Call of the Wild: The Angler™ is an ambitious attempt to blend the serene pastime of fishing with the immersive, open-world exploration style familiar to fans of hunting sims. Developed by Expansive Worlds, known for their work on theHunter: Call of the Wild, this fishing-focused counterpart aims to deliver both a relaxing and rewarding angling experience set against the backdrop of sprawling natural environments. It’s a game that tries to be both a detailed fishing simulator and a wide-open outdoor adventure, and while it achieves a lot in terms of atmosphere and scale, it occasionally struggles to find perfect balance between realism and accessibility. At its core, The Angler is a fishing game that invites you to explore large, beautifully rendered environments—from tranquil mountain lakes to winding rivers and scenic woodland trails. You can hike, drive, or even take boats across the map to find the best fishing spots, giving the game an exploration angle that feels almost as important as the fishing itself. This sense of freedom and immersion is one of the game’s greatest strengths. Unlike many static fishing games, The Angler encourages movement, discovery, and experimentation, which makes the act of fishing feel like part of a broader outdoor experience rather than a confined minigame. The actual fishing mechanics are a mix of simulation and accessibility. Casting, reeling, and battling fish all require timing and technique, but they’re not overly complicated, making the game approachable to newcomers without alienating more seasoned anglers. Rods, reels, and bait types are customizable and cater to different fish species, giving the game a satisfying layer of depth. Catching a rare or particularly large fish after stalking the right location or experimenting with bait feels genuinely rewarding. That said, the physics and fish behavior sometimes feel inconsistent, with odd moments where fish animation or line tension doesn’t behave quite as expected. These hiccups can pull you out of the immersion, though they are more technical annoyances than game-breaking flaws. One of the more notable aspects of Call of the Wild: The Angler is its multiplayer functionality. You can fish alongside friends or strangers in a shared world, which adds a social element that few fishing games offer. Cooperative play doesn’t fundamentally change the core mechanics, but it allows for casual, relaxing sessions where you can chat, explore, and compete to catch the biggest fish. The game supports drop-in/drop-out play, and the world feels alive when others are around, especially when you all stumble upon a hot fishing spot or rare species. Visually, the game shines with lush natural environments and dynamic lighting that shifts with the time of day. Watching the sun rise over a misty lake or paddling through calm waters at sunset creates a sense of peace and immersion that’s hard to match. The sound design further enhances this atmosphere, with ambient bird calls, gentle wind, and splashing water pulling you deeper into the experience. The game truly captures the meditative quality of being outdoors, and it’s easy to lose hours simply wandering and casting lines—even without a clear objective. That said, the game launched with a few technical shortcomings. Early versions of The Angler were criticized for bugs, performance issues, and limited content variety. While the developers have since released several updates and patches to improve stability and add features, some of those initial rough edges still linger. The user interface, while functional, can feel clunky at times, especially when managing gear or tracking objectives. Additionally, progression can feel slow or unbalanced in spots, particularly when it comes to unlocking new gear or traveling long distances without fast travel conveniences. In conclusion, Call of the Wild: The Angler™ delivers a unique and surprisingly expansive fishing experience that combines thoughtful mechanics with a stunning open world. It offers both the depth of a fishing simulator and the beauty of an outdoor adventure game, making it a great option for those seeking a more relaxed and scenic gaming experience. While it’s not without its flaws—particularly in technical areas—the overall package is compelling and continues to improve with developer support. For players who enjoy tranquil exploration and the satisfaction of landing the perfect catch, The Angler provides a satisfying and memorable digital escape into the wild. Rating: 7/10

Everything But the Mosquitoes I've gotten so used to the ambient sounds of the water when the game loads that I feel like I'm really on the water. It is an immersive fishing sim that gives you all the tools of the hobby and sets you loose on wide open-world reserves to do as you please. Or, you can jump into the wide array of missions available. I bought this game back at release, and drifted away after the first 85 hours because of irl. (Irl can be a pain sometimes for most everybody. That's why sims are so popular.) But, a couple of weeks ago I snagged the new reserves in South Africa and Japan only to find that the game had come into its own, so to speak. I really love the Japan reserve, but after exploring it all and fishing a bit, I found myself heading back over to the American reserve with a renewed enjoyment. The game plays a lot better than at release. Though I can't put my finger on it, there is something more alluring about the game now. Anyways, I've added more gear and cosmetic dlcs, as well as the latest reserves, after ditching a lot of junk out of my Steam inventory items for the market cash. When you have to have it now nobody likes waiting around. At the moment I find myself waiting for the game install on my laptop so I can play it on the go, and not just on my desktop. It is that addictive. I won't go into all the details because I know you will discover them yourself. This is well worth a lot of gaming hours. I had already played thehunter: Call of the Wild for more than twelve hundred hours before jumping into the Angler. That is a game that I will never get tired of playing. I only wish the water was more interactive. That's not only what the devs have done in the Angler, but they've made a better product, in my opinion. I guess they've upped the graphics and mechanics. It makes you realize all the new things that could be improved in the Hunter COTW with a new iteration in coming years. As for improving the Angler, I would love to have depth information available on the map level for the rivers and lakes. It just makes sense. It almost feels like an oversight. Depth is a part of fishing since bodies of water are 3D. As a wishlist, It would be great if they add more American reserves. They say the base reserve was modeled on Yellowstone area. I think they could add reserves centered around water regions: like the Great Lakes, the Gulf Coast , New England/Atlantic, and Alaska/Pacific Coast. I would also like to see reserves based in Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and the South China Seas, to name a few. They just improved the customization feature to show hair under the hat with the latest update. That is much better, as being bald under my hat was no more pleasant for me as a woman than it would be for a man. That still needs a bit of work in my opinion, as its a bit low quality. Other than that, most everything looks good. One of the rivers in Spain has some splitting errors. (On that King's Path mission.) Whether you are a fishing pro, or you're an armchair angler who wants to learn more about the fish and the gear; you can kick back, cast in your line and enjoy some virtual fishing while immersing yourself in the wiki, or grab a jeep and a boat to join up with friends. There is so much to enjoy here.

Based on the number of negative reviews and the overall of mixed, I felt like I needed to write a review. If you think you are getting something other than a fishing simulator in an open world you are incorrect. However, if you are looking for a game to just enjoy the beautiful maps with some fishing involved you are right on the money. I was torn whether or not to get this game, I have the Hunter, but play it very limited. This game offers an easier 'get in' experience and is constantly rewarding. If you are unable to get some bites try changing your bait/hook/fishing method and you will probably have better luck. With the exception of a few instances I have never walked/drove away from an area because I was unable to catch anything. Trying to catch specific types of fish will require some more technique and that is where the learning curve comes in and the fun really starts.

Remove the damn netting animations or at least having to press an extra button to catch a small fish. EDIT: There's now an option to disable the netting animations entirely.
