I first played DK2 back in late 1999. I bought the game on a whim. Ended up putting hundreds of hours into it. I've played a number of dungeon manager games since 1999, but none of them have ever come close to Dungeon Keeper 2. Part of what I love about this game is the pacing. Compared to many base management games today, DK2 is fairly slow. You can take your dear, sweet time in most (not all) levels and you will never be over-run. That is a big plus for me. I really love designing the dungeon, training up my minions, expanding my base and then, ultimately, going in for the kill. I feel like a lot of newer games in the genre force you to move quickly and multitask like crazy to survive and while difficultly spikes are certainly fine here and there, when it is level after level that requires that kind of focus, well, it's just not for me. Some people will find this boring, which is understandable. DK2 is the perfect game when I just want to de-stress and have some fun. Now, one word of warning: getting this game to work is not easy on a modern PC. What ultimately worked for me was to do a fresh install of the game and then patch it with Flame v1.7. Ever since I did that, the game has run fine.
Great game, true classic. Though its technical nature seems a bit wonky at times with some effects being FPS-dependent, UI-text dissappearing at high resolutions, some creatures not spawning in some levels, relative low forced resolution etc. Could honestly use the remaster-treatment, but don't think that is likely to happen due to Dungeon Keeper 1 (and KeeperFX in extension) being much more popular in general. I personally prefer this game as I really really really like its art-style and humor. Also own it on GOG and played it there for hours, even before this game got released on Steam, hence the in-dept review with relatively low play-time here.
This is a truly UNIQUE case of an old-school game from 1999, which still feels interesting, fun to play and not really outdated! Speaking of vibes and sense of humor - this game is a pure gem nowadays, when we have either bloody brutal nonsense massacre or pinky-pony marshmallow games - DungeonKeeper gives you a unique experience of playing for evil, with lots of brutal mechanics - but at the same time all this made so cute and funny. Worth to play in 2026!
Probably one of the best RTS games ever created. I could yap for hours about how much this game means to me, so I hope this review doesn't end up being a biblic paragraph. Your first moments in the game would be: "bro, this is old af" it is, it's a game from 1999, also, the game isn't as well known as Age of Empires or Starcraft. If these games are having dinner together on a table, Dungeon Keeper is like the little piece of paper you put under one of the legs to keep the table from moving. Moving on, the first levels in this game are basically the tutorial, don't worry, while progressing through them you will get used to the mechanics, unlike the controls and bindings, which you can re-bind with no problem. The game has interesting features, for example, EVERY creature has a mood system, this can be disturbed by torturing, slapping, overworking and depriving them of their basic needs as well as improve their moods by gambling, feeding them and many other ways to keeping them happy. There's an economic system, you can farm gold and with it you can build your unlocked rooms, pay your creatures (yes, you have to pay them, yes, they get angry and sad when they don't get their salary), pay a large amount of money with your casino and train your creatures. Basically it feels like having a big Sims family but you don't get more benefits from being the "best" keeper, be bad and mean, it's more entertaining >:) . One of the things I dislike about DK2 is that the creature's AI tends to glitch, especially during battles, making them to even die in decisive moments of your playthrough but the end result feels so polished that it's hard to believe it's still running so well today, especially since it's EA who brought it back as publisher. Do I recommend to get the GOG version instead of the steam one? Probably! honestly I pirated this game a lot of times and played it with no problem, I bought it a few years ago in GOG but I only played like 6 levels and that's it. I'm about to finish this steam version soon and it feels great to play, I had a few crashes but I've been having that problem with every version I've played for years, so ig it's something due to how old the game is(? not sure tbh. I'd love to keep writing about this game but I don't want to make this any longer, so, yea, buy it if you want, there's a "fix" guide you could use but I had no need to use it because, as I said earlier, it's hard to believe this is the steam version, especially for an old game. You won't regret for playing as the bad guy here, and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I have for so many years. No, I haven't played the first game (yet) :D
