It seems that most of the negative reviews revolve around the fact that this is not a true Carmageddon game. I would love to have a modern game made with the same formula as Carmageddon 2 so, while that is a legitimate complaint, and one which I don't disagree with, I also don't feel it deserves the 57% rating it's currently sitting at. Faithful follow-up or not, if you can get past that, I think it's a good game. The combat is fun and the effects are well designed. Some of the vehicles drive like bathtubs, but that's what I'd expect when you take a normal-ish car and strap on a bunch of armor plating and stuff. Kind of reminds me of driving a Humvee, so maybe my review is somewhat blinded by nostalgia in that regards. I got used to it after a few runs. If you're driving a vehicle that has in the description "tends to oversteer", go light on the stick or choose a different car. Again, legitimate complaint, but one which I don't feel ruins the game as many other reviewers seem to think. Another thing I have to give it points for is that it seems very well optimized for handhelds. I'm mostly playing this at work on my Rog XB Ally X, and it runs beautifully with most settings maxed out.

> Good game tbh, maybe rename it to Death Race rather than Carmageddon. > Fix the handling and physics issues, maybe even a potential multiplayer mode in later updates? > Improve on the story mode, rather than the comic book cutscenes. > Create character backgrounds for the opponents and more cars. > More bosses too, like the returning Mother Trucker or Stella Stunna. > Add more game modes such as Lap Knockout (Eliminator), Number of Wrecks in a time limit, or Sprint Races (with an indicator to determine the remaining distance or progress until the finish line). *Maybe add OG Hawk R perhaps? In the form of an Aston Martin Vulcan or any other supercar, but no spolier.

As a longtime fan of the Carmageddon series, I have a message for the skeptics: judge the game for what it actually is, rather than what it isn't. There’s a vocal group of purists acting as if this title personally came over and thrashed their nostalgic memories of a niche franchise that once grabbed headlines 30 years ago. The reality is that this isn't a direct sequel, a reboot, or a replacement for the classic titles—and it never claimed to be. It’s a spin-off. And a damn good one, too. Once you stop punishing the developers for changing the formula, you find a fantastic car-combat game that successfully blends the brand's DNA with fresh mechanics for the racing genre. I love the original games, but let’s be honest: their appeal is an acquired taste. While the racing was straightforward, the "destroy all racers" and especially "kill all pedestrians" win conditions could become a tedious slog. I'm sorry, but that is the honest truth. The series has a flow problem. That's why this title cuts that fat to keep the high-octane carnage constant. While the open-ended maps are gone, they’ve been replaced by well-crafted linear circuits. These tracks feel distinctly "Carmageddon," taking you through: [*]Ruined city streets and storm drain systems [*]Through buildings! [*]Half-sunken cargo ships and power plants [*]Plane graveyards and winding forest roads [*]and that's just a few because I've been dying before the 3rd boss... The Sidebash—which I call the "f**k you button"—is first permanent upgrade the game forces you to equip. And it is incredibly satisfying. The collisions feel heavy and visceral. Just like the classics, there is no "player advantage" here; the AI and police are just as dangerous to themselves as they are to you. You’ll see the same glorious buffoonery as opponents slam each other into walls, go flying off sidewalls, and they can spin you out just as easily as you can them. And speaking of dangers, the inclusion of zombies isn't just a "safe" play to avoid the censorship that plagued the series. Here, they serve a mechanical purpose. Different variants act as tactical tools and hazards to avoid: [*]Boomer Zombies: Puss zombies that explode and do massive damage. [*]Mortar Plants (Idk if that's their actual name): Giant fauna that litter the map with bombs. [*]Siren: A crazy, indescribable anomaly that stuns drivers. [*]Residuum: Leftovers of organic matter from the zombies such as droppable pods, sticky stops, pod bombs, etc. [*]if there is more, I haven't seen it but I haven't gotten that far in my current runs. While weapons provide an assist, your best tool remains the impact. The new dedicated slam button (which doubles as an evade) removes the frustration of having to line up the "perfect" assault, keeping the flow of combat fast. Each weapon type has their utility but your choices in perks and loadouts is what can make or break a run. Your top priority is build synergy; making sure your perks and your loadout compliment each other perfectly. The loop is tight and follows a classic roguelite structure: Proceduralization: Events, reward, reward conditions, and tracks are fully randomized. Select: Pick a car with a preset build. Compete: Complete events to earn currency for perks, upgrades and weapons. Progress: Fight bosses and tackle endurance rounds to reach the next sector, earning you bonus slots to add more perks and upgrades upping the ante. Strategy: Picking a route best suits your goals. For example: Do you take on lower pay or riskier runs for a chance at a loot drop that has a 1 in 6 chance of taking anyway anything you earned, or do you prioritize maxing income before the next upgrade shop? Die/Reset: Use your earnings to unlock better gear, starting perks, new shop items and vehicles for the next run. This game isn't Carmageddon in the traditional sense, but that doesn't make it not Carmageddon. It has the feel, the sound, the look, the grit, the music with newfound non-stop action and a roguelite foundation (which is practically alien to racing games as a genre). My only genuine complaint is the handling. The cars are too twitchy at low speeds and lose responsiveness at high speeds. It feels less like natural momentum and more like a "switch" in the code that kills your turning radius once you hit a certain MPH. However, if you can get past the handling quirks, you’ll find a great combat racer that wears its branding on its sleeve. It's important to understand that this is very much a roguelite. You do runs consisting of branching path races with boss battles after a certain number of races, and there are upgradable components (guns, speed, etc.) during the runs and also permanent upgrades done outside of runs. Because of this, your car stinks at first. Slow, sludgy, and weak. This is the gamble they took in this game by making a driving game a roguelite and handing you a doodoo car at the start. Each new car you unlock is a little better at something or other, but I suggest you make a beeline to unlock the SQR-NE55, which I think is a level 4 or 5 car (out of 10?). THAT car handles exactly like you're expecting cars to handle in a non-roguelite racing game. I beat the game with it, also placing 1st in every race along the way. The game goes from WTF hard to almost a little too easy once you upgrade. But that's a roguelite. The boss battles are a lot of fun. I think there are three rotating ones and my favorite is instead of a race it's you vs. a big 'ol boss truck, his half-sized main side kick, and a bunch of little protector cars, running however many laps you need in 5 minutes until you destroy him. Or you can destroy everyone, but you need to destroy the big guy in 5. The end boss battle is cool too but I'm not going to spoil it. Holding down on D-pad to respawn is key once or twice a race. Since this is primarily a car combat game and everyone is firing at you along with there being a lot of obstacles in the road, you're going to spin out a fair amount and it takes forever to make a multi-point turn to drive forward again. Just respawn. Having beaten the game I'd really like to see some other modes now, like to be able to choose the track, race type, and amount of enemies. Or maybe a daily challenge with leaderboards, some reason to want to come back and play it more often. The game is pretty good, maybe not worth the price right now if you're not an arcade racer junkie like myself, but with some post-launch refinements to the gameplay this could end up being a nice one. I'd bet money they're going to make the starting car better, because apparently people can see things like "roguelite" and a mile long list of car upgrades and still think the driving is just bad while being oblivious to what type of game they're playing.

