Yeah. The best one. THE BEST BOOMER SHOOTER HANDS DOWN Bruh, its inspired by RE4 but its RE4 with Blood with every good thing about boomer shooting. Seriously. This is a masterpiece and a true passionate love letter to the games of the 90s. If you like FPS games, this is for you. Do you like horror? Got it in spades. Like solving puzzles? yep Theres no map. Its oldschool in all the best ways. Like an expresso of the best of the 90s. All the best parts filtered into a tight perfect cube. Get in there. Get it.

My friends this is quite literally the Hollow Knight of boomer shooters. If you played Doom 1 or 2 cuz you where curious about retro FPS games, play it. If you played RE4, play it. If you've played Blood, Quake, Dusk, Duke 3D, Shadow Warrior. play it. This game doesn't just take it's influences and mimic them, it understands aspect of what made them interesting and fun to play, then elevates them. Please if you love FPS games and have been on the fence, I promise this is easily one of if not THE BEST one out there right now. The only thing I'd say may dissuade some people is if you don't particularly like voxels. Otherwise 10/10 keep letting this guy cook

Cultic goes all-in on the Blood vibes, but is definitely not Blood at heart. Mostly employs situation-driven encounter design, Half-Life style. Many situations are deliberate setpieces in the vein of what a Valve ‘cabal’ might have come up with. A sniper-dominated gorge. A dark forest with an ambush triggered when only at its heart. A labyrinthine crypt that mostly plays like a dungeon-crawler with not much in the way of combat. Relies little on procedural gameplay. Evidently, immersion was more important than pure mechanics. There is a lot of “cool factor” stuff: shooting and catching enemy hatchets out of the air, using dropped enemy shields, throwing lanterns to create fire pools (like Call of Juarez ). There’s an enemy styled after S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ’s poltergeist – spliced with controller of the same origin: it lifts and tosses physics objects at the player, plus deals damage over time when in line of sight. It generally feels like a “let’s throw all the cool things together” experience. In that sense it somewhat reminds me of the recent Fortune’s Run , only not quite so inordinate. The atmosphere is hardly Blood -y as well: less edgy comic book and more of a mystical Western. Particularly embodied in the grandiose “American Sublime is having a manure-and-chewing-tobacco-scented democratic entrepreneurial liberty-sex with Manifest Destiny under the stars on the Great Plains” soundtrack. Now, for the highlight. Cultic perhaps has some of the best level-design in modern boomer shooters – at least the ones I played. Part of the reason I even decided to try it is because I learnt that episode 2 was partially contributed to by Damien Azreal, author of the Blood mod Marrow which has some outstanding levels. Jason himself is more than competent at this business as well. There are often multiple paths to progress through the level or parts of it – without turning it into a flat non-progressive arena you can approach from any angle. Often, I saw a – if not novel, then definitely rare – level structure of a vertical horseshoe. Romero 101 here: a horseshoe is a level or room structure where you can see your goal, but it is separated from you with untraversable obstacles such as pits or walls, and in order to get to it you have to go around it . A vertical horseshoe is the same, but instead of going around you have to descend (say, to the bottom of the ravine) and then go back up to your previous eye level, just on the other side. Extremely satisfying to traverse. And then come the actual environments: natural spaces are vast and awe-inspiring, tight industrial buildings are sufficiently daunting and suffocating, and when you get to storm an asylum effectively turned into a fortress with intersecting trenches and roof scaffolding, the whole thing feels positively triumphant. Unfortunate. Because the enemies have literally no way to counteract the player and his arsenal in these environments. You can always snipe them off from a distance, and even when you don’t or can’t there’s simply not enough enemy numbers to sufficiently pressure you. The damage of single enemy entities is very high – in order to have some sort of balance in that area. Another way Cultic adds spice to encounters is weaponizing darkness – again, almost never used in shooters lest the player get – Tchernobog forbid! – frustrated . Dark areas are properly dark, and you only get a flashlight halfway through the episode. Again, that plays into the immersion-over-gameplay vector Cultic ’s design leans into. While I respect the audacity, I cannot say I enjoyed these sections much as this game is hardly a horror experience. And with this approach, it perhaps comes as a surprise then that the best level in the game is the slaughter level. You’re stuck in a church, a hail of bullets shatters stained glass windows, and it’s on: half a dozen waves of all the enemies so far encountered in a spacious and multidirectional arena with a bossfight at the end and a singular checkpoint right before it. Turns out Cultic can actually be fun as a procedural shooter, it just doesn’t want to! I so hope the second episode brings about more of this type of experience. Right, before I forget. The lever-action rifle. Top shelf boomstick disrupted my circadian rhythm. Single-impact. Headshot-oriented. Fast as lightning. Forever range. Two firing modes – normal and COOL . Bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, chick-chick-chick-chick-chick-chick-chick, cha-chick, bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, how much chick would a cultist chuck if a cultist could chuck chick, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang, chuck-bang…

It’s a boomshoot masterpiece. The level design is the real star here, with intricate and sprawling areas that reward exploration. You never feel lost and every place feels logical and like it makes sense to the setting. The enemies are excellent, requiring thoughtful approaches. They will cook you if you’re not being intentional. Gunplay is *chefs kiss* with every weapon feeling delightful. The rifles feel like cheating when you line up some poor fool’s noggin and pop it like a ripe watermelon before he knows you’re there. And the art style… who would have known a muddy mix of brown, blue, orange would sing like this? It drips atmosphere and I found moments genuinely creepy. That it’s made by one person is not actually surprising: the clarity and singleness of vision here is so evident. And it pays off.

This is the best feeling boomer shooter ive ever played. Hits the perfect sweet spot of being a bit slower paced compared to something like Dusk, while still feeling snappy. If you enjoy games like Ultrakill this may be a little slow for your liking, but it's perfect for me.
