A almost carbon copy of Ace Attorney at first, with very similar character dynamics and structure. While the start isn't that engaging, just stick with it because the end half are really good, with some plot developments I really didn't see coming (but are actually quite cleverly hinted at throughout the game). I usually hate the "it get's better, just stick with it" argument, because it's a bit insulting to your time as a player. It's why I had so many issues with the pacing in The Great Ace Attorney Chonicles and still to this day think it's almost twice as long as it should have been. But thankfully this is not as overwritten as the later AA games, the cases still move at a fairly quick pace, much more similar to the first AA. The graphics looks good and there are a lot of great characters but there is one thing that drag this game down and depending on your tolerance, it might even be a question of if you should take this as a recommendation or not. The translation is borderline abysmal. I have no idea if the devs just used Google translate (they don't appear to have any English speakers on staff) or if the people they hired did and hoped nobody would care or notice. A little jank translation are quite common in indie visual novels, especially the ones from Asia and it's not that much of an issue most of the time. But this time it's rough to say the least. Making some of the deductions feel very convoluted, probably more so than they where intended to be. It's not all bad, but often enough that you get pulled out of the story when you have to think what was actually meant to be said. There are also line breaks in the middle of words and random symbols added here and there in the middle of a word, but that's a minor gripe. If you like AA style games and can deal with a extremely rough translation (or find a fan translation) this is a clear recommendation. For anyone else there are better games in this style.

I tried with this game, and I could tell the devs also tried and came up with lots of interesting mechanics. But oh my bob does their localization stink. I don’t even know if they localized it, so much of this game reads like straight translating word for word. Murders on the Yangtze had some issues like this but it was quirky because it was relatively infrequent, didn’t interfere with understanding the plot, and you could intuit what the translation should’ve been or why it sounds strange. This is a problem in Trials of Innocence for almost the entire game and it’s not cute at all. So many times I’m just moving past weird things that people have said. I was unable to finish this game, and that says a lot. I will play and enjoy the trashiest attorney game and I couldn’t with this one. I held out some hope they’d start chipping away at this with patches but apparently they’re broke and this game was 30,000 units away from their BREAK EVEN point. So no localization improvements appear to be forthcoming. If bad localization isn’t a deal breaker for you, the gameplay is great and I can definitely recommend this, so on that basis and because I feel bad for these broke devs, thumbs up.

What a special game. It's crazy to me that this game slipped under everyone's radar. It gives a bad first impression due to the amateurish localization and meh tutorial cases, but trust me, this is a fantastic Ace Attorney game. It truly reminds me of the original AA trilogy, and restored in me the excitement I had for the series which faded in 3DS games of the AA series. It's truly a shame that it seems like it sold badly. The plot, music, characters, are all fantastic. There's no excessive padding or filler. Yes, the localization is riddled with errors and awkward English, but the charming writing and humor still shines through if you let it. This is the most authentic Ace Attorney clone that exists. You'd have to be an avid fan of the AA series to appreciate the insane lengths to which the devs did their homework here. It takes serious, serious effort to make a game that understands and imitates the quality behind the AA series this well. The prosecutors all feel unique, strategic and engaging. The quips and banter are all there. And it has Silas, which is one of my favorite prosecutors so far - what a fun gimmick and banger BGM. This level of quality just doesn't happen often with indie games. There's one more AA-type game that can punch in the same weight class - Tyrion Cuthbert - but that game is more of a spin on the formula, while Trials of Innocence plays it straight. There's plenty of room for both. Also, worth saying, Trials of Innocense is significantly beefier - it took me twice as long to beat as Tyrion, and definitely not due to any padding.

I just finished this game and absolutely loved it. The cases were really interesting to read and solve, and I was impressed how all individual mysteries eventually connected to a larger story. I haven't played any of the Ace Attorney games, so I can't draw comparisons, but on its own merits this game is masterpiece. If you enjoy detective games you need to give it a try. I'll be waiting for whatever comes next, whether that's DLC or a sequel.

If you like Ace Attorney then there is no reason you will not like Trials of Innocence. That's the short version of my review. The somewhat longer version is that this game shares many gameplay elements with that series. You investigate crime scenes, you use your deductive skills to carefully read witness statements and then point out contradictions between them and the evidence, which progresses the story. Trials of Innocence is a perfect example of a game that grows on you. The script's translation from Chinese to English is a little stiff or awkward at points, and there's plenty of typos, but you get used to it quickly. It takes its sweet time letting the story hooks sink in, but when they do, they're in deep. The characters in this game are wonderful, the narrative is well crafted and emotionally rich, the art is lovely and the music is banging. Despite its few flaws, when viewing Trials of Innocence as a whole, I can only feel that it is worthy of its inspirations, and even ranks above some Ace Attorney games in my book. Fingers crossed for a sequel. Finally, the price. As of writing this review, the game is $17 USD. Do I think it's worth that price? Oh, yes. Very much so. Wait for a sale if you must, but I think even at full price, you're more than getting your money's worth here.
