This game is so well-made, I’m so glad I played it. Departed Away is a psychological horror experience that leans into the classic surreality of the genre. It follows the story of a protagonist and their stalker, though the deeper you delve into the game, the more the plot unravels—and the less it makes sense… in the best way possible. Right from the start, the atmosphere is top-notch—reminiscent of Doki Doki Literature Club (DDLC), from which the game clearly draws inspiration. Everything feels too cheerful, too bright. The characters are just off enough to be unsettling—uncanny and nearly human, but never quite right, and throughout the game, subtle hints embedded in the soundtrack and background reveal pieces of the truth behind the bizarre events affecting the protagonist. I appreciate how, even with a clearly structured narrative, the developers manage to incorporate these background details to add an extra layer of depth to the experience. The story itself is quite impressive, as it leaves room for interpretation while providing enough substance that you’re never entirely lost. The artistic direction is particularly strong, especially in how it conveys the main character’s dissociation. Players are given just enough information to piece things together, but never with full certainty. In addition to this, the game’s depiction of mental illness is handled with care. While I won’t speak on its clinical accuracy, as I’m far from an expert, it doesn’t feel careless or exploitative. It’s clear the developers intended to tell a meaningful story about the tragedy of living with psychological trauma—and they absolutely succeeded. I felt connected to the experience from the moment the cheerful facade began to crumble. Furthermore, the characters you interact with are cool! You can choose to engage with four different girls, again echoing DDLC. Each path is unique, yet they all end the same: in failure. Something always goes wrong, and the protagonist’s hopes are crushed by the antagonist, Lora. And despite the characters representing familiar archetypes, they’re thoughtfully written. Marcel, in particular, stands out as the most unique. Her character feels especially well-developed, and her personality breaks away from typical tropes. However, the characters aren’t necessarily the focus—instead, they represent different kinds of relationships. To me, they show that the protagonist is capable of forming bonds with almost anyone, but something—inevitably—destroys them. That perspective made me appreciate their presence even more. Moving on to Lora herself, she is definitely an especially intriguing character. She embodies the split personality created by the protagonist—an expression of their suppressed anger and rage. From my interpretation, she represents the violent and unprocessed trauma that manifests during dissociation. The protagonist refers to her as a separate entity, despite her not existing, which strengthens the idea that she is a psychological construct. Her exaggerated, almost theatrical personality is designed to scream “I’m not real”—and yet, we’re left uncertain until the truth is revealed. She’s a powerful symbol of internalized trauma, given a face and name to illustrate the dissonance and delusion that deep trauma can inflict. Really powerful stuff. The pixel-art style is also worth praising. I’ve always appreciated pixel art, and it’s especially difficult to make something truly eerie using static visuals—but this game manages to pull it off. Its nostalgic aesthetic feels like a throwback to the Nintendo DS, yet it unsettles me through clever design choices. Jittering sprites, uneven clipping, mosaic filters, and blocky glitch effects amplify the horror elements and elevate the visual storytelling. What could’ve looked quite ridiculous and... goofy, ends up feeling genuinely disturbing. One of the most effective techniques used in this game is how it handles its more shocking scenes. Much of it is left intentionally ambiguous, but the sharp transition from a haunting figure to the sound of bones crunching—or a dog yelping—is absolutely brutal. It delivers a gut punch, narrowing the player’s focus to sound alone. This choice removes any visual “flair” from the violence, instead presenting horror in its rawest, most visceral form. It makes perfect sense that such imagery would be repressed by the protagonist and instead projected through Lora. This narrative decision avoids cheap shock value in favor of psychological weight, and actually makes sense in terms of the narrative. It forces the developers to be more creative, and the result is all the more impactful. Overall, Departed Away is a powerful indie title that delivers on both its horror elements and its nuanced portrayal of trauma through interactive storytelling. A perfect 10/10. I had a phenomenal experience with it.

The game was good, but it felt a little unfinished, which is understandable. Many things were left unexplained, and many mysteries remained unsolved.

it's a solid 5.5/10 but you will have fun i don't really play visual novels to be honest but this one took my interest somehow. background secrets, characters and their developments were fun to engage with. it needs some more foreshadowing on the upcoming events. minigames were fun but them not having any actual effect was a downer. i don't know why we can't progress with the characters as we please or at least plan our playstyle around the neccesary events like going to classes and home etc. dialogues were very restrictive and not clear. it could've been so much better.
