There's a kind of freedom to the writing of this game. A lot of rules of like "no, that's too stupid, we can't put that in" are completely ignored and because of that the game has a unique, and fun, identity

If you told me that one day I'd be excited for a Bubsy game I'd call you a liar, but here we are. Bubsy 4D finally lifts the bobcat's curse and delivers one of the best-feeling 3D Platformers I've played in an incredibly long time. The movement and momentum feel great, the music is fantastic and Bubsy is actually kind of charming for once! I will definitely be 100%ing this game. Update: I did 100% this game! Including Nine Lives mode. Very fun! The game is on the easier side but I do have a lot of experience in 3D Platformers. My initial review still stands, with the caveat that for it's current price tag it might be a little too short for some people. I look forward to coming back to this again in future the way I do with games like Sonic Adventure 2. Well done Bubsy, and congratulations Fabraz for making such a banger!

Alright, let me start this off by saying that I used to be a certified Bubsy HATER! My cousin used to play these games all the time. I don't know why. I never saw the appeal. The cat looked stupid. It played like crap. I beat the first level on the first game and decided I hate it forever. I watched my cousin play Bubsy 3D. He liked it for some reason. I hated it. I absolutely couldn't STAND Bubsy and his chatter. His design sucked. Everything SUCKED! I didn't even get excited or into the newer games in recent years. I was like "Oh ugh BUBSY, whatever". I did mellow out, but I still disliked Bubsy. Just never "did it" for me. But I got this game, and I was like "Ok, Bubsy. You and I don't mix, but I'm gonna see what happens.". I bought it. I didn't care about pre-release AT ALL. It was "just another Bubsy". But now I played it, and Bubsy doesn't sound annoying. It just kinda reminds me of those old cartoons I used to watch. A lazy platformer mascot that doesn't like platforming but does it anyway because people force him to. That works. It just works. I'm not gonna lie, it works. The game is kinda meant to be speedran I suppose, and it didn't take long to get used to it at all. It's VERY fun, which is surprising and shocking to me. I may now be a fan of this specific game. I wouldn't call myself a Bubsy mega fan, but you know what? Bubsy's alright. He came back, he never gave up, and now we're pals. Good on ya, Bubsy. You finally got me to say I like you and your game. That's good enough for me.

Non-glazing, non spoiler, honest review incoming: It's a good game. I wouldn't say it's great, but it's very nice. It does enough right, however, it's biggest Achilles heel is that it's short, especially for it's asking price. I was actually able to beat this game in 3.4 hours, totaling 15 stages and 3 bosses. Personally, I think that warrants a price between $12.99 and $14.99, not so much $19.99. A big focal point of this Bubsy game is that at the push of a button, Bubsy can snap into a ball for high speed gameplay. It's fun to use, and pretty much every stage is tailored in some way around this mechanic. You'll very frequently find yourself rolling down high speed half-pipes that launch Bubsy into the air. This ball form is basically meant to feel fast, and it does hit the mark, although there were plenty of times where the controls felt a bit slippery, and lots of times where big jumps didn't feel properly tuned for Bubsy to clear them, forcing me out of ball mode in mid air and having to navigate a manual landing. These things aren't so flawed that they totally ruin the ball mode sections of the game, but they are there. The ball controls feel sharp in an 8/10 kind of way. More than the controls, it more feels like the stages themselves needed to be better tuned around certain jump distances. Outside of Bubsy's ball form, his regular form is like a perfect 10/10. He controls excellently. It all feels very tight and well tuned. I never once had an issue controlling Bubsy on foot. Whenever I fell off a platform, I never felt the need to blame the controls. It was always my own fault, which is the gold standard for controls that you'd want from any game. Controlling Bubsy is a blast, and that's just by default. Some of the upgrades he gets can make the experience even better still. My biggest gripe is that I wish the stages were a bit more centered around Bubsy in his regular form rather than his ball form, because he's so much fun to play just as he is. Narratively, there isn't much of a story here, however, this is the most charming Bubsy has ever been. He talks a lot as you play (and it's not annoying). The characters also have some voice acting in scenes, and when it's there, it does hit. Most of it is text though, that of which is humorous, self aware, and at times, fourth wall breaking. None of the humor will compel side splitting laughs, but some of it is worth a chuckle, and at the very least, it will put smiles on faces. This game also embraces it's past using humor, which is excellent fan service. However, daisy chaining a previous point onto all of this, because the game is short, these moments feel as though they didn't get enough stage time. The 3 bosses range from easy to normal in this game, with creative, yet fairly simple, attack patterns. They're basically a three hit kind of deal, where they do a bunch of stuff you have to avoid before they present a hit opportunity. The fights are fine, however, the boss designs themselves did feel a bit uninspired to me. I didn't even know that I was fighting the final boss until after I beat him and the game ended. Combined with how short the game is, that'll deflate you like a sad balloon, mostly because otherwise, the game is really fun. It's like a joy ride that ends too soon. So, is this game bad? Not at all, but it does have flaws, This game lands in the realm of "it's good, but could have better." There's a fairly heavy emphasis on Bubsy being in ball mode, which is fun, but gears the stage designs toward being more wide and open. I would've liked to have seen more tightly packed stages that allowed Busby to engage in more platforming obstacles, especially being that he's so fun to control. Seriously, the devs did such a great job sharpening the way Bubsy handles that it's like you're controlling him with your mind. Still though, even for what this is, it's very fun, charming, but too short for its sweetness. All things considered, if I were to put a number on this game, it would be a 7/10. My recommendation; Unless you LOOOVE Bubsy (like I do) wait for a sale. $19.99 feels a bit steep for this. It's definitely not a bad game, but it's content to price ratio weighs it down. There's definitely fun to be had here, but not enough of it to warrant its current price tag. Although I do realize that this isn't a glowing review, I'd still like to add that I'm pleased to see the Busby IP in such capable hands. The dev is talented. It shows within this game. I suspect that a limited indie budget may have been what weighed this title down. With a bit more direction and a bigger budget, I think this would have been an easy 9/10. You can feel the potential for that as you play. The skeleton is there, it just needed more meat on the bones. I'd personally be all for a DLC later on down the line.

I opened the settings and heard Bubsy roasting tank controls Already a 10/10 game More seriously, what an awesome redemption arc. The moveset is fluid and feels really good, performances and optimizations are great and the level design (while still big as Bubsy 3D) feels more polished and linear. I never knew I needed Bubsy in my life, but glad I need him now.
