FYI, most of my time playing BBTAG was on PS4 and Switch, which explains the low playtime on Steam. For better or worse, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle had a lot of ups and downs, but overall it was a net positive experience for me. When it was announced as a crossover featuring mostly upscaled sprites from ArcSys and French Bread games, I was hesitant. However, the announcement of RWBY characters with brand new sprites and movesets piqued my interest, leading me to watch RWBY Seasons 1-3. The initially small roster that required many DLC characters was a huge disappointment. Thankfully, by the final DLC packs, I'd say the roster is worth it—if you can get at least a 30% discount on everything. The story modes were fun in a mindless way but nothing special. The DLC story mode was slightly better, being more thought out and featuring more characters, but ultimately it was just a fun time-waster. As for the core gameplay, it's overall fun but a bit too chaotic for me to play at a competitive level. Many people complained about the simplified button layout, which I understand; however, I thought it was absolutely necessary to maintain some semblance of balance among the large roster. The game has an easy-to-pick-up air dasher format typical of ArcSys fighting games with assists clearly inspired by Marvel vs. Capcom. The ability to have all three assists from a character at any time is a significant upgrade over Marvel vs. Capcom and Dragon Ball FighterZ, where you can only pick one at a time. Sadly, I'm not fond of the game being based on large character-switching combos leading to (almost) instant deaths as the meta. This aspect has only worsened over time, which is another reason I would not play this game competitively. I'm glad ArcSys set the standard for Japanese developers by implementing rollback netcode in everything. The fact that they were able to retrofit this on the PC version is why I ultimately picked it up; it's the only version I'll play going forward. BBTag is a solid game for casual play and slight competition but ultimately didn't excel in either area, especially with all the paid DLC you have to acquire. Otherwise, it's pretty fun but not a great ArcSys fighting game.
