A brilliantly addictive, cartoonish sandbox that turns the stress of survival into pure, unadulterated fun. The original Crashlands is an absolute masterclass in how to make a crafting-survival game that is light on frustration and impossibly heavy on fun. You play as Flux Dabes, an intergalactic galactic delivery trucker who gets stranded on the alien planet Woanope after a floating head named Hewodokoos blows up your ship. From the second your escape pod hits the dirt, the game hooks you with its vibrant, cartoonish art style and a gameplay loop that is the definition of a "time-sink." It takes all the tedious elements of the survival genre—like inventory management and losing your gear upon death—and completely throws them out the window, giving you an infinite pockets system that lets you focus entirely on exploring, smashing things, and building a massive base. The combat and progression systems are simple to look at but incredibly satisfying to execute. Combat plays out like a high-speed dance; enemies project their attack ranges on the ground in bright red shapes, forcing you to dodge, weave, and strike back with a massive arsenal of craftable weapons and gadgets. The loop of hunting down alien fauna like Wompits and Glutterflies to harvest their bits, using those bits to craft a shinier suit of armor, and then using that armor to hunt down an even bigger monster is utterly intoxicating. When you combine that with a pet system that lets you hatch and raise your own stable of alien monsters, it becomes a game where you sit down to play for twenty minutes and suddenly realize the sun is coming up. What truly elevates Crashlands into a cult classic, however, is its incredible heart and razor-sharp wit. The dialogue between Flux and her sarcastic robotic companion, Juicebox, is genuinely hilarious, filled with the signature slapstick and "dubstep silliness" that the developers at Butterscotch Shenanigans are famous for. The questing system is massive, guiding you across three completely distinct and massive biomes while introducing a quirky cast of alien races who desperately need your help building everything from living rooms to high-tech weapons. It is the perfect, "no-brainer" game to throw on while listening to a podcast or relaxing after a long day. It’s witty, it's deep, and it remains one of the finest time-wasting adventures on Steam. 10/10 — I came to find my stolen delivery packages, but I ended up becoming the god-king of a swamp race and raising a mutant rhino. Best delay ever.
It is a good game, similar in some ways to Don't Starve, but not as hard (I played in Story Mode, btw). I'm giving a thumbs up and will try Crashlands 2 in the future, but I will stop playing after 17 hours. The main reason is that what needs to be done in each quest is very unclear and looking up each quest objective online in very annoying. That was by far the main problem for me, there are a lot of quests and for the sake of being funny the game is very unclear about what needs to be done in most of them. I get the funny dialogs intentions, but after that, each quest should have a very clear description of its objective somewhere on screen (so that you don't need to google them every time).
It's somewhat older and originally made for tablets (i think?). But it's charming and kind of addictive in a way, even though the core gameplay loop isn't very varied and i'm not a real fan of the combat system. It's got it flaws (like, especially interface-wise, and for example the 'open' world is ultimately just kind of empty) but I still had a good time with it.
