Great game, some caveats that don't totally drag it down. It very obviously takes its design cues from classic ADV visual novels like Yuji Horii Mysteries / Famicom Detective Club and adds its own charming character sprite work and beautiful pre-rendered 3D backgrounds. The story was compelling with some well-executed twists and the cast of characters were all endearing, with a certain pair of golf lovers really standing out among them. Much like the games that inspired it, Detective Instinct plays out more like a mystery visual novel that lets you pick which topic to discuss in what order than a detective game that allows for the player to form their own deductions and proceed with them. Deductions and resolutions largely happen automatically and without the player's input by the main character or the main character's sidekick and are really just told to you when the time comes. The puzzle solving mostly boils down to selecting the correct menu options during breaks in a conversation and a quiz at the end of each chapter that recaps the day's events. In fact, in terms of true puzzles there's really only one, in which you have to figure out the code to a combination lock. As far as I know there isn't a punishment for answering questions wrong aside from potentially missing out on two achievements during the game's climax and there aren't any fail states that lead to a game over. I wish I had expected all this before starting so that I could have been impressed by the reactivity present in a visual novel, rather than be a little disappointed by the lack of agency in a detective game. The game is also shorter than the base price would suggest. I rolled credits in 5 hours with 13 out of 15 achievements earned and I estimate that going back for the last 2 achievements would add another 30 minutes. $20 without the introductory discount must seem pretty steep for such a short experience but by the end of it I felt like I got my moneys worth for a game that I'd been looking forward to for over a year. Despite those pain points I'd still consider Detective Instinct to be a worthy purchase for any fan of mysteries and I hope Farewell, My Beloved becomes the first in a new series of modern ADVs just like it.

It's better to treat this as a VN rather than a detective game, because the puzzles are extremely easy - but the atmosphere and the love poured into this game are top-notch. They had a vision of what they wanted to go for and they went for it, as hard as they can. The moment the train's steam in the FMV smudged like the old DS movie codec I was instantly sold.

Its GOOD! But it's a FAMICOM DETECTIVE CLUB Inspired Game. Not an Ace Attorney one. I get the feeling many reviewers never played a FDC game and only know AA. One short mystery, a small cast, figuring out what to do within the confines of the interface's mechanics or what topic to revisit when, rather than a present system. (Though they did add ONE AA inspired confrontation) Ace Attorney evolved from FDC, but this is clearly in the vein of the original FDC style or the Yuji Hori Mysteries Portopia (OG, not the AI Slop), Hokkaido and Karuizawa. We have seen a sort of revival of the FDC tradition now, with remakes of the originals, tributes like this and Retro Mystery Club, and The Remake of Hokkaido Serial Murder Case. (The creator of this game stated he loves Hori's mystery games. Fun fact: same dude also created and wrote Crono Trigger and Dragon Quest) They differ from AA in that not only are Trial segments absent, the game is less interested in allowing you to present evidence for contradictions, but rather come up with which of the actions available unlocks the next bit of story. AA is more novel and complex in this regard, even if they are both very simple interms of the actual detective work they allow, and are mostly Glorified Visual Novels. Its also reminiscent of something like Cing's detective VNs Hotel Dusk, Last Window and Another Code, but far more firmly in the FDC corner in its gameplay and interface. The visuals seem to be more like AA and those other games Sidebar: If you are interested in detective game design that actually demands detective work from you, check out Paradise Killer, Return of the Obra Dinn, Signal and Echo and The Colonel's Bequeast. If you like the VN vibes of a more guided detective story with a charming take on the retro limitations of a style of game that originated the detective genere in gaming and did so within the confines of a Famicom/NES, this is cool evolved version of it, it has cool characters and so far an engaging story. The presentation takes advantage of modern niceties without feeling too out of touch with the retro vibes (Retro Detective Club aims to look like a Famicom game even, this one aims for something just a tad more complex) If you do enjoy the type of game that descends from this tradition, like Ace Attorney, Danganrompa or Master Detective Archives Raincode, you will probably have a lot to love here. And maybe go check out the actual Famicom Detective Club Games. Nintendo has remade them both for Switch and even created a brand new horro themed entry written by the creator of Metroid :)

Wonderful game, full of charm and whimsy. I'm not even done, but I already love it. God, it takes me back to my first time playing Ace Attorney. If you're a fan of those games, or any kind of mystery type game, give this a try. Seriously, it's so good.

Works great on deck. Gives some really cool old school anime vibes, reminds me a lot of monster, and also Phoenix Wright.
