Not a big fan of timeloops aside from one or two expectations but this pulled me really quickly; It starts off as a silly fun little game but quickly slips into a full on Lynchian film. It’s wonderfully written, packed with clever references to Greek culture and other cultures that I am sure will be apparent with many other playthroughs, Plus the graphics are so incredibly cute.

I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I’m not kidding

I learned about this game through eurothug4000. Her review of the game made it seem like something I didn't want to miss, even though it totally flew under my radar. Now that I've played it, I completely understand the sentiment. DISCOPUP is a short 1-3 hour narrative adventure full of Lynchian Surrealism, Zoomer Humor, and homages to some of my favorite works of media. It's a very abstract experience but, like the work it takes so much inspiration from, there is so much meaning hidden beneath the surface. It is vibes, it is hilarious, it is DISCOPUP.

It’s hard to give Discopup a review, because that feels too cheap for something that feels so wholeheartedly fresh, funny, dark, inventive, and brilliant. This is a game that should—in a just world—have thousands of reviews and hundreds of video essays and podcast episodes covering it. Thankfully, eurothug4000 released a video this week unearthing this gem I would have otherwise missed. I won’t say anything more about the game because you really should play it blind, but if you must know something, know this: the late great David Lynch would be proud. Thank you, Parry Mechanics, for this beautiful game!

Not sure why this funky exploration game has so little attention, but personally I really enjoyed it, if you like mind games with cryptic secrets and sinister narrative, you probably will get a kick out of it. It's very playful overall, kinda has that meta feel to the writing, lots of cosmetics, lots of odd characters and weird places to find. You can finish the game in about 90 minutes but you will have to replay it 4-5 times to get most of the context, it has multiple endings and some of them add a lot to the narrative. It's a timed game in a sense, you can do a limited amount of interactions before the loop ends, but the game will make certain milestones so you won't have to redo everything. The goal of the game is essentially to find the right costume because only dogs can enter the party, but it just so happens you are a seal, and there are multiple ways you can go about it. The game is full of creative puzzles, they are not particularly difficult if you pay attention, but they can be somewhat imaginative and make you think outside the box. The story was actually very interesting, although you will have to complete one of the harder puzzles to get some of the context, there are some dark undertones that are not present for most of the game, so unless you explore all the core endings you may not realize what the game was about, specifically ending C which I would recommend finding. The dialogue kinda has that Undertale vibe to in, the game is trying to be very playful with the interactions, and for the most part I think it worked, aside from occasional one liners that didn't land for me. Pros: (+) The game has a curious form of progression, you are on a limited time loop, but you kinda have to replay the game to get more progress and context. It will make milestones for certain items, so you don't have to replay everything. There are several endings and they were pretty interesting individually, adding various angles to the narrative. (+) Many creative puzzles/interactions that will make you think outside the box or outside the game expectations, the are many cosmetic items that may interact with certain puzzles in strange ways. I liked the design and details for most of the locations, cool music too. (+) I enjoyed the story/writing, it has a bit of that meta game feel, so depends if you into that. It's trying to be playful in a similar way to a game like Undertale. Also nice touch with those disturbing endings and plot twists. (+) Has some silly/creative achievements, with a bit of replay value and a few secrets. (+) Everything about 'Ending C', the music, the cutscene, the conclusion Feedback: - the camera in the alien ship can trigger in a wrong spot and potentially force you into an infinite run loop - it's a bit annoying that you designed the game so we would replay it, but you would not let us skip some of the longer cutscenes, like that black screen after the real mask - I really wish you would also map WASD to arrows so I don't have to play the entire game with my left hand - sometimes it's easy to miss certain dialogue interactions and you might get confused on why the conversation won't end (with the mouse for example) Overall Thoughts: 8/10 There were all kinds of different highlights for this game, many funny moments, some spooky and psychological mind games, creative puzzles, cosmetics hunting, silly achievements and all kinds of optional interactions. It's one of those games where if you like **** around and looking for things, it's pretty fun, seems the dev had a time of his life making it. The story was actually pretty cool, but you only get the important context after one of the harder secrets.
