Yes, it is an Ace Attorney clone - but it is EXCELLENT. The music is great. The characters, though similarly zany to that of AA, tone the craziness down a bit and are all pretty well-rounded and interesting. While the concept is ripped straight from AA (and even the artwork style copies it closely), it's done quite well and they even Improved upon the Cross-Examination mechanic, which I am extremely grateful to the game devs for. The cases and overall plotline are also quite well done, featuring a complicated moral dilemma that gets alluded to throughout the game. It's not perfect. There are some glitches here and there, the English translation can be a bit funny at times (though I never had issues understanding), the spacing of words and other things were also sometimes off (due to the difference in chinese vs english characters). Overall I highly recommend this game, especially to any fan of the AA series!

What a special game. It's crazy to me that this game slipped under everyone's radar. It gives a bad first impression due to the amateurish localization and meh tutorial cases, but trust me, this is a fantastic Ace Attorney game. It truly reminds me of the original AA trilogy, and restored in me the excitement I had for the series which faded in 3DS games of the AA series. It's truly a shame that it seems like it sold badly. The plot, music, characters, are all fantastic. There's no excessive padding or filler. Yes, the localization is riddled with errors and awkward English, but the charming writing and humor still shines through if you let it. This is the most authentic Ace Attorney clone that exists. You'd have to be an avid fan of the AA series to appreciate the insane lengths to which the devs did their homework here. It takes serious, serious effort to make a game that understands and imitates the quality behind the AA series this well. The prosecutors all feel unique, strategic and engaging. The quips and banter are all there. And it has Silas, which is one of my favorite prosecutors so far - what a fun gimmick and banger BGM. This level of quality just doesn't happen often with indie games. There's one more AA-type game that can punch in the same weight class - Tyrion Cuthbert - but that game is more of a spin on the formula, while Trials of Innocence plays it straight. There's plenty of room for both. Also, worth saying, Trials of Innocense is significantly beefier - it took me twice as long to beat as Tyrion, and definitely not due to any padding.

If you like Ace Attorney then there is no reason you will not like Trials of Innocence. That's the short version of my review. The somewhat longer version is that this game shares many gameplay elements with that series. You investigate crime scenes, you use your deductive skills to carefully read witness statements and then point out contradictions between them and the evidence, which progresses the story. Trials of Innocence is a perfect example of a game that grows on you. The script's translation from Chinese to English is a little stiff or awkward at points, and there's plenty of typos, but you get used to it quickly. It takes its sweet time letting the story hooks sink in, but when they do, they're in deep. The characters in this game are wonderful, the narrative is well crafted and emotionally rich, the art is lovely and the music is banging. Despite its few flaws, when viewing Trials of Innocence as a whole, I can only feel that it is worthy of its inspirations, and even ranks above some Ace Attorney games in my book. Fingers crossed for a sequel. Finally, the price. As of writing this review, the game is $17 USD. Do I think it's worth that price? Oh, yes. Very much so. Wait for a sale if you must, but I think even at full price, you're more than getting your money's worth here.

When a game reaches the credit roll and leaves you with an desire for more, you know its a great game. I absolutely adore the story. Every case is connected in some shape or form, and sometimes you visit the locales of previous cases again. It tells a really complex story and allows many side characters to breathe. Oftentimes do I feel for the defendant or the perpetrator and it actually goes to a rather philosophical place, with no right or wrong answer. The final choice actually made me stop and think. Only flaw really is the English translation. But then again the translation never really confused me in the court. It’s just a bit rough. If you like the ace attorney series, I whole-heartedly recommend you giving this one a try. Just be aware that Case 1 isn’t a shining example of the grand story yet to unfold.

I finished the main story and really enjoyed my time with it, but I need to give a few caveats. First, if you choose to play this game in English you should do so with an open understanding that the text has not been properly localized. There are a lot of typos and grammatical errors, and in cases 4 and 5 I observed multiple instances where there was untranslated Chinese text. The latter is a non-issue for certain story beats, but it also happened for "important" story information (i.e. dialogue with red highlighted text) and during emotional narrative moments, which is a shame because it's quite a distraction from the intriguing mystery. It's going to be difficult to pitch this game in it's current state to western Ace Attorney/murder mystery fans as a result. I had a friend who helped me translate the text in these instances, but it is a lot of effort most players wouldn't bother with when expecting certain standards for a text-based mystery puzzle game. I highly encourage the dev team to focus on at least machine translating all remaining lines from case 5 since it is the final case, if that's the method they are using, until they have the resources to translate and localize the game with a paid human editor. Second, unlike Murders on the Yangzte River or Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane which were inspired by Ace Attorney but put their own spin on the genre, Trials of Innocence heavily leans in to the Ace Attorney homage. It's clearly a labor of love by fans of the Ace Attorney series, and I personally think of the indie games I have played this is the closest likeness to the AA-franchise. Underneath all the translation issues there is clearly the same humor, witty dialogue, and likeable cast members. The art has also had an insane amount of work put into it just seeing the number of assets coming out case after case. In terms of the writing the mystery was larger and more complex than I was expecting. There are a quite a few parties involved by the end of the game, and there's a sequel hook on top of that. Puzzles aren't too difficult and the few occasions where I was stumped were due in part to wording or linguistic error. I know some people would mark that as a negative, but personally I don't think gameplay is an especially important category for visual novels which are this text heavy. The most important thing is always the story, and this one is very good. I just really wish the English translation was improved so that I could recommend it whole-heartedly to my friends who I know would otherwise enjoy it. I hope the game sells well so that the studio can acquire more resources to improve it as many of the reviews have asked for, and I was greatly saddened to learn that the lead writer for this game also passed away. I would love to play a sequel if this team is able to make one (hopefully to finish Charlie's story, seriously what is the deal with his dad!? ), especially since if they can produce an initial game of this quality they can probably improve other entries in the future.
