Disclaimer: I've played this game before and wanted to show my support by buying the steam release and future replays. I found myself wandering through a world of nightmares masked by dreams, enveloped in love, lust, sin and insanity. Ever since I was a child, I've been infatuated by fairy tales. From Disney adaptations to eventually reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel and some of the Grimms' Fairy Tales when I got a little older. It definitely had an impact on my creativity and lead to my habit of day dreaming. There's something so whimsical and innocent about them that layers over the top of the more graphic and mature history lying on the underside. Twisting that whimsy and innocence into something grotesque, horrifying, and almost unrecognizable can create very powerful interpretations of the original work and themes. I've always had a thing for dark fairy tales and that's whats led me to Black Souls. I won't really be writing about how this spoke to and impacted me personally but I wanted to write about some of the things I thought it did really well. Black Souls II crafted a grimdark world in which I could easily lose hours and days into exploring and unraveling. Toro's world building has been a joy to see evolve. After finishing Black Souls 1, I went back and played Red Hood's Woods. A short 3 hour precursor to the Black Souls series and despite the spotty translation, had an interesting spin on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale but was lacking on the RPG side. Definitely check it out if you're thinking about diving into the series (both games have some callbacks and references for the fans), very creatively inspiring too. BSII expands on emphasizing the exploration, ramping up the freedom, multiple paths lie in wait for you, even before the first boss. Charming and unique cast of core and side characters to meet and fall in love with, beautiful set pieces to discover, rich lore to immerse yourself in and piece together. There’s so much to love about the world of Black Souls II. BSII takes joy in making you uncomfortable, refusing to conform in its approach to storytelling and presentation, unabashedly itself (something I really admire). Incredibly fun to go into blind and lose yourself down the rabbit hole of madness. There's always something new to see, something around every corner, something you didn't see your last cycle. A perfect example of ludonarrative harmony, BSII incentivizes replaying through cycles to get almost entirely different playthroughs of the same game. Ever inching closer to the goal only to find yourself right back at the start as the curtains rise once again, questioning your actions as you begin to explore again. Bosses you might've fought your first playthrough all of a sudden become new characters for you to interact with on a new cycle. Scenes you would've otherwise missed out on become available as you learn and understand the mechanics of Wonderland as well as the layout to be able to progress in the story. The addition of the Chaos Dungeon is brilliant, providing an area to endlessly explore and grind for OP items, spells, weapons and of course, SOULS, giving it immense replayability. Plenty of H-Scenes to collect too, indulge as you wish. BSII fleshes out the RPG mechanics of the previous games. Translating the Souls experience to Turn-Based RPG perfectly while still keeping their own originality in mechanics. Extremely addicting and adrenaline inducing, I've never wanted to spend my every waking moment playing with a combat system before this game. Allowing for almost endless customization, changing builds for different bosses becomes borderline puzzle solving. Learning how to switch between weapons and when to time each switch becomes mandatory. DLC3 puts everything into the difficulty, requiring a deeper understanding of the games mechanics, its not something you can brute force your way through like after your first couple of cycles. Some of the most fun I've had interacting with RPG mechanics since Xenogears back in 2023. Every fight is tense and brutal, barely surviving by the hairs on my back. I'd love to replay BSII for a difficulty 9 playthrough in the future. I fell in love with Toro's art style almost immediately when I started BS1 but its here in BSII where his style takes a huge step in evolution. Possibly one of my favorites, invoking a very raw, grimy and horrifying feeling, keeping that same amateurish style of sketching in-tacked, while still only increasing in talent and progress. From what Toro has shown of Red Dead Hood so far, he's only improving in his art style as he continues to create. SPOILERS FOR DLC3 AHEAD Please skip over if you haven't played it yet Black Souls II looks deeper into the relationship of Lewis Carroll and the Liddell family, specifically his relationship with Alice. Something very striking I took away was the memories you collect and the ADV Visual Novel section close to the end of DLC3, Grimm dreams about memories of the Liddell family, as the days progress in the dream it slowly descends into a psychological horror centered around the Liddell family. When Grimm wakes from the dream he states that it was a nightmare. My interpretation of these scenes is criticism of Lewis Carroll, the person, and the actions and behavior he took and made around the Liddell family. Spinning theories about why the Liddell family distanced themselves from him (possible indecency or marriage proposal to Alice on his part, we will never know) into an HP Lovecraft influenced tragedy provides for an incredible meta-narrative of falling into the abyss of regret, guilt, dread, defilement, and what it means to struggle as Grimm pushes forward in his mechanical stage play of descent to the tune of the gods. Black Souls II is an ambitious project brimming with passion. Putting heart and soul into creating and developing these ideas. Toro’s genius and brilliance shine from start to finish, a one of a kind experience, creatively invigorating monumental release for indie games and love letter to the original works and influences. Thank you Toro, Eeny, meeny, miny, moe? and the translation team. Incredibly excited to play Red Dead Hood whenever it and a translation release. PS: Miranda/Meryphilia best girl
