This is a really, really good game. One of those B tier games from a bygone era that experimented with things that games 20 years later would try to take credit for inventing. It is worth remembering though, it was B tier then, and is B tier now. Everything is "Good" but not "Great". Combat is fun but repetitive, moving feels painfully slow, The story is actually really die-hard interesting right up until the near-ending where it becomes more like "...Really? That's how you chose to explain everything?" Where Condemned shines is that they took something that most games take for granted, being the weapon selection, and made the WHOLE GAME all about it. You don't find keys, you need specific weapons to unlock/break down certain doors. Guns are rewards for finding secret areas but never overshadow melee weapons as your main implement (Though later they do in fact become what you use for a lot of the game). I cannot stress enough how cool this is, imagine if a game made healthkits interesting by making 12 normally mundane healing items into the game's weapons, keys, storytellers, secret rewards, and enemy difficulty telegraphs all at once. The weapons in condemned are shape-shifted into actual tools, as opposed to only being items to make enemies stop hurting you like most games do. Unfortunately, while melee is meaty, it's tame on the visual damage side compared to modern titles. The game has a very basic "Detective mode" with a suite of tools that are all fairly brainless to use, but still serve to give you little breaks from all of the slow-moving melee combat. The tools are fun, if finicky, to use. Unfortunately, like so many greats from this era, this game needs outside fixes to run in a way that won't make you want to carve out your own eyeballs. Fixes exist in the guide section. Should you try it? Is this game fun without nostalgia? I think so! I was actually gripped by it and played through it in a couple of sittings, I couldn't easily put it down. There was a thrill to it, the atmosphere and the lore, even just by the loading page blurbs, really made the whole world feel scary and lost. As an aside, with butchers creek out and stirring up nostalgia for this game, I want to make it known that remaking this game and its sequel for modern machines and releasing it as a remastered set will essentially create a money printer. Millennials are coming to the age where we covet terrible old games we played, not just the halos or the call of duty's, but the just-ok-but-innovative games like this one. Condemned is a cult classic waiting to happen. Find all of the bad games we rented from blockbuster as kids and start the magic remake engine if you want an easy path to making lots of money.

Great classic, unfortunately the game needs a file to help prevent the fps from dropping in game. The link is from a discussion page on steam that explains it better and will show you how to do it: https://steamcommunity.com/app/4720/discussions/0/3828665650634062132/

its been a while since i experienced a piece of art where pretty much every flaw just ended up making it more compelling to Me Specifically...super uncritically morally depraved in a way that perfectly reinforces the hyper-draining aesthetic, emotional, and mechanical experience. its easy for this kind of ultra-nihilism to just collapse into utter weightlessness, and while im not gonna pretend like u Feel The Loss Of Every Human Life You Take or whatever, the game is incredibly good at maintaining a deliciously and addictively pitch-dark weightiness. havent played a game since manhunt that has made all violence, whether committed by you or against u, this unpleasant. the narrative is mostly paper-thin but i am predictably generous to the parts where it breaks Best Practices as it slowly reveals its more outlandish genre leanings...there is even a source of comfort in the feeling that the world is Abandoned and being Corrupted, simply because it implies this is not its natural state. and its difficult to buy that the game gets worse as it goes on when its last level especially is one of the most satisfying mechanical climaxes ive experienced in a game in forever...kind of illustrative of lost potential as u imagine a whole game that made u learn more than one set of animations, but an extremely fun and challenging gauntlet all the same that proves that the simplicity of the game can still hold up to upscaling. if i could make video games, mashing up this set of mechanics with a manhunt spiritual successor would absolutely be a project idea id consider

Genuinely creepy game. This was one of the first I played when the XBOX360 came out. Even all these years later it still sticks out in my mind because of the erie atmosphere and jump in graphics compared to PS2 era stuff, especially the lighting and motion capture. The ambient sound and music is also really good (the main voice actor isnt that great though). I realized the gameplay is also pretty solid as I go through it again now. If you look at the recent Resident Evil games and stuff like Dying Light I think some of those took a cue from the story telling of first person horror like this. even The Last of Us has crazed tweakers and violent freaks similar to Condemned, as well as an animal-born type plague. This game did a lot of those things first but not as many people played it
