Feb. 2026
FPS Games have had a storytelling curse put on them ever since John Carmack compared Story in Doom to Story in Porn, and thus, FPS Games and Retro FPS games especially now are forever held to ignore stories, fail at environmental storytelling, while the rest of the game is polished to the enth degree. My issue with this is that it kills the longevity of the game, whether it be on a first playthrough and the urge to continue, or wanting to replay the game when there's nothing to grasp onto. FMF is another Retro FPS with yet another crummy story that decides to "Tell, not show." as everything is told through giant unsubtle exposition dumps via cutscenes. The player character (whoever you choose) doesn't showcase their feelings, they tell us. They don't show us the twist, they tell us, they don't bother to show important story details, they tell us. Do you see my problem? When there's not a narrative or reason to care, it ends up becoming extremely boring and while this has a great set up, it's ruined by atrocious voice acting, some of the most nails on a chalkboard crap you'll hear in any FPS today. I had to turn the voices off just to enjoy the game at all. So to all who want to make a Retro FPS, and to those who don't think story doesn't matter in FPS Games, IT DOES. A LOT. And it has been done successfully before in Half-Life (Environmental Storytelling), DUSK (Worldbuilding and Gameplay tie neatly together) and Slayers X (Meta satire outside the game's main plot). Show your story, don't tell it, because most of the time it's not going to be well thought out and having people doing full on essays thinking what the game was actually about is not a smart idea. Begrudingly, I am going to recommend this game. Because if it weren't for that and a couple other elements, this would be absolutely one of the best FPS Games you can buy right now. FMF has one of the best skill trees in an FPS Game. It's carefully sorted out and it gives the player priority to plan out things rather than randomly choose things at will. For example, I focused on getting more experience, then upgrading my ammo capacity, then upgrading weapons and finally upgrading my special abilities which are used for the most part during the last part of the game. It's smart, clever design that I don't really see other FPS skill trees do, so I absolutely love that this was a more intelligent skill tree compared to Shadow Warrior or other FPS Games with this. It helps that the gunplay is excellent, these are some really nice weapons and once you upgrade them they help in the long run especially at the end of the game. You can make your pistol semi auto, you can make your machine gun more efficent, you can make the SMG a grenade launcher and also throw knives if you get the skill for it. The marriage of the skill tree, killing enemies for experience and the fantastic gunplay are what make this game. The graphics are also impressive, looking straight out of an western adult graphic novel which makes the world feel lived in. The music is also bordering on really great and I found the tracks to be better than most Retro FPS games. My other issues involve a couple things. I'm not one to complain about First Person Platforming in games as most of the games that I have played that have it handle it really well, but this is just not done right at all. I never felt confident doing any jumps and the way the depth perception is in some levels it's just awkward and uncomfortable to do so. Titanfall 2 this is not. Nor is it Doom Eternal. The bosses leave lots to be desired. Either they're cumbersome to fight and require movement that is inappropriate for this type of game, or they're extremely easy and a let down. I liked only one boss, the Episode 4 boss. That's because I think it's clever and set up well in terms of the arena they put you in and the intro to it is kind of brilliant. Yes, you do fight Cthulhu, but it's disappointing. My only other issuie is that the player's hitbox feels gigantic as avoiding enemy fire in a lot of these narrow levels isn't that great. I usually like to play games on the easiest setting and then sometimes later on play them on their normal difficulty as I find doing this makes me appreciate the game more after I beat it and whenever I attempt to play it again, but FMF just felt ridiculous sometimes in how often I got hit by projectiles. I also mentioned the awful voice acting, turn that off. Just because you have the budget to do voice acting doesn't mean you should if you can't get half-decent voice actors. This is well worth playing for it's economical and smartly implemented skill tree and gunplay, which is the reason this is so successful in the first place. It's too bad about the crummy storytelling, underwhelming bosses and bad platforming. Get this on sale.

First run took ~5 hours. Finished everything in 8.1 hours. The game isn’t brutally difficult it just punishes bad positioning. Once you stop panicking and start moving, it clicks fast. Combat feels good, soundtrack fits perfectly, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Short, intense, and fun. Recommended.

A decent Doom like boomer shooter but my main issues with the game are 1) in my opinion you take way too much damage from a single attack 2) the lack of Feedback when you get shot can often leave you scratching your head over what caused you to die in the first place and 3) the lack of ammo can at times make the game borderline unplayable the higher the difficulty you play on. I'm playing on hard and the game is just an unbalanced mess (my opinion). I could lower the difficulty but honestly I dislike having to do that just so I can play a fairer challenge, make it fair on all difficulties instead of making it artificial difficulty. Despite these complaints I'm still going to recommend it as there is a good boomer shooter here which to me personally has very nice graphics as well. If you're going to buy this just be advised this is a rather difficult game where you will find yourself dying quite a lot on the first Playthrough.

This game is like if H. P. Lovecraft forced old DOOM and new DOOM to have unprotected sex while borderlands filmed the whole thing, and honestly I'm here for it.

A beautiful game that I truly enjoyed. Highlights: • A well-designed and enjoyable skill tree. • Great variety of weapons that keeps combat interesting. • Bosses are genuinely fun and well-crafted. • Diverse levels that keep the gameplay fresh. • The only downside is that one achievement doesn’t unlock even after meeting the requirements.
