As someone who has spent countless hours with Banished, I've spent years searching for a game that could recreate that same feeling. I've played many colony builders, and while some are excellent games, they always felt like they were trying to be something different. Then I found Ostriv. This isn't just another city builder. It feels like the spiritual successor I've been looking for. If you're expecting a fast-paced colony builder, this may not be for you. But if you enjoy taking your time, watching a settlement slowly become a believable village, and solving problems through careful planning rather than rushing expansion, Ostriv is a masterpiece. As a Banished fan, I can honestly say this is the closest I've ever come to experiencing that magic again. Highly recommended.

One of the best colony builders I've played. I especially love the freedom you have, designing the plot and building shapes. The game feels like a more modern, more advanced Banished.

Honestly the best city-builder I've ever played! Neither too hard or too easy but needing a little time to figure it out, its economy system works great, and the villagers' ai is smart enough to avoid dumb frustrations to the player. The setting add a very pleasant and charming vibe greatly helped by beautiful graphics! I definitely recommend Ostriv!

It's just a better, cheaper, more frequently updated version of Manor lords or Farthest Frontier with more content, by a solo dev who keeps pushing regular updates even when living in a warzone gets in the way. Of all games I've seen called a proper sequel/innovator to banished, this is currently the definitive successor. All the selling points and things I enjoy in similar games are done better here: you get to watch your people act out every stage of the building process in more detail than ML, roads are created dynamically, you have individual family wealth not just immediately all pooled in some kind of "town wealth". If you want a treasury you have to balance wages against taxes and market prices. Farming and animal husbandry is more in-depth than in most other games in the genre. No resource feels redundant, they all have a value or mechanic that differentiates them from another - you won't find 5 types of identical wheat with the exact same features that exist only to pad the advertised content. What's more, this is all working, unlike a lot of EA (and full release) games. And again, this is still in alpha at time of writing. Farthest Frontier and ML had less polished content and just less content during their beta! And unlike ML specifically (last hotfix was Jan at time of writing in Sep) this is actually getting frequent updates (TWENTY THREE hotfixes in that time). This has a lot of promise and a lot of reliability for an alpha, let alone an early access title on steam. It's a crime that this isn't more popular than some other titles in the genre. Plus they're planning to add cats and dogs.

Great city-builder game. A little more challenging and realistic than most, similar to Workers and Resources, but not quite as complex. There is a right way to do things, because that's how people survived back then, so realism is driving most of the game development and experience. I really enjoyed the experience and learning a bit more about life in the region and in that time.
