TLDR: Excellent. For a long-time roguelite player it's quite easy, but worth the play. This game took me a second to get into. I felt like I was infinitely strong and so there was no reason to try new builds, until I started the ascension-difficulty climb. Reaching the top was quick, but it revealed a lot of the payoffs/reasons someone might go an alternate build. The highest difficulty is where I think the game really began for me. That's the first ascension that made me *unable* to win unless I played with strategic intention. I love the design of this game, and enjoyed it thoroughly, but was bummed at where the ascensions ended and would LOVE to get more difficulties added. Some low-hanging fruit for that: - adding a third wave of enemies for elite fights - adding faulty to starting dice - adding pointy to a starting dice - lowering starting max health - lowering gained HP from resting and/or beating bosses - faster price inflation at shops and other sites - increasing the chance for combat at ? sites - increasing regular/elite enemy HP stats specifically I want to reiterate how much I enjoyed this game, and that even despite finding it a little too easy will likely continue to play it for a while. To the devs: great job. Edit: I read the roadmap and see that my hopes are on the TODO list, along with some QOL things I'm looking forward to. If devs follow through on that they're GOATED

Very cool blend of Slay-the-Spire-alike but with die that offers some great novelty and solid die-pool building roguelite with one big caveat for genre veterans. Highlights? Die Placement By themselves the die are very much like cards, except their value varies instead of being constant. However the real gameplay innovation relative to deck-building card roguelites is how you arrange these die onto your board, since die interact with each other and with effects that enemies apply to your board. This is sometimes simple, especially at the beginning. You might simply place a ‘Boost Die’ so that it adds +value to an Attack Die and a Defence Die. Later, depending on how you build, each turn can become a little puzzle. You might want to use a mirror die to repeat the effects of two other die placed x spaces away, and also boost those die, and also have those die adjacent to each other to benefit from adjacency bonus, and also cover up a poison spot on your board that will expand to other spots if you do not, and maybe fill up a row of places that will reduce the incoming attack from an enemy, and on and on and on. Die Upgrading Whilst the number of die types is far fewer than cards in other similar games, what you can do with those die is far greater. Die can have their die-face values increased, but also gain properties like rerolls, additional draw, reduced energy cost, poison, thorns and more. Given you do not change your die often, being able to improve them in many ways works well. Meta Progression Not great, but good. You do not get any choices, there is no “currency” you can use to unlock things of your choosing, but you do gain new characters (up to 3), new character special abilities and new relics and many of these are potentially run-changing. There is also a challenge-escalator, albeit the top end of this (D6) is still far, far easier than Slay the Spire Ascension 20, and many other examples. Caveats? Build Meta Hopefully, this will change. At present, March 2025, Die in the Dungeon has a major issue in that each of the three characters can very often create a single ‘build’ that is very reliably effective. It is roughly like this # Keep total die around 6-7 in order to reliably draw all or most die each turn (easily done) # 2+ defence die, 1 terrain die, 1 boost die, 0-1 attack die, 1 health regain die, 1 mirror die You *can* do different things, but you do not *need* to. Whereas in Slay the Spire, for example, each character had several viable deck builds on max-Ascension, and you *had* to learn them, and use them, to be viable. Enemy and Boss Variety Currently (March 2025) this is rather low. Many corridor battles are against the same enemies, so you might fight against the same enemies a dozen times within a run. This makes battles feel a bit grindy. Same die, same enemy, same approach.

Finished D6 in under 30 hours. To be fair, I had a lot of fun, but I also lost interest now that I'm "done". It feels like the optimal strategy is to ignore a lot of dice options, and just go for mirror + boost + pack, which makes it almost repetitive once you get going. There's also some glaring loopholes, like making infinite money with coin dice. You pick Mango, leave one enemy alive, take a gravity coin die, and see the money roll in. Buy all the upgrades, get all the relics. I'm excited to see if there's gonna be some serious balancing, because then I will definitely play some more.

I have never before taken the time to write a review for a steam game. Die in the dungeon serves as a testament to the ability of indie developers to make meaningful contributions to the roguelike (in this case, deckbuilding) space. If you enjoy roguelikes and want to support the growth of the genre, consider buying this incredibly deep deck builder. Pros- 1. Cost. The early access launch price was very palatable and feels like a bargain, without ripping off the hard work of the developers. 2. Game design. I am generally hesitant to trust dice-based roguelikes, as it takes a genre filled with rng and usually introduces too much. Through a series of very inventive design decisions and balancing levers, that does not feel like the case here. 3. You are given dramatic freedom in how you choose to build out your deck and what areas you wish to prioritze. 4. Incredibly inventive enemy and boss designs. Many enemies introduce mini games and rules to play around. These ensure that different combats and combinations of enemies lead to having to find creative solutions. 5. I really enjoy the art and animation, kudos to the people behind that :) Cons- I’d like to start off by acknowledging this is a first early access patch and many things presumably will change. I also don’t consider any of these cons to be particularly meaningful, just weed for improvement. 1. Elite battles. I would like to see mini boss style elite fights as opposed to just two waves of normal enemies. It feels a little underwhelming pathing for elites only to see the same enemies we see in other fights. 2. Late game hand vomit. I find that the complexity of decisions are at their highest in the early/mid game, where as the last biome has felt like either my deck is strong and I can hand vomit mindlessly, or I don’t have the ability to generate the necessary numbers. 3. I play on steam deck only, so it’s possible this is different on desktop, but late game, when you have 15+ relics, the clarity around where dice values come from feels to be lacking in the UI. I feel as if being able to in the moment know what is making my dice strong would allow me to try and make more strategic decisions. Conclusions- this game is already a triumph and would be more than worth the price with no further patches. Get it and have fun

If Slay the Spire used dice instead, had frogs, and was inspired by Dicey Dungeons, you'd get Die in the Dungeon. Its a vibrant, lovely roguelite with a fresh take on "cardbuilders", while providing a challenge despite its "cutesy" appearance. I thoroughly enjoyed the demo, and the current release does not disappoint. At its price point for an early access game, the amount of content and effort put in is worth the price, and I am looking forward to future updates. PROS: +Frogs +Colorful and vibrant cast, world and overall the pixel art and music are amazing +Dice builder combat that's addicting and easy to pick up +Various builds, combat options and setups so that every run and scenario varies + You can save and exit a run CONS: -Could use a few more quality of life stat records for those who like seeing statistics -Currently no controller support (will be supported later on) -At its current state, lacking a few options such as endless mode etc (will be added in future releases)
