While it took Nekonyan way too long to release a VN originally released in 2012 in Japan, it was very nice of them to make this 2026 release a custom enhanced engine port of Dracu-Riot! with all the bells and whistles of modern Yuzusoft engines (including the Flowchart system introduced in Senren * Banka). Having said that, I originally read the fan-translation of Dracu-Riot! a decade ago, so I have my thoughts on the story itself, especially compared to other Yuzusoft visual novels. On its own it's a decent enough moege, probably one of the better "beginner-friendly" Yuzusoft titles or moege in general. However, while readable, I think that overall it's not really that special compared to basically every Yuzusoft title released after it. Surprisingly Memorable Vampire Setting Despite the common sentiment that "all Yuzusoft visual novels are the same," I actually disagree. I think every Yuzusoft title does something to help it stand out from the others. In this case, despite Dracu-Riot! being the first Yuzusoft VN to incorporate fantasy elements in an otherwise modern Japan slice-of-life setting, I think the fantasy elements are some of the best incorporated in a Yuzusoft VN. In this case, the island of "Aqua Eden," an artificial island city where gambling and the sex industry are legal, is decently well thought out and explored. In addition to many characters being vampires with unique powers, and of course the whole deal with vampires mostly being active at night, I actually think the VN did a good job exploring how main and side vampire characters suffer from racism from non-vampire human characters without it getting too preachy. As this is a moege, the setting is ultimately just "set dressing" for a romance-focused story, but the decently thought-out world does make Dracu-Riot! at least attempt to stand out compared to the many modern moege that are satisfied with no fantasy gimmicks. 50% "Hit" Characters and Writing As this is a moege, at the end of the day the majority of the reason people read moege is for the heroines and the writing, and I think "hit or miss" really describes Dracu-Riot! in those aspects very well. While I think all 5 heroines are at least likable enough, I think the main two heroines Miu and Elina are by far the most memorable heroines overall. Miu has all the benefits of being the "title heroine" with her getting the most screentime and main story relevance. Even as someone who generally doesn't like tsunderes, she was above average since she had insecurities she wanted to develop as well as some mildly amusing jokes about wanting to be seen as an adult and her "closet pervert" commentary. Elina was easily my personal favorite heroine by a long shot. In addition to her surprisingly fun "tease" humor and openness to commenting on sexual stuff, she had my favorite route as far as exploring her vampire-related powers, backstory, and issues. Far from the best moege route or anything, but definitely the best overall in Dracu-Riot! specifically. Yuuto is a fairly standard main character for Yuzusoft, but I remember him being one of the better ones, being pretty chill and proactive. He also doesn't have the "too nice to everyone" gimmick like Shuuji from Sanoba Witch, the ED gimmick from Riku of Reboot, or being generally lame like Kousei in Cafe Stella's common route. I remember most of the side characters being surprisingly memorable and relevant to the plot(s) of the story. I don't think any individually are as good as, say, Shuuji's Dad from Sanoba Witch, but I think the ensemble is consistently relevant and memorable, which is better than lots of Yuzusoft or even other moege. 50% "Miss" Characters and Writing So the main reason Dracu-Riot! ultimately doesn't stick out as much as later Yuzusoft VNs for me is that while there's a bunch to like about the title, there's also a lot that's very forgettable or outright bad. While I did say I think the heroines are "likable enough," that doesn't mean I cared or even remembered much about them. Azusa, who seems to be the "secondary main heroine," is so forgettable to me I had to re-look at my review from over 10 years ago just to remember what my thoughts on her were. Starts off as closet pervert prude, grows out of it in her route... uhh... she's a loli that wants to be responsible? Rio is one of the most generic "deredere nice girls" I can think of in Yuzusoft. When the main thing I remember about her and her route is "starts off innocent about sexual matters then becomes a pervert like all the others," that's not a great sign. The side heroine is likable but has a gimmick I really don't care for AND the method of how the main character and her get together is stupid, AND the side route is super short and has 0 development or interesting interactions for the side heroine. This was clearly just a "fetish" side route, which is sad considering later Yuzusoft VNs tend to have mostly solid side routes, some better than main routes. Unfortunately, the absolute worst thing about Dracu-Riot! is the mostly miss humor. I did mention above that I liked some of the sexual jokes; Miu's closet pervert stuff can be funny, Elina's pro-sex talk teasing can be amusing, and sexually innocent Rio was funny at times. While they have gotten better over time, Yuzusoft has a tendency to make the heroines kinda hypocritical, calling the MC a huge pervert and treating him as scum of the earth as a "joke" when he maybe makes a comment that at best seems mildly sexual. This doesn't start terribly but gets a bit overdone over time, bringing down the quality of otherwise likable enough heroines as said above. However, the worst character by far is Motoki, a vampire doctor. His gimmick comes down to Japan sometimes liking this super lame trope where they make a "token gay character" keep hitting on the main character as an "ironic" joke, and in Motoki's case he does ACTUAL sexual harassment stuff and gets away with it just because this writer thought "Being Gay is Funny." I'm all for having a gay side character, but for the love of god don't just use them as a repetitively unfunny sexual harassment joke guy, ESPECIALLY when the heroines are already unfairly, unfunnily calling the main character a pervert when he doesn't do anything. Hell, Miu's route got ruined for me; despite having an actually interesting plot, there were SO MANY jokes of Miu being JEALOUS of this obnoxiously annoying "gay sexual harassment" doctor. Conclusion: Readable, But Far From Yuzusoft's Best I have mixed feelings on Dracu-Riot!, but ultimately despite the many issues I have with it, it still does a better job standing out from other gimmickless moege that have an extremely standard modern high school setting. The vampire setting is pretty well integrated compared to other fantasy elements of other Yuzusoft VNs, half the heroines stand out pretty well, some of the drama in common and heroine routes can be pretty interesting, the art is great as always from Yuzusoft, and Nekonyan's updated engine with stuff like Flowchart skip gives it the "modern" Yuzusoft experience that people expect these days. Sadly, at least for me, the humor alone brings Dracu-Riot! down a lot. It's not nearly as good as it could be, relying too much on hit-or-miss (mostly miss) sexual jokes, some even outright ruining heroines or routes for me; a few of the main heroines are some of Yuzusoft's most forgettable ever; and there are so many things in general later Yuzusoft titles just do similarly but outright better executed. You could be one of the people who like the humor more than me, but the humor alone brought the VN from a 7 to something closer to a 6-6.5/10. I mostly give this a "Yes, Thumbs up Recommendation" on Steam because of Dracu-Riot! inspiring later Yuzusoft VNs for a decade, and Nekonyan's updated engine. I ultimately think Dracu-Riot writing-wise is just "OK" at best.