Ok, after 3 hours of playtime. I can say that I do recommend it. However, this is not going to be for everyone, and its price is eye watering, given what it contains and restrains....but hear me out. When I jumped in I was disappointed, none of the original characters, no customisation and no multiplayer or splitscreen...but then I dug deeper. When you load in, you might be disappointed by the lack of options, but the gameplay delivers exactly what is promised. Power ups, environmental kills and AI that can really mess up your chances to get first place. Not to mention the weapons that each vehicle is equipped with. Machine guns, rocket launchers, saw off shotguns, lasers, railguns and more. The only way to win is to fight dirty, but you slip up, mistime, or even get cocky...kiss your chances goodbye. You might walk away with a few wins as you rise up the ranks, but that leads to the next race where your cars damage remains into the next track. Think of it as a Wreck fest fever dream with someone blaring heavy metal music in your ear during a Mad Max marathon. As you progress through the races you notice that the AI and even the tracks become harder to navigate, even though you have been getting your 1st, 2nd and 3rd places...these all lead you to the main antagonists on the manslaughterfield, the bosses. Each one is determined to ruin your day with explosives, flamethrowers and a dirty side swiping mind...just the way it should be. You have a certain amount of time to take him out before it takes you out. You'll drift, shoot, explode and pick everything you can alive...but then the timer reaches zero and GAME OVER! WHAT?! THATS BULLS***! Ok ill just respond and NOPE! This is a Roguelite Arcade Vehicular Combat Game. Everytime you die, no matter where you are, you restart from the start...but with all the knowledge and credits to chsnge the outcome. Even better than that though there might be a not as many levels as you think they would have it is only randomly generated and each layout has been changed so it never feels like the same races. But better than that is where its concept of customising comes in. Using bitcoins (no not that bitcoin) you have the ability to purchase new upgrades in the shop, new weapons, new armor variants, new power ups, and even new cars for a different way to play. Maybe the heavier truck isnt your speed...how about a wildcard that randomly changes the cars abilities each time a new race starts. The possibilities are endless. I am on my 7th playthrough and I still haven't beaten it! That should shoe you replayablity, you will spend hours trying to unlock and find the best combination that works for you. And when you hit that accelerator you feel like a God of Destruction! Zombies get you more points to upgrade and csn be used to slow your opponents down as well environmental kills and distractions, but if you arent lucky you could be caught in the crossfire. But trust when I say, that when that 10 second timer begins to tick down and you have to think on your feet about getting that repair kit, with an onslaught of enemies behind you, rockets and bullets flying...you hit that repair point and it fixes about 10% of your car...you feel that same adrenaline rush everytime. Side note: its price is hard to swallow. At 50 USD (70 AUD) it is a lot to pay for something that feels like its more in the $25 range. So my only suggestion, wait till it goes on sale. 34 big things did an amazing job and doesnt feel like a shell of a Product, there is genuine care, honor and fun in it, but that price...is not a good way to show it. This isn't the Carmegeddon we know and grew up with. This isn't about getting to the finish, detroying all opponents or even killing all pedestrians...its more than that. Its a faster paced, adrenaline shredding, vehicllular combat arcade racer that forces your foot on the gas and wont stop till you are a splatter on the pavement. Then reload and do it again! I said to myself, oh this is garbage and will be returning it before the 2 hours...but 30 mins in...I felt this level of love I haven't felt since the Twisted Metal and Burnout days with splashes of Blur mixed in. If you are looking for a Carmegeddon game like the original, pick up Max Damage...but if you are willing to try a new era of car combat, with pure metal on metal, blood soaked viscera then look no further! This is one ride you will never forget.
