Dec. 2025
DEFCON is a nearly perfect game for me. It has extremely simple mechanics from which strategic complexity can emerge. It has an aesthetic and atmosphere which synergize and augment its core gameplay, in which you make decisions eradicating millions of lives while witnessing only an '80s themed abstraction of the devastation unfolding, with dramatic sounds of radar and choking death played in the background. As a real-time strategy game, it works. As an artistic experience, it works. It is wholly unique and will probably never be surpassed. I have one complaint that sticks in my mind that I need to get off my chest: SPHERICAL PLANET, FLAT MAP. Supposedly there's a VR version that puts the map on a globe? But I never tried it. But missiles travel along a Mercator projection which turns our spherical world into a cylinder, taking ridiculous trajectories to reach their destinations. Normally, this would not bother me, BUT, FOR PURELY AESTHETIC REASONS, THE MISSILES ALL TRAVEL IN ARCS ACROSS THE SCREEN, ALWAYS ARCING NORTHWARD. Look at the pictures to see what I mean. The missiles do not travel in straight lines, nor do they follow geodesics--they all arc northward to give the player the aesthetic vibe of a parabolic trajectory. I HATE THIS DESIGN DECISION SO MUCH. WHY DO THEY ALL CURVE NORTH. THIS HAS (very minor) GAMEPLAY IMPLICATIONS, BECAUSE MISSILES TARGETING YOUR SITES ARE LIKELY TO COME FROM THE NORTH BECAUSE OF THE BIZARRO TRAJECTORIES THEY TAKE. IT MAKES NO PHYSICAL SENSE, THEY SHOULD AT LEAST ARC SOUTHWARD IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE NOT BECAUSE IT WOULD BE REALISTIC, BUT AT LEAST THERE'D BE SOME DISCERNIBLE LOGIC OTHER THAN "NORTH=UP INTO SKY." Ahem. Be grateful every day you are not cursed with fixations like mine. Great game, absolutely still worth a buy, devs pls fix the trajectories or add in a globe option with geodesics ok thank you bye

You don't win, you just try to make sure they don't either. Play with the sound so you can have the appropriate amount of dread and despair.

Horrifying in ways I can't even fully describe. The simplicity of the game-play only adds to the dread. A master-class in sound design. 10/10

Play this game if you want to be emotionally wrecked by the sheer pointlessness and senseless nature of nuclear war.
