Randomly found this game on the main page of store, saw it was first person horror and figured "Why not, lets buy it, it's dirt cheap anyways". Hoooooooooooooly smokes, this game is shockingly awesome and fun! Seriously, one of the best indie games (and honestly games in general) I've ever played! Yeah, right from entering the mansion, it's clearly mainly Resident Evil inspired, and bunch of references from other games and movies too, but it still manages to be its own thing. I haven't got a better deal since... well, maybe Orange Box? For 5 (FIVE), yes, 5 (FIVE) fu***** euros, you get more content and fun than most AAA games for the full price of 60-90€. You get: - Great campaign with 3 levels (mansion level alone is worth 5€), Normal and Hard difficulty. - Dungeon Escape mode, you go through 10 randomized floors filled with enemies and you need to escape. - Horde mode, waves of enemies and survive as long as you can. - Randomizer, campaign where everything is random, Normal and Hard difficulty. - Bunch of achievements of completing game on different methods (no save, no heal, no sprint etc), which incentivises replays. Visually it's perfect for what it aims, gameplay is fun, enemies are varied and have their own challenges. It reminded me a lot of Dark Souls, where you need to time your attacks and reloads, because when you reload, ittttttttttt isssssssssss slooooooooooow and you mooooooooove slooooooooooow so you really need to pay attention to enemy attacks if you want to survive. There are some creepy moments too. And all of this is packed in not 200gb, not 100gb, not 50gb, not 10gb, not 5gb, not even 1gb, but 300 MEGABYTES!!! The only thing that I wish was added is the voice acting. There's no voice acting but cartoonish sounds that immitate speech sorta. But I guess it was intentional to not make game super serious. And yeah, the ending is lame and generic horror trope. Overall, I had a blast and great time with this game, it's worth A LOT more!
Just plain good old survival horror. What you see is what you get here! Explore the mansion, shoot the monsters, find the puzzle pieces, don't waste your ammo. There is just enough story to get you there and chased by zombies - by which I mean, there is almost no story, which is perfect. Nothing here will change your life, but it's all done well and with charm. Everything feels right and there are no annoyances or mistakes in the design. Only $5 and frequently goes on sale. I paid $2.50 and got 2½ hours of spooky fun out of it, not counting the extra game modes that unlock after the main story. Play it.
Nightmare of Decay is one of those games where you can immediately tell the developer genuinely cared about what they were making. Every part of the game feels thoughtfully designed, and the attention to detail is impressive. The visuals perfectly match the game's atmosphere, and every weapon feels satisfying to use. Despite being short, it never feels rushed. Honestly, I have a hard time finding anything to criticize. Nightmare of Decay has clear inspirations from games like Silent Hill and especially Resident Evil. Even making references to iconic characters/moments from those franchises. It's fun, a little scary, challenging, pushes you to conserve your health and ammo just like an RE game, the puzzles are satisfying to complete, and it has a bit of humour sprinkled throughout it too. The story is more of a background element here and so the best reason to play the game is for its survival horror gameplay. 7.5/10.
One of the best indie games I’ve ever bought. It’s truly a love letter to classic survival horror games like Resident Evil. If you’ve played a lot of the old classic titles, you will find plenty of easter eggs and subtle references hidden throughout. It’s also short and sweet, which is exactly how I prefer my survival horror games
