I really enjoyed playing this game and didn't realize it wasn't the full game when I purchased it -- Now i am sad that it doesn't seem to be coming out anytime soon. There are a few people complaining that its similar to hollow knight but honestly that is one of the reasons I liked it so much. It had this happy nostalgic feeling about it and personally I would like more games to come out like this even if they are knock off esque. I don't think they are hurting the pockets of team cherry at this point in life so the more games the merrier and I surly don't want to wait 7 years to play another game like this --- so why not have some games that resemble hollow knight --- I really liked this game and was enjoying exploring the world until it abruptly ended ;-(
Seriously, this is a really good game. It’s short but sweet, with excellent parry mechanics. I’ve played many Metroidvanias, including Hollow Knight, and this definitely reminds me of that—though of course not quite at the same level of hype. Exploration is solid as well. One of the few downsides is that it doesn’t feel fully developed yet, with several areas that seem inaccessible. That might also explain why it currently has a “Mixed” rating on Steam. That said, if it’s true that this was created by a single developer, that’s incredibly impressive—he’s clearly very skilled.
Pros: [*]Innovative level design that constantly surprises. [*]Tight, responsive controls that make gameplay feel satisfying. [*]The art is nice although many people compare it to HK. [*]Challenging yet fair difficulty that rewards skill and experimentation. [*]Rich sound design and soundtrack that complement the experience. [*]Upgrades feel earned. Cons: [*]Somehow the game wants to run in windowed mode otherwise it never loads the game past the title menu. [*]Loading a new screen the first time takes ages. [*]Some minor balancing quirks in boss encounters. [*]A few secrets might be easy to overlook without exploration. I have seen comparisons to Hollow Knight floating around online, but honestly, the obsession with labeling everything as a Hollow Knight clone is short-sighted. Deviator brings its own identity to the table, blending gameplay, design, and atmosphere in ways that are entirely its own. There are countless games out there that borrow elements from others, sometimes even more directly, but they fly under the radar because they lack hype or widespread recognition. That should not diminish the work the Deviator team has done here. From the moment you start playing, it is clear that the developers poured creativity, passion, and precision into every aspect of the game. The environments are alive with personality, the mechanics feel polished, and the overall experience constantly pushes you to think and react differently. Every level feels like a carefully constructed playground of challenges and discoveries. While there is difficulty, it is never punishing for its own sake. There is a genuine sense of reward for exploration and mastery, and the game respects the player's time and intelligence in a way many popular titles forget.
