I initially bought this game and returned it almost immediately because I realized it was on PC Game Pass(which I already pay for). Now, after having binged the hell out of it for 16+ hours, I've come back to RE-purchase it on steam because the game is so good and I just want to give the devs their flowers... Bravo. This game is such a breath of fresh air: no hand holding, no map, no icons telling you where to go, and lots of environment puzzles(some brutally difficult, for me at least). I will admit, when I first started out, I was reeeally not sure about the quality, and was expecting some level of jank to be involved... i mean the title is peculiar, and it kinda gives off a general spooky friend-slop vibe. I even alt+f4'd a bunch in the beginning because I was just getting frustrated, like within the first 45 min alone i must have rage quit 3-4 times, convincing myself the game was probably not ready to ship and released in some early access beta state... Boy was I wrong. Little by little, as I started to make progress, I became fully hooked. After finally getting a decent weapon and learning the enemy behaviors, I found the combat to be quite easy and almost an afterthought(except maybe the freakin' bats sometimes). The real difficulty and fun of the game for me came through sheer exploration. Finding a new tool to unlock/connect different areas together, mapping everything out in your mind, having 3 options of paths to choose from and trying not to get lost etc, it's just so satisfying, reminded me of the Dark Souls franchise in that way. And there are secrets everywhere! Many of which I still dont even know what they mean yet! It's like Animal Well levels of world secrets, well maybe not that extreme, but still. In addition to the combat however, the cooking is perhaps another aspect of the game that doesn't quite shine as well as it could. It's not bad by any means, I suppose I just wish the food/drink durations were longer. There are a LOT of recipes though, so the more complex a dish is, the longer it lasts(generally speaking). I understand its designed the way it is so you have to decide risk vs reward when they run out while you're exploring, but sometimes I felt it took too long to make food in comparison to how long it lasted. The game also ran perfectly fine on my PC with no issues or crashes whatsoever, but I did play through it entirely solo, so I cant speak to any of the co-op experience. All to say, if you're looking for a game with satisfying metroidvania/soulslike exploration, thoughtfully difficult environmental puzzles, and to a lesser extent, minecraft-combat, give this game a chance. Just be warned, all of the solutions are told via the environment, the game does NOT tell you directly what's going on or what you need to do, you WILL get lost and confused. Just play close attention to your surroundings, and you'll be gosh darn deep dishin' your way all through this dungeon. P.S. I've read there were some bugs regarding peoples backpacks/items disappearing but I didn't run into anything personally, and I see the devs have been active about patches. I did accidentally fall off a ledge once and got trapped down in a large section with my backpack equipped, with no way to escape because I clearly wasn't meant to be down there yet. But I just threw all my items one by one back up to the platform I fell from, respawned myself from the menu("starve to death"), and went back to retrieve everything.

Just finished the full 2-player co-op playthrough with 100% achievements. Excellent game! At the moment it's just currently very buggy. Map design is very, very good, everything feels connected and it felt awesome to discover shortcuts and paths exploring every nook and cranny, easily the best aspect of the game. The bugs are very apparent unfortunately which was a major pain point and required me to re-host more than a handful of times. Issues like duplicating items (that would disappear on restart), being unable to interact with items with either inventory or backpack (required a restart), co-op player having issues with the water flask either being infinite or being used whenever I used mine? Sometimes he would drink his water and we'd both get hydrated. I got stuck behind a tree twice just for walking to close to it. Items appearing in hands visually for one player but not for the other. Grapple hooks are a godsend but climbing the ropes themselves have substantial issues which led to a number of a deaths from fall damage. Usually these bugs were easily mitigated by a restart, but it happened enough times that it was very noticeable and annoying. Features that I felt were undercooked/we didn't really use at all were furniture related ones. Maybe some players will, generally I do really enjoy those features in other games, but I think I made a rug once and then dismantled it almost immediately here. More navigation tools could be cool too? Signs or maybe the ability to write messages with chalk? Anyway, bugs aside, fantastic game otherwise, would love to play more games like this in the future. Would even love to see more content for this setting, easily would be up for buying a DLC dungeon or sequel.

I came for Delicious In Dungeon: The Video Game, and am not disappointed. In fact I'm having a lot of fun. In Skyrim, Valheim, and most other games with dungeon crawling, exploring a dungeon is not exploring so much as mapping. You apply the hand-on-wall algorithm until you've turned every corner, and then you're done. In Zelda, it's actually interesting, but the whole thing feels like a set piece. It doesn't feel like a real dungeon, it feels like an interactive dungeon experience inside of some amusement park. In Deep Dish Dungeon, you feel like you're actually exploring a dungeon. You are not a welcome guest, but as you figure out where things are, how things work, and what you're supposed to be doing, it starts to feel like a home. Or well, as much as a monster infested dungeon can feel like a home. Inventory management can be tedious, especially for solo players, and some of the more hidden treasures are a little too hidden. But overall, it's got a fun gameplay loop and a genuinely new experience.

lots to love about the game -- 'rooms' are fun to discover and explore, getting around requires some puzzle solving (nothing too complicated thus far), holding rat in hand is very cute. hoping you'll be able to have a pet rat at some point. balancing (?) is a bit of an issue. certain items spawn in a way you can't anticipate and may cause you to go for long periods of time without basic craftable items. for instance, leather is given to you sparingly at the early stages of the game, but you will *need* to hang onto one to make a workbench. there is no indication that leather is about to be hard to come by. if you spend the first couple you find on making backpacks (another downside: you cannot run with a backpack on, items may despawn currently when you die with a backpack on), you may toil away spending several additional hours before you come across another piece of leather in order to craft the workbench > pouch. I did not find this experience to be a satisfying reward that grants me a greater capacity hot-bar because I knew I should have been able to make it hours ago. it seems to me that nothing would be lost about the experience if leather was not part of the requirement for crafting a workbench, since the iron bar requirement already makes the workbench non-trivial to make. at the current slightly discounted rate ($13 usd), despite the kinks, I still would recommend deep dish dungeon. it's been fun enough that I'm willing to put up with the less polished aspects of the game. though I think you may have a better experience if you wait a couple weeks for the developer to get a handle on the urgent fixes and possibly rebalance.

The vibe this game evokes in me is one I rarely feel these days. It reminds me of gaming when i was a kid (im 40). No guide. Just pure curiosity and the sense of discovery. Progress is slow and exciting. Finding new tools feels like a metroidvania. New paths open in old areas you thought were done. Exploration is time consuming and rewarding. I often found myself going through areas that appear to be dead ends only to discover something I hadnt noticed before and open a whole new branch of the dungeon. I did get stumped. I did get lost. And so far persistence is well rewarded. Gameplay is simple and satisfying. I played 4 hours straight in my first sitting (i also finished the demo) and I was having a great time being absolutely lost. At first I thought the simplicity would become an issue but so far Ive noticed it helps focus the player on what matters. The exploration. I wouldnt recommend the game to just anyone. The graphics can be a turn off. The lack of hand holding is time consuming. Playing solo is lonely yet atmospheric. The difficulty comes from knowledge of the dungeon and tools rather than gameplay. If FEELS like a exploring a dungeon and not everyone is into that. But for those who are, it really scratches that itch. Last note, Ive encountered no bugs. Others have some pretty bad experience breaking bugs so I hope the devs patch that soon.
