Condemned: Criminal Origins still holds up surprisingly well for a game released in 2006. The melee combat feels weighty, gunplay is solid and the limited ammo system adds real tension since you can’t just shoot your way through every encounter. The detective gadgets and investigation segments are clever and make you feel involved in solving the case. The enemy AI is smarter than expected...goons take cover when you have a gun and force you into close combat, which keeps fights challenging and unpredictable. The abandoned environments, eerie sound design and overall atmosphere are genuinely unsettling. The story starts strong as a grounded detective thriller but loses some impact when it leans too heavily into supernatural elements...I wish it had stayed more realistic till the end. 7 condemned criminals out of 10.

Can't really say that this is underrated as those who know better have been singing its high praises for some time. It really is a staple from the 360 launch title era. Fantastic atmosphere, uber creepy design that can make your skin crawl, challenging combat. It is very much so a survival game. You won't be falling back on your Call of Duty strategies nope. Its a brutal game and it is made by the same geniuses that brought us the highly entertaining F.E.A.R. The story is actually pretty bold for the time. Catch this one on sale and you've got yourself a massive steal. Edit: Please make sure to research some fixes for this game that can be found online very easily. It has some speed bumps here and there that need to be ironed out for a good experience.

This game is a sick horror experience, true hidden gem this one. Condemned is heavy on the bleak atmosphere, psychological horror, brutal first person combat, mint sound design, amazing reactionary AI enemies just like F.E.A.R from the same devs (Rip Monolith) A somewhat interesting story that's akin to the likes of the film se7en but goes abit ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the end, fun detective mode gadgets to scan crime scenes, great run time coming in at 6-7 hours on hard for me, perfect length for a horror game like this to avoid the gameplay loop of beating the living ♥♥♥♥ out of enemies to not get too samey along with the similar looking environments. It might be short for some and maybe too simple with only having a select few weapons, a block button/parry and four directional attack, two enemy types, lackluster bosses, and limited use of guns but that also works in the games balance as guns are the power item making fights easier to overcome but only have limited use with so little ammo the game gives you, this also makes encounters tense against the AI that wields one. Making use of the taser/ environmental cover or turning the AI against each other watching them beat each out down makes the fights super dynamic. The brawler first person combat plus strong atmosphere are Condemneds strong points and for 6-7 hours its a memorable experience that doesn't insult your time, 100% worth checking out for horror game enjoyers.

The game is fairly dated and could benefit from a remake/remaster. Still enjoyed it more than most modern slop games. Make sure you check PC Gaming Wiki for a link to install an upscaled texture pack and fixes. Also read on the Nexus page for the texture mod to delete some problematic files.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is a classic first person horror game that still holds up today. Its gameplay is fun, if a bit repetitive and a bit challenging. The graphics have aged a bit, but not so much as to make the game unplayable. The horror aspects are still effective and the story is interesting to follow along. My only real complaint is that the sequel, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, is not listed on Steam for purchase. Hopefully one day that changes as I much preferred its combat system.
