Cabernet, released in the first quarter of 2025, is a good vampire game. It's also a good game on its own right for the most part, but you'd be surprised at the sorry state of interactive vampire media we have. So, we are not strangers to vampires in videogames as enemies, as concepts, as aesthetics... But for the most part, unless your first name is Vampire, your middle name is The Masquerade, and your last name is Bloodlines or Redemption, chances are that the blood sucking ailment is included in a game in the most shallows of ways. Okay, fine, V Rising is fun. Anyway, Cabernet is a character focused narrative RPG about Liza, a young woman of science that has recently died. The problem is that Liza doesn't stay dead, she rises from her grave cold and confused, and is promptly presented with a plethora of information about her new unlife as a vampire. Otherworldly deals, high society, the prospect of a never ending night, new rules, new tribulations, but the very same world that saw her grow into the woman she'd been before the bite (of '87). Because Liza had a previous life, and it didn't disappear when she changed. Will she remain the same person she was becoming? Will this change reflect not only on her body but also her very core? That's for us as the players to explore through her interactions with others and the many choices that branch into the sort of consequences that make me get the popcorn bucket out. Things can get quite messy, which I appreciate A LOT. Party for Introverts has presented us with the ideal ludonarrative harmony regarding the vampire myth, how it can be a metaphor for many of our faults as humans, our addictions, how they reflect on our views not only of others but of ourselves and our own mortality, and how that translates into a product that we interact with. Liza is allowed, here and there, to be both judge, jury and executioner in her new position, the game doesn't shy away from letting you become a monster of the night. You only get so many hours in a night, and only so much blood to sustain you. Maybe you'll assist the good doctor and continue with your own research, maybe you'll take advantage of "lesser" beings, maybe you'll refuse human blood, or maybe you'll suck them dry. And maybe, just maybe, you'll fall in love. Or maybe you'll trap one, two, or three humans under your thrall to become your own personal blood bags after causing a divorce, stealing a family's entire savings and torment an artist into creating the most beautiful piece of writing they've ever created and them gaslight them into thinking they're not enough, that they need you, that you're their everything. Their everything. Everything. And also laugh at the poor. The writing remains consistent, and the consequences of all those choices that you might make come back to haunt you. You can, of course, hunt those consequences back. It's all very gothic in feeling and vibes, and does carry the immersive sensations that Le Fanu and Stoker once left us with. Okay, so enough of me gushing at the amount of narrative branching achieved by an indie game, made by an indie studio, that's also fully voice acted. Cabernet is not without its faults: there are collision issues with characters getting stuck in parts of the foreground, a couple of typos here and there and, most importantly, the quality of the sound mixing is not the best. You can hear the fact that lots of characters were recorded with very different equipment, quality wise, some sound more metallic than others, and others were in dire need of a mic muffler. Also, and this is a very niche issue, when playing on a docked Steam Deck, the game refused to detect my Bluetooth controller unless I went into Steam's overlay's controller input config, changed it to keyboard and mouse, and then changed it back to controller. Regarding the romance options, eh, romance overall isn't Cabernet's strongest part. The build up is rife with different paths to take, and is much better than the relationship itself, but I would frame it as those relationships serving the purpose of giving us the opportunity to let Liza remain good, or take advantage of the power she's gained over these individuals. Still, it needs to be recognized that you won't find BioWare levels of romantic entanglements here. Small in scope, big in heart. Technically limited, expertly written. An easy recommendation for those with vampiric inclinations, lovers of elaborate visual novels and pretty much anyone that would appreciate a good, medium sized, RPG with lots of choices to make. In my opinion, Cabernet is a game which deserves more recognition. It has a great storyline and the choice you make can affect a lot of the in-game dialogue with various characters. I can’t pretend that your choice will perfectly change the main quest. Certain events can’t be changed or avoid. However, you are offered many choices which affect the future of certain characters and the ending you will get. There is a nice selection of optional quests available to you. The game plays very well with a Switch Nintendo Pro Controller, but it’s not working with a dualsense PS5 controller. As an achievement hunter, I had lot a fun to replay the game to see how my choices offer a various variety of changes within the story. The scenario is well written and voice actors are really good. It’s also got a really good soundtrack which fits well with the game ambience. I had the music ‘Drinks are on me’ in my head for days after playing this game. I also found that certain in- game mechanics were very