A very good 2D action platformer souls-like. The game is rather short, I completed the full playthrough in about 10 hrs, and in those 10 hrs I had a great time with it. Overall, an easy recommend for me. One of those small indie gems that pair well with Steam Deck. Pros: - The art style and the atmosphere are top tier. The game actually feels like a post-apoc cyberpunk. In fact, I'd absolutely love to see more games in the Dark Light's world. - Visuals are also great. The game punches above its weight when it comes to presentation. - The music is decent and aids in creating the atmosphere. - The movement is fluid and overall the controls feel good. - The combat is fun to engage in and satisfying. - There are a lot of character progression features - you can upgrade the attributes, health and stamina, weapons, drone skills, implants. Weapons can be infused with elemental effects. This creates a good variety of builds. - A decent variety of enemies and bosses. - There is a minor choice with consequence when it comes to side quests that encourages repeat playthroughs. - There are some interesting rogue-like elements when you accumulate the buffs and temporary skills that are reset on death. - Level design is good and I can't recall any time in the game when I was bored or frustrated by the levels. - The game doesn't overstay it's welcome and does not become boring. There is a NG+ mode in case you want more after the you finish it. - No bugs or performance issues. Cons: - The game is not really a metroidvania - it's mostly linear with some branching side quests. I'm personally fine with that, but keep that in mind when purchasing. - I found the load times on my Steam Deck rather long. - The balance is a bit off - it feels like the firearms are just too OP. - While I'm fine with it, I'm sure some other souls-like enjoyers will find the game a bit too easy, especially with the right build. NG+ does increase the challenge though. - The control scheme to use skills and throwables is not very convenient. Switching between those in the middle of the combat can be annoying.

one of the lowkey coolest developers on steam. this game, and the other one they're working on, has a really established vibe throughout that's very well done. cool art style. its like a whole weird mythology. the game is really cool. dark neon scifi. i feel like some kind of cable dude surviving the apocalypse. totally worth it if you like that kind of thing. compared to other side scrolls, this one feels a bit more like.. maybe splinter cell or half life or something. spooky and eerie and kind of tactical and techy. eldritch horror mixed with tactical combat.

How is this game not at the top of more people's "best sci-fi metroidvanias" list?? I can't tell you how sick and tired I am of fantasy themed, medieval, swords and sorcery MV's,RPG,soulslikes...etc. A game can still have swords and magic, while being a sci-fi game, as Darklight has masterfully proven. It's a bleak, ruined, post apocalyptic world, that's gorgeous, stunning, and drenched in cyberpunk aesthetics. Calling it a straight up metroidvania would be doing it injustice. It's part dungeon crawler, part RPG, part soulslike, part looter crawler. If you find yourself ever overwhelmed, grind and farm to better stats and gear. This isn't necessary, but it does pay off and makes things much easier. At first, the game throws a lot of info at you, and then kind of dumps you to your own devices. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, getting the hang of the systems, the controls and action skills bindings, but it's actually rather intuitive and second nature quickly. It being a soulslike-ish, and even a bit roguelite in some regards, there's is a death penalty, but it isn't harsh and unforgiving. Anything lost is easily regained quickly, if you fall to reclaim your in game currency and faction action skills. Enemies at some special areas, to change up and become different, more difficult variations from run to run. It's odd but very cool and fun, and can yield much better rewards. I've been dying for a fresh new take on action side scrollers/metroidvanias, without freaking elves, orcs, and the usual mythological pitfalls so prevalent these days. This more than surprised me, engrossed me, and kept me playing non-stop. Graphics, combat, controls, music, are all top notch. Playing this on my ROG Ally z1 extreme, the performance was flawless as well. Absolutely give this game a shot. If at first it doesn't vibe to you, stick with it, once you get the hang of it, the logic behind the UI and systems, it's one hell of a good time.

Dark Light is a really awesome 2D platformer. + Controls are precise and smooth. + Combat on higher difficulties is challenging and fun. + Good atmosphere. + Graphics, especially the backgrounds as well as animations are really good. o Music/sound are solid, there are some nice tracks, sound effects lack a bit. - Navigation (where do I go next?) is quite confusing sometimes. (The game does not end after the Kukulkan/Dragon boss fight, just enter the appearing door/portal on the left side!) - Inventory, skill and menu management is really clunky. The later levels feel more polished than the early ones. You can feel that a really dedicated team poured their passion and heartblood into this game. Playing it brought back memories of the old Castlevania games, for good measure some Darksouls elements like retrieve your currency on death or lose it, have been implemented.
