A nightmare for some, A prediction by others I was looking for a mindless shooter and found this game. I thought "5€ is worth it. It's less that my usual bad lunch". I was not expecting a game like this. --------------------------------------------------------- Oh no… no, no no… Oh? Okay! This is a rogue-lite and I almost refunded it immediately after I realised it. I am not a fan of that genre, but it did some things right that kept me playing. It is a rogue-LITE, which means you have the opportunity to get stronger with each run. It is not all luck. After every 5 or 10 level you get an ability and as you get the choice between 8 or so abilities you can often get the exact ability you want. At the end of every level you can get an upgrade, heal or get ammo, but throughout the level you can get between 1 to 5 chances to upgrade, heal or get ammo. It works wonderfully. These doll stations come in clutch when you run out of ammo or durability for your knife. Yes, they knife as durability, which I disliked at the start, as you also will have very little ammo, so if you run out of both you are pretty much dead. The other weapons are okay. Nothing special. You got a handgun, shotgun, assault rifle and a sniper. The sniper is far superior to the rest of the guns. With a few upgrades it can one-shot and even make you invisible to the enemy. Of course ammo for it is hard to come by. While the assault rifle does less damage, it is later on much easier to get ammo for, as there is an upgrade that gives you a full mag after every round. Enemies also have a chance to drop better version with different stats. Back to the knife! Later you have a chance to get the dull knife ability, which removes durability and with some damage upgrades to the knife, it comes your greatest asset. --------------------------------------------------------- SCP level freaky Speaking of assets! Pardon the pun. The enemies are androids, or dolls, as they are referred to in the game. While they do have some big assets, they actually feel more creepy in the beginning. There are multiple enemy types. Most of the melee. There are a single long range enemy that will charge up a shot. Another has an AOE range attack and has an AOE circle surrounding it, that heals the other dolls. Even when the AOE enemy is dead it is still surrounded by a small field that can damage you and heal the enemies. As most will try to get in close to do damage, they will require to move between obstacles. Often you find cheap games with bad path-finding where the enemies get stuck walking into walls, but not in this game. The enemies move without a problem. They still a big basic though. Most will first attack when they get very close and still easy to get away from. There are no leap attacks, but I do think that was intentional. Most levels is in a small room with tight corridors. At the start you don't really think about the room sizes as you are only fighting 3-5 enemies on each level and the enemies will first start attacking when you get close to their proximity or attack them long range. In later levels you can end up fighting up to 40 dolls and this is where the small rooms really feels claustrophobic, but I am saying so in a good way. The fighting feels much more risky and you really have to stay calm not to get surrounded. Especially on levels with the Yellow dolls that not only has a weapon and a shield, but after some damage will turn red and run after you. They are very frightening as they make you panic and require a lot of damage to take down. If you lose, you get to place some permanent upgrades to your weapons and yourself with point you earn from playing. These will help you for your next runs. If you actually beat the game, you get to take your weapons with you for the next run, so if they have legendary stats you are golden for the next run. --------------------------------------------------------- Wait what is happening The story is very unclear. You get some serious SCP vibe at the start. You see soldier part of a company called Ophelia looking at surveillance footage and it turn into poopy. Your fellow comrades dies quickly and you are the only one left and you have to escape the "doll factory". As you play and complete levels, logs get unlocked on the starting menu, that explains more. It turns out some sort of error happen at a Biodol lab owned by a company called Selen Industry. The dolls seems to have been used for work at factories (I think). Each of them has a different purpose. The Miku looking Doll, the boss, even seem to be designed by the same company you work for and for military purpose. It isn't much and each log entry are only a few sentences, but let's be honest. You are not looking at this game because you want a great story. --------------------------------------------------------- I escaped, but do I really wanna leave? Overall, I do like the game. For the price, it exceeded my expectations quite a bit. Besides from the occasional ragdoll-in-wall shenanigans there really wasn't any bugs or glitches. Gun-play felt good and there was some tactics involved, which I did not expect. The more I played, the more I wanted to keep playing. I played for 3 straight hours actually. I did not expect to like the game. When I found out it was in the rogue genre, I was ready to absolutely hate the game. Instead I found a fun experience with more well balanced mechanics than games for this price usually have. While, there wasn't much story, I did see potential in it. I would love a normal FPS shooter campaign with a much fleshed out story as a sequel if the dev(s) ever decide to revisit this IP again. I would love to talk with whomever wrote the story and hear how they came up with it. So… Should you buy this game? Yeah! Why not? I mean a cup of the cheapest boiling mud is often more expensive and at least you can have fun for a few hours with this game or maybe even much longer.
