First off: Delver is an Immersive Sim with some roguelite elements, not an action RPG and it shouldn't be judge as one This might be one of the best Indie Immersive Sim i've played, and I say that as someone who played through most of Cruelty Squad (I'd even say it rivals Cruelty Squad, although that game is an Acid Trip Deus Ex That Hates You and this is a roguelite version of Ultima Underground with the gameplay depth of a more "modern" ImSim Yes, the combat is going to feel bad and clunky if you just hit things until they die, but that super isn't how this game is meant to be played and it's by far the least interesting way to play it Just one thing I haven't seen mentioned: Tankards are a great weapon if thrown, but be careful when using a tankard (or any other random object, but tankards thrown at full force deals a lot of damage) as a projectile weapon because the gameplay systems are very well-connected and if it bounces off a wall it can hit you in the face. also a lot of other shit you do can kill you but ppl already mentioned the staff and the rest is either obvious stuff or things I just haven't discovered yet, I rediscovered this game like a couple days ago Anyway, again, if you're looking for a straightfoward action-rpg, you're not gonna like this very much. BUT, if you want a randomized dungeon crawler with some of the best, most chaotic and detailed systemic game design and emergent gameplay I've ever experienced, you should absolutely play this TL;DR: Delver is a rly good immersive sim with roguelite elements, but boring and needlessly difficult if played like it's a hack and slash, so don't approach it as such

It's a rogue-like which is simple and addictive and has come an extremely long way since its initial release. It's very easy to pick up, with simple game mechanics, but the execution of how weapons and death work mean it never gets repetitive. You can decide to be a wizard on one run, and then a mace wielder the next. Same with enemies: Different enemies do different things. And now- this is new since last I've played- they've added a leveling system, shops that occur during your delve, and permanent expansions on your backpack. None of these were there last time I played. There's a reason I keep revisiting this every year or so.

A lovely little dungeon crawler with a surprisingly competent level editor and mod support. They manage to keep the dungeons feeling handmade and thoughtfully designed while also retaining a healthy amount of randomness, which is pretty rare for a 3D rogue-like. The art style is cute and crispy and there's plenty of post-processing effects to choose from to alter the vibe of the game to your liking. My only gripe is that the looping music does get a little fatiguing. I wish there were more silent moments to highlight the ambient sound in the levels, but I guess you can always just turn the music down or off. If you're looking for a first person rogue-like that isn't a shooter, Delver's probably the game for you - there's not many better than this one. If you're looking for something a bit more complex and punishing then you could try out Barony.

I often look back at this dungeon crawler and wonder what more it could've been before it was abandoned. The mods are great though.

This review is after 1 run that lasted about an hour and a half. Controls - 8/10 (Very well done, but needs a dodge or run button) Design - 10/10 (Amazing Cartoony retro artstyle) Story - 4/10 (Not much in the way of backstory, or it's just not explained well) Looting Mechanics - 10/10 (Random item/armor/weapon drops, be sure to manage your invo! Weapons Break!!!) Combat - 8/10 (Sometimes hard to tell attack distance for both you and the enemies) Fun! - 10/10 (All in all, this was a really fun game. I love a good looter~)
