Dec. 2025
From the outset, the sequel feels far more confident in what it wants to be. Danganronpa 2 smooths over many of the character issues present in the original and significantly expands interactions, motives, and overall atmosphere within its cases. Without overselling it, the game ultimately comes across as a more polished and better executed version of the first entry. Some may struggle to warm up to the new cast simply because they weren’t the originals, but the reality is that you spend more time with these characters than you ever did in the first game. That cuts both ways if you dislike a character, they might linger longer than you’d like, and if you grow attached to someone, well it is a killing game, and no one is safe. This extended focus works in the sequel’s favor, especially since the cast is far more eccentric and experimental. Certain moments even toy with your perception of reality, allowing the game to stretch its imagination much further than before. Thankfully, the story eventually ties its ideas together in a way that feels clearer and less like a massive info dump than the final case of the first game. That said, the narrative does follow many of the same structural beats as its predecessor, which may frustrate some players. Personally, I think the improvements to character motivations and group dynamics do enough to justify the repetition. Gameplay is once again divided into four main components Free Time, Story segments, Investigations, and Class Trials. While all of these play important roles, Class Trials still dominate the experience. These trials typically unfold in two phases: first, establishing the motive, location, and circumstances of the crime, and second, identifying how and why the culprit committed the murder. This structure can occasionally lead to padding or filler, but overall, the cases are handled better than most of those in the first game. Free Time makes up the next largest portion, allowing you to bond with the cast and learn more about them as they gradually open up. Mileage may vary, but it certainly feels like you get more meaningful time with characters compared to the original. One lingering annoyance is that a character can become permanently locked out if you don’t interact with them early on. Story and Investigation segments fill out the rest of the game, and while the sequel ventures into more interesting territory, it sometimes pushes its murder motivations to extremes. In that sense, I slightly prefer the more grounded approach of the first game, though investigations themselves feel largely unchanged.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is a fantastic sequel that improves on nearly everything from the first game. The cast is memorable, the story keeps you hooked, and the minigames add a lot of fun variety. The class trials are smoother and more engaging, with a perfect mix of tension and humor, and of course, Nagito’s wild moments steal the show.

It would be amazing if it weren't for the setting and frankly numerous plot-holes. Gundham Tanaka is literally my favorite character in fiction.
