VotV is a deck-builder, roguelike with very minor meta-progression. Unsurprisingly, the game is best compared to StS, though there are numerous differences which set it apart from both StS, as well as from the legion of StS-copycats. As such, VotV’s gameplay is perhaps best described by enumerating the differences from StS (presuming you are familiar with StS; if you aren’t, go play StS and come back.) * Generally speaking, your deck is always comprised of exactly 20 cards. Cards acquired throughout the run are stored and may be swapped in, prior to battle. * Default hand size is 5 and default energy gain is 2. However, you may retain cards in your hand from turn to turn (ala the StS Pyramid) and you keep your excess energy (ala the StS Ice Cream Cone). * You may “purge” a card to gain an energy. Energy is capped at 5, though this upper bound may be temporarily increased (called “Overcharge”). While in Overcharge you gain 1 extra energy per turn. * The run takes place over two areas, in which you will traverse a hex-based path (as opposed to the branching node system in StS). You may progress freely on the path, but once you have access to a direction and decide not to go in that direction, then that hex (and possibly other connected hexes) will become inaccessible. After these two areas, you choose two (out of four) mini-bosses to fight before fighting the Void itself. After beating the Void, the run is over. * Each hex gives a reward (with the usual smattering of standard fights, elites, shops, events), with standard fights yielding a fixed card (no option). However, you know which card each hex will produce, allowing for a more careful construction of your deck. * In addition to each card being upgradable, each card may also hold one of six runes, which are slowly acquired throughout the run. Each rune provides a small, but meaningful, boon within the game’s mechanics. In terms of replayability, there are four characters, each with their own unique decks, relics, and mechanics. The within-character mechanic variations are deep and well connected. Each character also has three subclasses, dictating starter-cards and starting spell. The hardcoded Ascensions in StS are replaced with a custom scaling system, wherein you strategically select the weighted obstacles you will face. (At the time of this review, I am +41 with the Monk character). Pros: +++ The characters are extremely diverse, both in comparison with one another as well as within themselves. That is, each toon has multiple unique features/mechanics that you will need to build around (or ignore) on a given run, pending your card and relic offerings. +++ The deck-building comes off very nicely (card upgrades, runes, the ability to swap cards in and out for each unique battle). +++ The card/energy system (retaining cards, purging for energy) works very smoothly and creates interesting decisions. ++ Good UI. ++ Very reasonably priced on sale. ++ The relic pool is varied and deep. ++ The fights are well-balanced ++ Custom difficulty scaling system works well for this game. Cons: -- Prior to each run, you may select one of 10 fixed cards to start your run with. However, you may not select the same card two runs in a row. This restriction feels arbitrary, and mostly causes me just to quit every other game. There’s more than enough randomness in each run, no need to add seemingly arbitrary restrictions. -- “Buffs” (i.e. Powers in StS) exist but are hard to come by. These are powerful effects, often worth building your whole deck around, so on runs where Buff-offerings are absent or scarce you may be in trouble. - The breadth of VotV may be overwhelming at first (a valid point made by some negative reviews). - Unlock progression for each subclass is much slower than it needs to be. Summary: It took me a while to get into VotV, but I can confidently state that this game is on par with the greats (StS, MT). The mechanical differences between this game and others in this crowded genre are numerous with most all of these differences coming off splendidly. If you like games in this genre, I can strongly recommend VotV, with a small caveat to stick with it, even if the game doesn’t 100% grab you at first. Overall: 9.0/10
Great roguelite deckbuilder. It might be a bit difficult at first to learn all the mechanics, but once you do, it flows so great. All the characters are great and have their own playing styles and the cards have nice synergies. You can compare it to Slay the Spire, and I agree - it is equally as great and has a nice take on this genre. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes these types of games. 10/10
Vault of the Void is maybe the most underrated single-player roguelike deckbuilders out there. I find it criminal that it doesn't often find its way onto best-of-the-genre lists. A true hidden gem. Between the remarkably well-designed character classes that all stand out in their playstyle, the vast number of cards that somehow all feel relevant and well-balanced, and the monumental replayability, this game is a design master class. I understand the art style can be a bit contentious, but don't overlook or underestimate this treasure from that impression alone! Fans of the genre will adore this one. Give it a try.
Vault of the Void is my favorite deck builder of all time, and this is coming from someone who has played a fair bit - Slay the Spire, Monster Train 1 and 2, among some others. The game is extremely deep and complex while offering the player endless possible builds and customization, since you can change your deck around in between every fight. There are a variety of "challenge coins" (50 total) which spice the game up quite a bit, and offer different challenges as well as some goofy, "empowered" runs which are just plain fun. Out of my nearly 200 hours in the game, there's only one thing that I would say is bad/unfun (Bare Bones challenge coin). Highly recommended for anyone a fan of the deckbuilding roguelite genre.
