This game is incredible. Also this game is a criminal offense against my blood pressure. 1. A man told me to meet him “beneath the city,” as he has something important to tell me, so naturally I spend 45 minutes searching prisons and dungeons before discovering a random trapdoor hidden behind a cabbage crate in Saint John’s. Then that same man tried to murder me in a tunnel for lols. 2. Then another Captain hunted me across the Caribbean in a British ship despite me ALSO sailing under the British flag. Had to sink him and piss the Britain off. I smoothe over the straining relationship with Britain, then the government asked me to recover a stolen British ship, but attacking the stolen British ship made Britain angry again because apparently maritime law in this game was written by drunken ruggamuffins. 3. Then I find the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, and spend hours to find 3 totems based on vague hints given to me by an aztec dude named after Montezuma, so that I can cross the flaming bridge into the city. Once inside, I find out that I need 10 more totems to proceed further, but this time the game doesn't even give you hints on where they are. I leave never to return, for my day is ruined. 4. I go back to the sandbox experience, doing repeatable quests for money while trying not to be bankrupt by my own crew that can't even hit enemy ship with broadside. They are the worst crew I've ever had a misfortune to work with, and I can't even afford rum to keep them happy, and I barely have money for food. Medication is a luxury at this point. They start dying from disease and my Doctor is just chilling cuz I had no medications on my ship. They mutiny against me for not giving them rum and healthcare. I quench the mutiny, BARELY, and continue sailing only to be attacked by 3 pirate ships just off the coast of Barbados and relative safety of Bridgetown. 5. For some reason the Dutch really hate me, and every time they see me sailing, they just BEELINE towards me with Battle Caravels, Fluyts, Barques and Heavy Galleons. I had a LUGGER, I'm not even a threat, I don't carry any cargo, I'm poorer than the Church mouse, they would just waste ammo on me. They stand to gain nothing, it's just pure love for the game to make me miserable. The game is BRUTAL. Absolutely BRUTAL. And I love it, wouldn't have it any other way. 8/10 (Would be 10/10 if the game didn't randomly crash from time to time).
Don't compare it with games made by larger companies. It is obviously a small team title. But look past the shortcomings to see the gem. Hoping for more updates. EDIT: AMAZING PROGRESS SO FAR. Becoming the essential pirate experience out there, so much new content, updates and quality of life improvements and don't get me started on the ships , the details and mechanisms. The vegetation could do with some breeze effect and wind rustling, as otherwise towns seem very static without. Perhaps some fish at the beaches to add life to the land, and sea.
This game is rough, clunky, janky, unforgiving, and frustrating at times. If you're looking for a modern, smooth-sailing gaming experience look elsewhere. However, if you're willing to overlook its flaws, and know what you are signing up with this game, it can hook you into a rewarding pirate adventure sandbox for many hours, where you get to create your own voyage through Caribbean. No one said a pirate's life is easy.
BEWARE!!!!!! This game is extremely addictive. The core gameplay loop is simple. The progression is rewarding. Overall, 8/10. Some polish is still needed, and some quests are VERY frustrating. But then again, it is worth it. Straight up one of the best if not THE best pirate sim there is. So get your beverage of choice and find out whether or not the pirate life is for you.
