Honestly, I have mixed feelings towards this game. It is a bit difficult to describe, but I will try as best as I can. Boyfriend Dungeon is a rogue-lite dungeon crawler, where you can date your weapons. By dating them (and fighting with them), you level up your bond and they get stronger (get special attacks). By farming dungeons, your character will level up and get stronger (more health and damage). There are three dungeons in total and they are easy enough, if your familiar with rogue-lites. However, the tags in Steam are a bit misleading – if you only know dating sims, the dungeons might be hard. The “dating”/story aspect of the game is pretty straightforward as well. As you get to know the weapon-people and “bond” with them, they’ll invite you to dates (one per bond level). The dates are rather short, however, if you count all weapon-people, it takes a while to get through all of them. Still, as you can see, I completed all achievements in about 13h, so you can imagine how short the dating events are. The story is also why I have mixed feelings towards this game. Boyfriend Dungeon is a very ambitious project: It tries to be inclusive; it tries to bring positivity and encouragement (for different kinds of hardships – loss, depression, anxiety…); it tries to convey the struggles of a diverse character cast with different personalities and life goals and it tries to combine all that with dungeons. The dungeons (dunjs) are even based on the main character’s fears. But there is so much you can do, so much you can pack in a game that has only three dungeons, six events per character and 13 hours of playtime. It doesn’t mean that the game is bad at what it does, but it also feels like an unfinished skeleton of “what it might have been”s.
Loved the game. Hated the end boss. 3/5 stars because the end boss was so terrible. The game made no attempt to prepare the player for the end boss's moves. None. I'm sure if I watched a youtube video the strat would be clear-cut. My advice: skip the last boss fight and declare victory. The only thing after the last boss fight is credits, so who cares?
Buy on sale. Don't get me wrong, I like this game a lot! The art is fun, and it's nice to have mini-quests rather than just clicking through a VN (the combat isn't difficult if that's not your bag). I really only spent time with Isaac on this run, but I hear tell that you can have deepening platonic relationships w/o the romance element, which is awesome and I wish more games did that. I do think it was just a little short for the price tag, though. I kind of blitzed through my run-through, but I have to imagine that even during a run where someone is taking their time, it's not more than four or five hours to play.
At the time, i had never played a game like this before. I knew i liked pixel boyfriends so i decided to give it a shot on a friends recommendation. I went in with zero expectations and left emotionally attached to a sword, so that's that i guess lol. This game is what happens when someone looks at a dating sim and a dungeon crawler and says NOW KISS. The loop is simple but weirdly addictive. You dive into dungeons, fight monsters, level up your weapons, and then those weapons turn into very attractive people who want to hang out and talk about their feelings. It is like if Hades and a dating app had a very emotionally available child. The relationships build pretty quickly, which I love. You are not stuck grinding affection for ten hours just to get someone to acknowledge your existence. Everyone has their own vibe too. Some are sweet, some are intense, some are walking red flags that you will absolutely still try to fix (guilty). Combat is simple but satisfying as well. It is not super deep, but it doesn't need to be. Each weapon type feels different enough to keep things interesting and honestly half the motivation to fight is just unlocking more dialogue and dates. The writing is where it really shines. It's funny and a little awkward on purpose but surprisingly sincere. It leans into that millennial anxiety energy in a way that feels relatable instead of exhausting. Also it deserves credit for handling boundaries and consent in a way that feels natural which is way more rare than it should be btw. The art style is BEAUTIFUL and the character designs are killer. You will have a favorite immediately and you will defend them to the death. You will also ignore obvious warning signs and red flags for that favorite. If I had to complain, I do wish there was just a bit more depth in the dungeon side of things. After a while it can feel a little repetitive. But also I was not here for a hardcore roguelike. I was here to emotionally bond with a broadsword. Overall it is short, weird, and super fun. If you like dating sims and questioning your attraction to inanimate objects, this is worth the cash.
