If you're looking for an experience that will take you back to the era of 2D Pokémon, and only that, this game is for you. Let's face it, this game looks cheaply made and was, in fact, initially a mobile game with microtransacations. It was then ported to PC with all the microtransactions removed. However, the gameplay, story, creature-design and all in all just a satisfactorily comparable experience to the 2D Pokémon games, maybe even better designed, really make this an enjoyable experience for creature-collector fans. The story is very campy, but got a few chuckles out of me. The combat system, though much simpler than Pokémon's, is refreshing. Sometimes, Pokémon's various systems don't really complement each other and can get a little overwhelming, but this game takes the opposite approach. Fewer types, status effects, moves, evolution methods, items, all of it is simpler and I enjoyed that. Creature-design is pretty well done and because the combat system is simpler, you can pick whichever one's you want on your team just from how it looks and its type (from the rares at least) without having to worry about which one is the strongest. This game is easy enough that you don't have to worry about that. In essence, this is a linear creature-collector that does the simple version of the formula very well. If that's all you expect, then you'll have a great time. I look forward to playing the sequel. 100% Achievement Completion Perspective: There is a little bit of a grind in the post-game to catch all the Nexomon and reach level 99, but not bad at all. My recommendation is to catch every new Nexomon you encounter the first time. It will save a lot of time.
I literally spent two or three days beating this game, and that says a lot about how much I enjoyed it. It was so engaging that I forgot about most of the tasks on my to-do list, bruh… Overall, this is one of the most enjoyable monster-catching games I’ve played. I had a great time with it, and I can’t wait to try Nexomon: Extinction later!
It feels like playing a brand new 2D Pokémon game but with simpler mechanics. There's no breeding, no held items, no physical/special split, no dual types. Only 7 types. 310 creatures to collect. There's some quirks too. Like the speed stat is actually your evasion and you always get the first move in battle. The game also directly tells you the rarity of your Nexomon (rarer creatures have better stats) and you can check at which level they evolve in your Nexopedia. The high points of the game are arguably the story and the more challenging difficulty (it's still easy if you play smart and the grind is minimal). I love both Nexomon games stories. It's nothing complex but compared to Pokémon it's Shakespeare. Highly recommended for fans of the genre. Don't let the mobile skin put you off. It's a great game.
An "Alright" pokemon-clone... ... but there are way better pokemon-clones out there like the sequel Nexomon: Extinction or Coromon . There are some specific design choices in this game that make it not as great. Mainly the fact that Nexomon rarity is everything. A "mega-rare" in this game will have more evolutions and stats than a "common" Nexomon. Also, all of the Nexomon are pretty much clones of one another statwise with lots of overlapping movesets. Additionally, the debuffs in this game are pretty brutal. Bind is a multi-turn complete stun. Confusion is a guaranteed death-sentence if you don't dispel it or swap out the Nexomon.
