Dec. 2025
I have many memories from playing this game on my PS3 as a kid, and upon revisiting it, I'm glad it holds up as good as it does. The writing, story, & art design are all fantastic. Even though it's geared towards kids there's still a great amount of care put into each character's dialogue, there's some genuinely funny lines in this game. First thing I wanna touch on is the combat, which is admittedly one of the parts I find the least cool. Given the fact that it's a turn-based RPG geared towards kids, there's not much depth to the system other than choosing your costume & stamps. While it is fun to try out different combinations of these unlocks, the game doesn't throw any scenario where it truly matters, save for like 2-3 bosses. I had fun trying to make the best loadout that balances attack and support costumes, but since the vast majority of combat encounters are over with in less than 4 turns, most of these longevity/attrition-based battle stamps and ult moves become useless compared to the "big fuckin attack" stuff. Why use a costume that has a support ultimate that's never going to have the chance to be used, especially when I can instead use one that does a ton of damage to all enemies at once, making the battle end quicker. This is all the more dissatisfying when you take in how some of the boss fights are really fun and force you to use your resources to your advantage. The first Metxel fight is a great example of this, he does a threatening amount of damage, has multiple phases, and summons smaller enemies to fight. if you focus your team comp solely on single-target damage, you're going to struggle. The final 2 bosses, which you fight back-to-back, are also very well designed, the final boss especially. I remember being stuck on him for a long time as a kid, having to resort to getting my dad to help beat him. I will say that it's not really fair to ask for more depth from this game, as I can see that they wanted to keep it simple and easy for little children to be able to understand, and how that very decision held back the things they were able to do with some of the boss fights, but I can't help but imagine a deeper system with 4 party members who specialize in certain damage types, and maybe more equippable slots for stamps or some other unlock entirely. One of my favorite aspects of this game is the artstyle and level design. The way how the game handles overworld and combat scenes in two entirely different styles is super cool, seemingly cartoonish-looking monsters and characters turn much more serious and fantasy-esque once you initiate battle with them. It's always fun finding a new enemy or boss and first seeing what their combat appearance looks like. The atmosphere and vibes of the overworld are so well-put together too, each area has its own theme and feeling. The starting area, Auburn Pines, is homy, cozy, and reminiscent of my younger days going trick-or-treating around my block. Although linear, the area opens up pretty well and even has a few shortcuts and hidden areas to find if you're looking for some extra goodies. The 2nd area, Autumn Haven mall, starts off in a under-construction area, which eases you into the new enemy type before you gain access to the full area. Compared to Auburn Pines, it brings its own characteristics, like having 3 floors and a fast travel system. Despite this, it feels a little smaller even though it's technically larger. The final area is kind of a mashup of 3 smaller zones, and is somewhat lacking in terms of consistency, but this is most likely due to it being the end of the game and the studio not having time to fully flesh it out. The areas do their job well in terms of directing the player on where to go, and providing a bunch of little objects to hit for candy, but I wish there was just a little more to do, there's not much in terms of side quests outside of the usual bobbing for apples and hide n seek npcs that are present in each area. Having themed minigames and sidequests per area could have gone a long way to making things feel a little more full, but the game does fine without them. Circling back to what I was saying about design, I really enjoy the art for all the different things in this game. Battlestamps, the collectible cards, the menu and ui design, it all ties together so perfectly. I'm currently playing through the Grubbins on Ice expansion, and I'll most likely revisit this review once I finish it, but as it stands this is an amazing game that captures the childhood magic of Halloween near perfectly, and influenced a lot of the things I liked as a kid, and continue to like as an adult. My love for Halloween has never really faded, maybe this game is part of the reason to blame for that.

What a cute albeit challenging game and perfect for Halloween season! I really enjoyed the story and the monster fights, though the fights did start to feel repetitive after a while. Unlocking all the different costumes and discovering their abilities was fun and I absolutely loved the transformations and special power during combat. This game is older, but still playable and fun 14 years after release. Achievements are pretty straightforward although some are missable if you're not actively searching for all the parts for costumes and doing every quest. There is one achievement I changed my system clock for because it wants you to play on Christmas Day and I honestly don't see myself playing a Halloween themed game on Christmas. My only complaint was one of the abilities requires hitting shift multiple times in a row, which kept making the windows pop-up for turning sticky keys on show up. I had to get in the habit of counting how many times I hit shift in a row and making sure to hit another key when each time I got to 4.

I play Costume Quest every October for Halloween. It is one of my favorite seasonal video games. I grew-up playing it on the Xbox 360 back when it was first released in 2010. I loved it then and I love it now. It's pretty easy to pick-up-and-play, especially if you have played it multiple times before. However, the charm and atmosphere in this game makes it a video game worth playing over and over again. One of my favorite video games.
