I'm not tearful! It's just a brick in my eye, alright? Fine! I whimpered a little... What else did you expect from me? I cried over Grease's Sandy. It's a low bar already! And here we have the Hellenic pantheon stamped on a funfair for my indulgence, with a delicious musical treat inside! Such a treat it was! If Grace is the Muse, you're the musical maestro who is setting the stage, the tone, and the outcomes of the songs. You're the game equivalent of the Moirai (Charming, Kickass, and Clever) who weave through musical genres to set the characters' fates. The idea and dare are enough for me to recommend it despite its shortcomings. Still... Truth be told, I found none, except for the absence of the master of drama himself. There were a few Dionysus bombs here and there, but it wasn't enough to reach my full catharsis. Low bar, remember?
This game is one of a kind. Stray Gods is a choose your own musical 🤯 Choices and consequences, characters and romances, music and singing / voice acting are all excellent. I enjoyed it so much I started a second playthrough immediately after finishing the game - that's when I realized just how much the music changes depending on your choices. Not just the lyrics, but the melody, accompanying instruments, sometimes even genre. You effectively get an almost entirely new song! Every. Single. Time. I keep replaying it over and over again and I can't even choose which decision, which romance, and which version of each song I prefer. I wish I'd bought it sooner.
I wish this game was better than it is (the musical numbers are so so for the most part, the writing flipflops between okay and poor,), there is some missed potential here. However, it is not bad, and I want to support it so hopefully others (or even the same people) try again to do something similar.
In my opinion, the game succeeds much better at being an engaging visual novel/cyoa story than it does a musical, which is a real shame. The story is great, full of incredible characters and moments and an intriguing mystery plot. I just wish more of the gameplay had been centered around doing a bit more detective work than it was around the musical numbers. While an interesting concept in theory, the game kinda dropped the ball on the songwriting aspect, leaning largely into the "talk-singing" musical trope with little in the way of catchy hooks and choruses. Where this does improve, however, is in the DLC. The few songs that were there felt a lot more fun and engaging, and the choices in them felt more interesting without the colour-coded flavouring of the base game songs. Unfortunately, the DLC is incredibly short, with not even two hours of gameplay, which makes it hard to truly recommend. In short, I think this game is worth it on a sale, and bundled with the DLC. If you're there for the musical aspect, you may be disappointed, but if you just want a fun, well-executed story with romance and memorable characters, you'll get that in spades.
