Dragon Quest 2 has always been one of my favorite RPGs (for some reason), and they've done a really good job with it here. The biggest problem I have with the now completed HD2D trilogy is that all of the games feel the same to play, including DQ 1. I feel like a little piece of the identity has been lost for each game, although I suppose you can just treat the entire trilogy as one experience. These games are much more difficult than the DQ 3 remake, but they still have all of the same quality of life features. Honestly, I felt like this hurt the experience at some points because the new difficulty feels divorced from the logistics and flow of everything else. There is no incentive to fully explore dungeons or the world map, because you can just zip and zoom around for free at any time. This makes some of the more difficult boss fights feel like they come out of nowhere. This game has both ease of play and moderately difficult combat, and I feel like these two points fight each other. Convenience seems to be an expected virtue of RPGs in 2025, but in these games it feels like it was tacked on without any thought of how it would affect the game experience. This especially hurts DQ 1. That being said, the new story and added character personalities are masterfully done, and these games are worth playing. I don't think they replace the originals, but they are great new additions to the DQ canon. It kept me playing for 50 hours, and I barely touched any of the optional content.

I'm still going through DQ1, but it rules. I've seen some complaints about it having too many differences from the original game and ... like ... the original game was a 10 hour playthrough and 90% of that was grinding the same enemies over and over so you could buy the next weapon and stand a chance getting to the next area. I recently replayed the original NES version and I imagine it's nigh-unplayable for anyone without nostalgia for it like I have. Anyway, if you liked the DQ3 remake, you'll like this too.

I played the original NES versions back when they were first released and, yes, I am old. My partner and I played through the DQ1 in probably about 14 hours counting a bit of grinding. Yes, there is grinding in a DQ game.....shocker. I am not understanding why some people are complaining about that particular aspect. In addition, the bosses are brutal on every difficulty mode and actually require you to pay attention to the skills you use and build up your levels instead of facepalming everything like a typical modern RPG. One person rated this "No" because they were playing on Draconian Quest difficulty and it was too hard...yeah, that's the hardest difficulty....surprise. Oh and complained in the same review that they added new things aka "filler" to a 40 year old game. Oh, here comes another surprise, if they didn't it would be a 5 hour game. The additions were fine for the most part, some being well worth it and some not so much. It's almost as if people are missing the "REMAKE" portion of the title...sigh. The game is gorgeous if you like the HD-2D aesthetic, which I do. The score great as usual. If you like DQ pick it up. It's worth it.

My experience with Dragon Quest 1 started in 1988. I was 4 years old and just learning what games were. I had little concept of the strategy behind it, but the music, the sounds, and the feelings are something I've carried with me. I tell you this because the music, the sounds in this game trigger all the nostalgia from that 4 year old boy 37 years ago. The first two hours I have played transported me into a time of blowing into cartridges..... being wired into the console and it just being you, and the story being portrayed. Thank you Square Enix, for letting my toddler experience joy again. CAn't wait for more. Giving me a reprieve to a simpler time is just what I needed.
