The game is very beautiful, calm and heartwarming, but there is also sadness in it. The art is very stunning with a watercolor style. The environment is depicted so beautifully, simple but charming. Then the drama also really left a mark on my heart. It depicts all the characters in it in a gray area. And the best thing is how the characters are introduced not only through visuals, and you can know who is involved in the story.

I've given this a recommend but I'm torn. I wish there was a middle option called "yes but..." The game has its appearance, writing, music and brevity in its favor. Running against it are its particular use of 'interactive elements' and several repeated glitches that occurred towards the latter part of the game. ____Spoilers below between dashed lines____ Dordogne wants you to spend summer with Mimi and seems to want you to inhabit her experience. As its story is laid out linearly and divided into chapters it never has you repeat a particular 'experience' which means you are always moving onto the next interactive moment. The upside is this means you only have to brush Mimi's teeth once or retreive lost cuttlery from a riverbed 2-3 times. The downside of this tasting-platter of experiences is that they felt unpolished and awkward enough that it introduced weariness and mild frustration into scenes where those emotions make no sense. E.g. I'm excited and getting ready for the day, but now I must pilot my two arms through the process of brushing my teeth. Maybe the child's frustration with doing a chore before being allowed to wander is what they sought to convey? For the sake of comparison, what remains of Edith Finch was a game that included interactive elements as you walked through the various character beats of the family's history. In that game's interactive memories, the effect of forcing the viewer to participate served to heighten the horror and dread of a scene and the tasks being 'tense' and 'inevitable' in their eventual conclusion worked in favour of the experience. I remember the fish factory memory even now still with the dismay and dread it evoked when I first played it. In Dordogne, when I finished brushing Mim's teeth, preparing potatoes, making tea, retrieving cutlery etc I just felt relieved that I could move onto the treat of scampering through the world. I enjoyed the photography and scrap-book elements but they felt like an afterthought with a limit of four elements per page and photography opportunities seemed to be doled out only occasionally? I could not tell if I was missing opportunities or if the ones I got were all the avaialable moments. This felt off because I had been given use of the camera and frequently found myself wandering through the environment between tasks and would think "Gosh that's pretty, I wonder if there's a photo option I can access' but the game has pre-selected photo points. When you are in 'photo-mode' the game restrictswhat you can point the camera at, restricting Mimi to a small patch of the horizon it believes should be your focus. This half-way approach to the more creative elements served to highlight my lack of freedom already created by the rigid singular-linear path of the game. The unengaging-friction worked against the character motifs of Nora being so fiercely independant and Mimi craving boundless freedom that were being described throughout their conversations. In spite of all this griping, I cannot deny I enjoyed the writing. I liked Nora, she was a grumpy old person, with regrets and flaws and grief and wisdom and generosity. What a fantastic piece of writing she was, the doling out of information about her relationship with her own son Fabrice and the sketched in warmth of her husband. I think the game creates a fantasic portrait of Nora. When I was floating on the river with Nora or walking its banks, the scenes had the dual quality of Mimi's fear giving way to wonder and the more complicated introspection Nora must have felt as she stretched herself to be emotionally available for Mimi while still clearly nursed the recent grief of Edouard. __________ The game has a fairly delicate hand with all its characters, the complexity pairs well with the layering and transparency you often find in watercolour paintings. TL;DR I think Dordogne is like encountering a favourite dish that has been lovingly prepared in a way that does not suit my personal tastes? I have gone to the restuarant and found that the chef favours a great deal of interactive scenes with the preparation of those elements leading me to want to eat around them and creating a frustration that they have been included in the first place.

playing dordogne feels like being dropped into a watercolor daydream and almost ghibli like. the story is heartfelt yet full of surprises with twists you won't see coming. the gameplay isn't groundbreaking, but it fits the mood slow, gentle, like flipping through a photo album. i did hit a funny little bug with the joystick (A/B buttons acting stubborn), but nothing that broke the vibe. and the soundtrack? pure comfort. this isn't the kind of game you rush. it's one you sit with. and honestly, i don't regret a single minute.

I hesitate to give this a thumbs down, but it really dragged its heels narratively in the first half and had a really abrupt ending. The writing felt a bit predictable, the puzzles were practically non-existent, and the english voice acting was iffy at times, but it was a good experience on the whole. Just not a great choice if you're looking for a sustained experience, but a good game on the whole. I'll give this a thumbs up because I don't want to discourage the devs. I think this had a lot of potential, and I look forward to seeing what they do next. Hopefully with a bit more meat to it, and a bit more polish.
