TL;DR: It takes everything that made the old Men of War games great, fixes the jank, and turns the realism up to eleven. It’s brutal, it’s chaotic, and it’s the most fun I’ve had in a strategy game in years. Worth every single penny. If you’re a history nerd, a strategy fan, or just someone who loves watching physics-based destruction, stop scrolling and just buy this game. Seriously. Gates of Hell: Ostfront is easily the best WWII RTS on the market right now, and honestly, nothing else even comes close. Here is why this game is an absolute masterpiece IMO: 1. The RTS / Third-Person Hybrid is Crack The coolest thing about this game is how it lets you switch perspectives on the fly. One second you’re playing a traditional top-down RTS, managing a massive front line and positioning your squads. The next second, you can press 'E' and take direct, third-person control of a single soldier or a tank crew. There is nothing quite like the rush of manually aiming a Tiger tank's 88mm gun, lining up a shot through a bush, and sniping a hidden enemy anti-tank gun from a kilometer away. The battlefields are massive, completely open sandboxes—no invisible walls or scripted lanes. If a building is blocking your line of sight, you can literally just level it with artillery. 2. The Detail and Realism is Borderline Obsessive Forget arcade-style "health bars." This game uses a ridiculously deep component-based damage model. If you shoot a tank, the game calculates armor thickness, angle, and ballistics. Your shot might ricochet harmlessly, blow off a track, jam the turret, or penetrate and take out the driver. The attention to historical detail is insane. Every soldier has an individual inventory. They run out of ammo, they can pick up enemy weapons, and you can even have them scavenge tools to repair disabled tanks on the field. It’s gritty, stressful, and incredibly rewarding. 3. The Modding Scene is Legendary The base game has tons of content, but the Steam Workshop community takes it to a whole new level. The game is incredibly modular, meaning mods run smoothly and add hundreds of hours of extra life. Want total historical overhauls, massive new community campaigns, or modern-era conversions? It’s all there.
this game made me realize how stupid I've been for spending 800 hrs on Company of Heroes 2, desperately trying to "patch" the game with "realism" mod such as Wikinger n Spearhead, when this exist all along. If I'm able to bear CoH 2 for 800 hours, this would probably in the future reach 1000+ hrs if life don't get on the way (which it most probably would, unfortunately). It's that good.
