Oh hey the jokes are actually funny in this one. Nice. Good job. Beyond that, it's the same numbers go up, brain usage goes down as the other two disgaea games I've played (2 and 5). Shame, I'd love it if these were legitimately good tactics games, the customization is through the roof in this series. But they're fun for a playthrough, and this one has the best writing of the three that I've played. Swim on, you crazy sardine.
Ok after 83h of play, in the postgame... I got a crash in the 1st chapter but luckily never after that, it's a pity there are still some possible crashes inside but anyway. Except that for the game itself, the baffling annoyances in the game : all characters you can create are all level 1 characters. Once you can train them in the postgame it's less an issue, but for the whole main game it's really annoying. The workaround is to capture any character you want, thanks to a capture system which is much better than with disgaea2, convenient in the long run, but it makes adding new character some involved process... It makes me think that the devs are not playing their own game here, it's obvious when you play it that there should have been a way to create some new characters with a level > 1. Another annoying part is the very bad inventory for merchants, you don't see all weapons available for example but just a random selection. It can be very annoying because sometimes you want the most expensive items, but sometimes you are looking for the cheapest ones, and it's almost impossible to get the cheapest ones after having selected a few times "more expensive stuff" in the senate. If you can play despite these annoyances and reach the postgame and pass the 1st tedious levels that your characters need to gain at this point, the real fun begins. The amount of things in the postgame is quite amazing. There is a good guide on steam on how to handle the postgame, and even better the google AI has read a lot on disgaea4 and can give some good advices or explain some unclear parts in the steam guide. In the end I recommend it for players who know what they'll get. It's a long game, which is not perfect, but it can be fun, and it's certainly much better than everything which was made after disgaea5. I got it during a sale at 13.99€ only, so I am happy. The network features are a little disappointing for now because so far they all required a high level group in the postgame, but now that I have started the postgame maybe it's going to become better... Too bad the devs have stopped updating the game, it would have been so nice to backport some features from some later disgaea games like simply the merchants inventories!
Pretty decent Disgaea game. I'm not a fan of the geoblocks or spending mana to make characters, but it's got redeeming qualities. Valvatorez is a great protagonist and the cast is a lot more likable than Disgaea 5's, but I don't think that's a high bar. The gameplay and visuals are pretty okay here too and I think it's a worthy alternative to Disgaea 5 if you want to consider story and characters over just simple gameplay.
It is just as good as the first game, maybe even better - except for the few last levels, where the difficulty spikes and all the levels are annoying. The story is awesome till the end, but the ending itself is not as hard-hitting as I would have liked. It definitely has the potential to strike harder at the end like the first and second games. Still, as someone who loves the first game, this one is a real banger.
