This is one of my favorite RPG. I bought the unofficial game on a DVD installer which I lost. When I see this game on Steam as digital copy, I grab it right away. Although, you can only play the game on windowed mode.

Short review after 100% the game: an underrated classic and a must play for any fan of CRPG though beware of crashes and some tweaking as its and old and not optimized game. Pros: - While the enviroments do not go wild in terms of fantasy settings, the low medieval fantasy castles, caves, ruins and forests look absolutely beautiful and immerse you in the game - Great ambient and battle soundtrack - Good variety of fantasy monsters from orcs and ogres to dragons and golems etc... - Average main quests however some of the sidequests take the cake and could be their own main story in some games, like exploring Ardos murder and all the chainquests that link to it, also a lot of sidequests to keep you busy - Great character class, skill and stat choices worthy of an CRPG and with it a lot of possibilites to tackle missions (through combat, sneaking, seducing, bartering and so on a lot of playstyle choices) - Good amount of companions to choose from, sadly not all have their sidestories but a lot of dialogue is voice acted same for main NPCs, not winning any oscars but still good - Great variety of itemization (many weapon, magic, armor and potion types to fit your playstyle) Cons: - Its an older game so on higher end pc and windows you might have problem running (i ran it on windows 10, i had to exit fullscreen always when the game started and in credits else it crashed, after that i could play in fullscreen normally, had to lower graphic settings to medium else it crashed midgame beacuse of memory leak, in mid settings it runs fine, if you have problems check steam guides/forums for solution) - With no real fast travel or mounts a lot of time wasted trying to sell stuff in the big main city and reaching locations traveling on foot - The combat is in real time with a pause function where you can issue commands which is good and works well, you can pause yourself with spacebar or when an enemy spots you for the first time, this is also good, problem is if enemies are not close together and are spread out, the first enemy spots you it pauses, you issue commands and unpause so combat begins, second enemy spots you it pauses... in the end it pauses 5 times or more in rapid succesion which is annoying, this only happens to spread out groups as tight groups spot you at same time All in all a very solid CRPG and a hidden gem in my opinion worthy of a playthrough.

If you like DA:O then this is a great choice. It starts off really slow but the going can get tough, there's also the Dark Eye ttrpg system to be slightly learned. One of the best tips I can give is that the two-handed weapons reign supreme over swords and daggers, every party member should eventually wield them or a bow. The passive willpower skill is also a great investment for every character because it helps you resist wounds, that could turn tide against your party. The plot is not the most original ever written, but it's pleasant enough to keep going. The side quests for the most part are extremely easy, have great rewards and can be funny at times. The graphics are drowning in bloom and are peak late 00's comfiness. If you enjoy real time with pause RPGs and Kinkade painting aesthetics then this game is for you.

Wonderful story and challenging and surprisingly good graphics for an old game. The characters and quests are entertaining and engaging and make you want to keep exploring and developing - lots of good talents and skills. Well worth playing if you enjoy these sort of RPGs.

This game may be old, and the graphics show it, but it's still great. Based on the German pen & paper game "Das schwarze Auge" (The Dark Eye) Drakensang has an established, fleshed out world and is a solid RPG and worth playing, even if you don't know the source material. The game's on sale pretty often and since it's quite cheap to start with, you'll hardly get more bang for your bucks.