interesting. For example, you can raise both your morality and nihilism (good/evil) in one playthough, because you can choose one option among the two without lowering the amount of point in the other category. Which means the more point you have in both categories will unlock more in-game choice for you. Another thing I did like is, unless its dawn in the game, (or currently in a timed event or near the last chapter) the time of the night doesn’t change unless you use an action point. Certain actions use an action point and other don’t. It gives you the leisure to explore the town at your own pace to find collectibles in certain chapters. So, it’s possible to return to your house to save without worrying that the time pass, because the time of the night only progresses when you use an action point (in most chapters). Sadly, there is only three save slot in this game, and you can get a lot of bugs which force you to reload. Luckily, there is an auto save feature with the manual save. I recommend to save often and use all the save slot available to you. You also have the choice to refill your blood meter in the manner you prefer. Feeding on rabbit, on people or drinking only cabernet, are the choices you can make after a certain chapter. There is benefice and consequence to overfeed in this game. You also have the choice to romance certain character. If you love vampires and narrative games, you will surely love Cabernet. In overall, + Good story + Good soundtrack and voice acting + Good variety of choices within the linear main story quests + Nice selection of optional quests - Bugs which force to reload - Not enough save slot - Don’t work well with a Dualsense PS5 controller - Can’t romance Hussar Edit: Thank you for adding more in game save slot :)

This will be the first longer written review I have ever left on a game, but for Cabernet, I feel genuinely compelled. I came to this game after the launch of Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, which, a lot of you know, hasn't been really up to expectations. It's a wide pool that's very shallow. Cabernet is not that. It's an arguably smaller pool, but it goes incredibly deep. The art style is gorgeous, the VA and music is astounding, and the story genuinely pulls you in at every moment. It has a few hiccups, and admittedly I'm coming in to the game late, so I imagine they fixed some bugs prior. There's still a few issues in that department; but unlike VTM:Bloodlines 2, where I'm struggling to want to continue the story through what feels like chore after chore - Cabernet is like a book I couldn't put down until I was finished. The story is yours, it draws you in, and the game is clever and funny at times, and at other times, the characters and their stories make you want to cry. The relationships Liza forms are genuinely touching, and the romance is done incredibly well. My biggest issue with Cabernet? That it ended. I didn't want to say good bye to Liza, and naturally, I'm already on another playthrough to try a different path and style. This game is worth every rose it is given.

TL;DR: It's an nice indie Pentiment-like about vampires in a fictional setting clearly based on late 19th century pre-revolutionary Russia. No but seriously, Cabernet is a well written, fully voiced narrative RPG-lite (there's no combat and very little action) that has something to say if you're willing to listen, and unlike most games nowadays, it understands nuance and shades of gray. It's also just about the right length (could be a bit shorter, see below). Thumbs up overall because I think this is a good game, but not without issues, and I can't recommend it to everyone. POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW [*]Some side quests just end abruptly with no warning or proper resolution [*]No parity of content between "good" and "evil" playthroughs: there's clearly a single "proper" ending, everything else is basically bad ends and cuts you short (but hey, you forgave BG3 in 1.0 for that very sin). If you don't agree with what the authors actually view as a "good" ending, you'll be disappointed and maybe even outright angry with the game. [*]The whole middle part of the story is you running around town doing side-quests waiting for main plot to advance, and you're given way too much time to do stuff, there's not enough urgency to your tasks. [*]There's a pretty drastic tonal shift in the last couple of chapters (although not without foreshadowing) that, again, won't be to everyone's liking [*]Actual gameplay, as in walking around, doing stuff and using your vampire abilities, can feel quite clunky and unpolished. Think abilities failing to activate, interactions that can only be activated from a specific angle, etc. [*]There are numerous reports about the game being very buggy (including progression blockers) at launch. For what it's worth, I started playing on patch 1.0.13 and didn't run into any gamebreaking issues. [*]I'm a Russian speaker who normally plays games in English. Cabernet doesn't even have a Russian text option (I can understand not having a dub, as that'd be very costly for little return). It even reads as if the text was translated from Russian to English at times (even though the overall text quality is high). Imagine Kingdom Come that had no Czech in it or Witcher with no Polish - that's kinda how it feels. Just stops me from recommending this game to some of my friends who could've enjoyed it but don't want to struggle through an English script full of Kolyas and Petyas and navs and rusalkas.
