napoleonic comedy generator disguised as one. It is clumsy. It is chaotic. It is occasionally held together by musket smoke and national stereotypes. And somehow, it is absolutely bloody brilliant. Would follow an incompetent officer directly into enemy cannon fire again.
The best time to buy Holdfast is now. In the last year we've had like three major updates, Age of Sail, Scottish Christmas one (forgot name lol), and in June revolutionary war! Even had Frontlines a WW1 expansion a couple years back. All of those are the size of updates other studios would have you pay £20+ more for, all free. Devs listen to community, run events, very active on social media. Community is booming right now (21/5/26) for those wondering and asking is the game alive. It is alive, and it is awesome. Gameplay is so much fun, easy to learn. Teamwork essential, more players on VOIP than that aren't on, lots of joking around, good leadership. Games just awesome, brits need to download so we can smash US in the revolutionary war update and rewrite some history
Unfortunately my mental ilness made me to buy the BF6 before I found Holdfast. It's an indescribable feeling when you attack a fortress with your brothers in arms. Unfortunately some Fortnite kids turn on their annoying stpd music then you muted them and continue to enjoy the game. And my special thanks for the players who acts like they're on a battlefield, stands in line, follows the officers' orders, and, of course, sings songs in formation, the highest degree of immersion. This is what keeps me coming back to this game every day.
Just a fun, quick to pick up and play game. I generally end up laughing my buttocks off. Random people talking to themselves or talkin smack to other players as they engage in 1 on 1 combat. People take the musician role very serious. Melee combat is fun, able to block and attack in 4 directions. Can also be played serious with more historical minded players. There are servers that host more organized events. The new Age of Sail update transforms the game into Pirates of the Caribbean and its really well done. We had to abandon ship and had a full rowboat and was getting over taken by frigate chasing a spanish 50 gun ship. Very Epic. Teams that work together win but usually its all fun. Having a mic makes the game alot more fun.
