Danganronpa. The first game, lying hidden somewhere in steam. The one they call the Ultimate Despair. Watch out for it.

This is a visual novel that mixes murder mystery investigation with everyday school life, and it’s at its best when leaning into its sharp writing and intense cases. Many people compare it to a blend of Ace Attorney and Zero Escape, and that’s honestly pretty accurate. The story takes place in the (fictional) Hope’s Peak Academy, an elite school that only accepts students with an “Ultimate” talent prodigies in sports, science, writing, and just about everything else. The one exception is the “Ultimate Lucky Student,” chosen at random, and that ends up being our protagonist, Makoto Naegi. What should’ve been his first day at a dream school turns into a nightmare when he and 14 others wake up trapped inside, cut off from the outside world. Their new headmaster, the robotic bear Monokuma, explains the only rule that matters: the only way to escape is to kill a classmate and get away with it. This isn’t a battle royale murders must be committed secretly, and after a body is discovered, everyone investigates. Once enough time passes, a class trial begins where evidence your “truth bullets” is presented, arguments are challenged, and the group votes on the culprit. Get it right, and the murderer is executed. Get it wrong, and everyone else dies instead. The writing is the strongest part of the game. Every character has clear motives, personality, and depth, and the narrative constantly pushes you between hope and despair. Even when characters fall into archetypes, none of them feel one note. The voice acting is excellent, and on PC it’s clean and smooth. Gameplay wise, it’s mostly visual-novel reading with free time segments where you roam the halls, talk to classmates, and build relationships. The investigations and class trials bring the real gameplay: gathering evidence, shooting down contradictory statements, presenting proof, and solving mini-games under pressure. The trials are easily the highlight they’re tense, stylish, and reveal the truth piece by piece in a satisfying way. The paper diorama visual style is unique. It’s 2.5D, almost like a pop-up book, and while it’s not for everyone, it works well with the mood. The soundtrack is fantastic and sets the tone perfectly. Even though it started on handhelds, the PC version runs great and feels right at home. Overall, this is one of the best visual novel style games you can play on PC. Strong characters, emotional moments, clever mysteries, and unforgettable class trials make it absolutely worth your time.
